BAL x Hennessy: A night of cultural celebration
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is the premier men's basketball league in Africa, which typically runs each season from March to June and consists of 12 teams. This time the BAL took place from June 6 to 14 at the SunBet arena in Pretoria, featuring eight teams from across the continent. In a thrilling finale, Al Ahli Tripoli from Libya emerged victorious, defeating Petro de Luanda from Angola in the championship game on Saturday.
As part of its partnership, Hennessy brought together prominent figures, including Phindile Gwala, Gugu Nyatsumba and Kamo Modisakeng to name just a few, to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the continent through the universal language of sports.
We chatted to Lungile Mpharu, Hennessy Brand Manager, to discuss the luxury cognac brand's collaboration with BAL. He said that Hennessy and BAL share many values — a commitment to excellence, self-expression, and crafting experiences that transcend their core offerings. The partnership is about amplifying the energy of the BAL and intentionally enhancing the overall fan experience.
'For Hennessy, the BAL aligned with our legacy of partnering with platforms that shape culture. The opening weekend gave us a chance to contribute authentically, through curated experiences that are rooted in who we are. Whether it was the elevated lounge environment or how we engaged with friends of the house, our approach was to enhance the overall experience, and basketball, particularly through how BAL is opening new ways for people to connect across borders,' he said.
We caught up with celebrities and influencers who attended the BAL event to get their take on the exciting fusion of basketball and African culture.
South African actress Phindile Gwala said the atmosphere during halftime was fantastic, and it was heartening to see young people showing an increased interest in basketball. The growing enthusiasm from young people indicates a brighter future for basketball in our country and across the continent.
She added that the event emphasised inclusivity and highlighted Africa's potential in the sports industry, which can contribute to both global sports and the economy. 'We need more championships like this to nurture our African spirit and grow our economy.'

Orlando Pirates sent the South African football fraternity into a frenzy on Monday with the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou. Fresh from resigning at Marumo Gallants, Ouaddou was announced as the new Pirates coach, a move very few saw coming. After that a clip of Ouaddou speaking of and singing the praises of Pirates has surfaced. This came after his then side Marumo Gallants lost a Nedbank Cup semifinal 2-0 against his new side. In this clip, he admits to be a long-term admirer of the Buccaneers, before breaking down how he tried to beat them. Watch the clip below . Upon watching the clip, many Pirates fans commented, saying it gave the impression that Ouaddou always knew something. On Monday he was officially unveiled as the new coach, blindsiding many in the process. Earlier on Tuesday this publication reported that he has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Buccaneers. Ouaddou is expected to return to South Africa next week and lead pre-season proceedings. Pirates will once again depart for Spain in the second week of July. Prudence Sekgodiso clocks personal best as she wins 800m at Golden Spike
World indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso improved her personal best as she won the women's 800m at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Tuesday night. Sekgodiso led from the start, not counting the two pace-makers, to win in 1min 57.16ec, a meet record that was 0.1sec lower than her pervious best from last year. The South African middle distance queen was in control after the second pace-maker dropped out on the back straight and never looked in trouble as she stayed comfortably in front of training partner Oratile Nowe of Botswana and Nigist Getachew of Ethiopia, runner-up at the world indoor championships. Nowe overhauled Getachew in the sprint for the line to take second place in a 1:57.49 national record. The East African was third in 1:58.02. Douw Smit finished second in the men's javelin, hitting an 84.12m best to finish behind India's multiple Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra on 85.29. His effort in the second round gave him the lead until Chopra surpassed that in the third round. Smit also had the satisfaction of clearing 80m on three other throws. Tshepo Tshite, fresh from his 3:31.35 SA 1,500m record in Paris on Friday night, ended ninth in 3:34.14.

Sales: Special loading against 'Big Flu' for Mamelodi Sundowns in Club World Cup

Photo: AFP Image: AFP It's win or bust for Mamelodi Sundowns at the Fifa Club World Cup this afternoon as the South African champions look to make it into the knockout stage of the 32-team global showpiece. Sundowns face off against Brazilian outfit Fluminense in the final match of Group F, knowing that victory is the only way for them to finish in the top two and qualify for the round of 16. Currently third in the group with three points following their victory in the opener against Ulsan, Miguel Cardoso's team will be on six points should they win Wednesday That will be enough to see them knock the team from Brazil out of the competition. Fluminense, however, will progress with just a draw, which would take them to five points. But what if the unthinkable happens in the other match and Ulsan beat Borussia Dortmund, while Sundowns draw with Fluminense – aka the Big Flu? The South Africans and the Germans would then finish on four points each, and a one-goal defeat for Dortmund would leave both teams with a goal difference of zero. Sundowns would then lose out on head-to-head rules, courtesy of the 4-3 defeat they suffered on Saturday. Experienced as he is, Cardoso is surely not considering any other permutations and will have his team go in with the sole purpose of simply beating Fluminense. It is an achievable feat, even if the Brazilian outfit start as favourites. For starters, Sundowns will be full of confidence after their admirable showing against Dortmund. They staged a spirited comeback that ensured the scoreline remained respectable. Looking dead and buried at half-time as they trailed 3-1, and then going 4-1 down by the hour mark, the perennial South African champions did something local clubs are not renowned for. Ordinarily, a South African team would drop their heads and accept defeat, seeing out the match without much fight. Not so with this group — they dug deep and gave Dortmund a scare, scoring two late goals and forcing a nervy finish as they searched for an equaliser that never came. Attacker Arthur Sales says the squad are walking tall after that match and feel more empowered for the future. 'Everyone is very proud," said Sales on Tuesday. "I think we learnt many things because when you play these big teams, you learn about different things. And we will put the new lessons to use for this next game against Fluminense.' What should also count in their favour is that Fluminense are unlikely to play the high-press game that Dortmund used to force Sundowns into errors. Like Sundowns, the Brazilians enjoy building from the back and playing with flair. It makes for an exciting match, Sales expained. 'We have good things for playing against them, and I think it is going to be a nice game because both teams like to play with possession. I think it will be a good game.' 'I think everyone in the Fluminense team is a good player because they are at a good level to play for Fluminense in the World Cup,' he added, before singling out midfielder Martinelli as a potential danger to Sundowns. 'We need to give more attention to these guys.'
