BITS Pilani student found dead in hostel, institute says he ‘died in sleep': Report
According to The Indian Express, police have begun inquest proceedings and said it appears to be a case of natural death. The incident was reported around 11.30 am, after which a team from Verna police station arrived on campus.
'The student was found lying on his bed in a sideward sleeping position. The previous night, he played table tennis on the campus and later returned to his room. The room was locked from the inside. When he did not answer the door on Saturday, the hostel authorities were informed. The cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem on Sunday,' a police officer was quoted as saying by publication.
In a statement, the institute confirmed that the deceased was a third-year dual degree student of BE Computer Science and MSc Economics, with a CGPA close to 9.
'The BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its students today. He was found in an unresponsive state on his bed when his room was opened at around 11am (on August16), and the medical team confirmed that he had passed away in his sleep. The police were informed and have initiated the required procedures to ascertain the cause of death, and we are fully cooperating,' the institute's public relations officer Arjun Halarnkar was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
'His father called his friends to check about his son's whereabouts, wherein they tried a lot to open the door of his hostel block which was locked from inside. They later checked from the ventilator and found the student lying on the bed,' Halarnkar added.
4th death case in 9 months
This marks the fourth student death reported at the BITS Pilani Goa campus in the past nine months. The previous three cases were suicides.
The campus drew attention in May when the institute initiated an internal inquiry following three suicides reported since December 2024.
The first case involved a 21-year-old second-year BE Computer Science and MSc Chemistry student from Uttar Pradesh, who died by suicide in December 2024. The second incident occurred in March 2025 and concerned a 20-year-old third-year dual degree student. The third case, reported in May 2025, involved a 20-year-old from Lucknow, a second-year dual degree student in MSc Chemistry and BE Electrical and Instrumentation, according to The TOI.
In response, the institute announced a series of measures aimed at easing academic pressure and improving student well-being.
These included overhauling the curriculum, expanding counselling services with professional psychologists, launching a 24×7 helpline, organising sessions with faculty to address student concerns, and introducing weekly psychiatrist consultations.
The authorities also assured that 'students in distress were given flexibility to take examinations at a later time' and said new courses on mental and physical wellness and stress management would be part of the revised curriculum.

After mob kills 21-yr-old, admin, cops work overtime to ensure peace in Jamner
Four days after a 21-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob of 10 to 12 people, Jamner town in Jalgaon district remains tense but peaceful. The police have set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder and arrested eight youths so far. The district administration said sensing the mob's anger, they worked overtime to ensure the situation did not spiral out of control. On August 11, Suleman Rahim Khan Pathan was allegedly paraded and beaten to death by a mob after they found him seated in a cafe in Jamner with a 17-year-old girl from another faith. They allegedly thrashed him in and outside the cafe, took him to his village, Betawad Khurd, some 25 km from Jamner town, and beat him up again, leading to his death. Suleman's maternal uncle Kalim Shaikh said, 'Suleman was beaten up for hours by the mob. His parents and sister were also beaten up. Without any provocation, the mob beat Suleman up. He had come to Jamner to fill out a form for police recruitment. He was sitting in the cafe with some friends. We don't know why they beat him up.' Sabir Khan, another relative, said, 'Suleman was sitting in the cafe with friends. If the mob thought there was something objectionable happening, they could have taken them to the police station, which was next door. We urge Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to slap the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the accused, as was done in the Beed case.' He was referring to the murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district last year. Speaking to The Indian Express, Jalgaon District Collector Ayush Prasad said, 'The incident was very unfortunate. First, the mob attacked him in the cafe in Jamner and then took him to Betawad village. He was again beaten up in front of his parents. He suffered injuries. The mob then left the village.' 'Suleman's parents then took him to their house, where he sipped some water and fell unconscious. His parents rushed him to a hospital but he was declared brought dead by doctors,' Prasad added. Following his death, a large crowd gathered at the hospital and the police station. They refused to take custody of the body until the suspects were arrested. The district collector, who is also the executive magistrate, said the death created tense moments as a mob of 500 gathered at the police station demanding action. 'The police swung into action and immediately arrested two people the same day after registering an FIR. Immediately after the police took action, back-channel communication was maintained with leaders of all communities to ensure continued peace. There was no lathicharge or force used to ensure peace. An inquest of the body was conducted immediately, and a post-mortem was done the next morning at the government medical college. Around 300 people were present during the burial,' said Prasad. Highlighting the strong coordination between the district administration and the police, the district collector added, 'We maintained an effective back-channel communication which helped ensure the situation did not spiral out of hand and peace prevailed. We posted a Sub Divisional Officer with the aggrieved family. He was told to camp in the village. The SDM communicated all the demands of the family and emotional outbursts to the police. The police on their part took action and continuously communicated these actions to the family.' Prasad said that apart from the victim's family and community leaders, the families of the mob were also informed of the action taken. 'We ensured no excess action was taken against the families of the youths involved in the murder. We arrested only those involved. The SDM ensured no rumour-mongering and misunderstanding took place and kept the channel of communication open with both sides. We implemented the standard operating procedure systemically. The police took pro-active action. When a mob gathers, anything can happen including violence and stone-throwing, but we ensured continued peace with a lot of sympathy and empathy in all directions.' Prasad said it became clear that those in the mob were all youths. 'It appears that they are not affiliated with any right-wing organisations, as these organisations have denied any connections to the mob.' Prasad said an additional superintendent of police will lead the SIT investigating the case. Jalgaon Superintendent of Police Maheshwar Reddy said, 'We have slapped murder and lynching charges in the case.' Additional SP Kavita Nerkar, who is heading the SIT, said, 'The investigation is in progress… We are not labelling the incident as love jihad…So far, eight persons have been arrested.'

Nagpur: Eight Muslim men booked in 2006 for alleged SIMI links acquitted
A Nagpur court has acquitted eight Muslim men who were booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act over 18 years ago for alleged links with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India, The Indian Express reported. The men who were cleared in the case were Shakil Warsi, Shakir Ahmed Nasir Ahmed, Mohammad Rehan Atullakhan, Jiyaur Rahman Maheboob Khan, Wakar Baig Yusuf Baig, Imtiyaj Ahmed Nisar Ahmed, Mohammad Abrar Arif Mohammad Kashim and Sheikh Ahmad Sheikh. The order was passed on August 13, and was made public on Friday. The eight men had been booked for being members of an unlawful association (Section 10) and for unlawful activities (Section 13) under the Act. They were on bail while the trial was pending, The Indian Express reported. The police had booked the men in 2006, alleging that they had confidential information that they were involved in the activities of the Students Islamic Movement of India. However, judicial magistrate AK Bankar said in her order that there was no evidence of the accused persons having participated in meetings, engaged in propaganda or provided financial support to the Students Islamic Movement of India. 'Mere possession of literature or documents allegedly connected to unlawful association without proof of active intent or participation, does not meet the threshold laid down in the law,' the court said, according to The Indian Express. The judge said that on a perusal of the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses, none of them had 'made a whisper' about the offences alleged by the police.
