UAE Launches Chief AI Officers Training Programme to Drive Tech Leadership
Led by the Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, the initiative is run in partnership with the University of Birmingham in Dubai. The programme aims to equip AI leaders across federal entities with advanced knowledge and skills to drive smart transformation across sectors.
Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence Omar Sultan Al Olama said the programme reflects the UAE's commitment to investing in talent and building a tech-driven future. 'Empowering leaders with the right tools and knowledge fuels national ambitions and enables innovation,'
he said.
The two-week training blends academic theory with hands-on learning. Participants explore the latest AI trends, governance frameworks, and real-world applications in areas such as healthcare, cybersecurity, energy, urban development, and entrepreneurship. The curriculum also covers ethics, regulations, machine learning, and generative AI.
Chief AI Officers were nominated following a UAE Cabinet decision led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Selection was based on candidates' ability to lead AI integration within their organisations and align with national strategic goals.
Delivered by global experts, the programme also encourages dialogue between UAE officials and international thought leaders, creating space for exchanging insights and best practices.
This initiative supports the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 and the broader 'We the UAE 2031' vision, reinforcing the country's position as a global hub for digital transformation and innovation.

Absence of Synergy on Diplomatic Messaging May Harm South Africa's Potential, International Relations (IR) Committee Chair
The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, has called on all government departments and officials to let the President give guidance on matters related to diplomacy and the US. Mr Mahumapelo said diplomatic relations is a complex terrain and needs to be monitored by people who are authorised at all times. It appears, he said, that everyone has an opinion on how the government and South Africa should relate with the world, owing to the much-publicised diplomatic challenges in South Africa's relationship with the US and the steep 30% US tariff increases imposed on South Africa, along with a host of other countries. Mr Mahumapelo said the committee believes that the government must be given space to consider how it will rebuild lasting relationships with the US that will be beneficial to South Africans and Americans alike. He added that it would be preferable if South Africa's special-envoy designate to the US leads in South Africa's response to any new trade packages. 'This will also enable for diplomatic negotiations between Pretoria and Washington, which is in the interest of all our citizens. We believe that South Africa remains the gateway to the markets in sub-Saharan Africa. It therefore is a diplomatic and trade channel that the US cannot contemplate to lose.' Mr Mahumapelo also noted what he called the unfortunate utterances attributed to the General of the South African National Defence Force relating to South Africa's relations with Iran. 'We believe our ambassador in the Middle East needed to have given guidance and approval on what had been widely reported, but the country requires no permission or endorsement on who it deals with at diplomatic level,' said Mr Mahumapelo. He said the absence of synergy in diplomacy may ruin South Africa's potential in an era of unstable geo-political relations. S&P raises India's credit rating to BBB in first upgrade for 18 years
S&P Global Ratings upgraded India 's long-term sovereign crediting rating to "BBB" from "BBB-" on Thursday, owing to the country's fiscal consolidation, credible monetary policy and strong economic growth. It was India's first upgrade in 18 years. 'The upgrade of India reflects its buoyant economic growth, against the backdrop of an enhanced monetary policy environment that anchors inflationary expectations,' S&P Global analysts wrote. "Together with the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation and efforts to improve spending quality, we believe these factors have coalesced to benefit credit metrics." S&P also raised India's short-term ratings to "A-2" from "A-3", adding that the outlook on the long-term rating is stable. It also revised its transfer and convertibility assessment to "A-" from "BBB+". India's Ministry of Finance said it welcomed S&P's decision to upgrade the country's credit rating. The ratings agency said India's economy had a 'remarkable comeback' from the Covid-19 pandemic, with real GDP growth averaging 8.8 per cent over the 2022 fiscal year to the 2024 fiscal year, the highest in the Asia-Pacific. Analysts said they expect GDP to increase 6.8 per cent annually over the next three years. 'India remains among the best performing economies in the world,' S&P Global said. S&P Global also expects the effects of the US tariffs on India's economy 'will be manageable', noting that about 60 per cent of its growth comes from domestic consumption. US President Donald Trump last week doubled India's tariff rate to 50 per cent because of its continued imports of Russian energy. 'We expect that in the event India has to switch from importing Russian crude oil, the fiscal cost, if fully borne by the government, will be modest given the narrow price differential between Russian crude and current international benchmarks,' analysts wrote. Analysts also anticipated that, factoring in sectoral exemptions on pharmaceuticals and consumer electronics, the exposure of Indian exports that would be subjected to tariffs at 1.2 per cent of GDP. While this could lead to a one-off hit to growth, S&P does not anticipate it will hurt India's long-term growth prospects. S&P also projected a general government deficit of 7.3 per cent of GDP in the 2026 fiscal year to fall to 6.6 per cent by to the 2029 fiscal year. It also anticipates the country's debt-to-GDP ratio to fall to 78 per cent by the 2029 fiscal year. S&P said it may lower the ratings if it finds weak political commitment to consolidated public finances. It may raise the ratings if fiscal deficits narrow in a way that would lower the general government debt below 6 per cent of GDP on a structural basis.

GCC General Secretariat participates in UAE AI Camp
14 Aug 2025 20:03 DUBAI (WAM)The National Programme for Artificial Intelligence and the National Programme for Coders, in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), organised two dedicated workshops as part of the UAE Artificial Intelligence Camp workshops aimed to empower participants and enhance their capabilities in the fields of artificial intelligence and future sessions focused on deepening participants' understanding of the dimensions and horizons of AI technologies, and on strengthening the readiness of governments, entities, and institutions for the era of AI at the Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, Dr. Abdulrahman Al Mahmoud, affirmed that the UAE Artificial Intelligence Camp serves as an inspiring model for international and regional cooperation, aimed at enhancing youth capabilities and skills, and channelling their energy toward innovation and digital noted that the participation of the General Secretariat of the GCC in the camp comes within the framework of supporting joint Gulf cooperation in the fields of digital transformation and artificial intelligence. Regional collaboration, he added, is a cornerstone for strengthening technological readiness and unifying efforts toward a sustainable digital future that keeps pace with rapid developments and fulfils the aspirations of two workshops aimed to enhance participants' capabilities by providing best practices in identifying and evaluating AI use cases, understanding the factors that make AI implementation a success story, and equipping them with practical models and global examples that can be applied to provide optimal recommendations for various workshops addressed several key topics, most notably: the role of AI agents; practical, government-related use cases; understanding the nature of AI agents; learning how they operate; assessing the feasibility of replacing or supporting human-like roles with AI agents; and envisioning how AI agents function in its launch, the UAE Artificial Intelligence Camp has witnessed strong engagement and broad participation from all segments of society, attracting more than 34,000 participants from various educational levels and academic backgrounds to its diverse activities, training workshops, and discussion sessions. These initiatives aimed to develop participants' skills using the latest technological solutions and innovations, covering seven main themes: the future of artificial intelligence; data science and machine learning; smart applications in education, healthcare, and the financial sector; web and robotics development; AI governance and ethics; cybersecurity; and virtual and augmented reality.
