Japanese airport given full Hello Kitty rebrand for World Expo 2025

Don't freak out when you try to board a flight to this southwestern Japanese prefecture and the destination on the ticket says 'Hello Kitty' — you're definitely on the right plane.
Oita, a scenic region known for its natural hot springs on the Japanese island of Kyushu, has recently renamed its air hub Oita Hello Kitty Airport to lure fans and tourists.
The six-month rebrand, which runs from now through October 13, will inject the otherwise sleepy airport with an extra dose of the country's quintessential cuteness — or 'kawaii' in Japanese.
As expected, Hello Kitty (who is, by the way, not a cat) is everywhere.
Arriving passengers peeking through plane windows will get their first greetings from the Japanese character painted on the boarding bridge. As they make their way to the luggage conveyor belt, they will see posters of Hello Kitty dragging a suitcase and riding on a miniature plane.
The rebranding rides on the hype of Osaka Expo 2025 and seeks to offer an alternative destination to the already congested ones, as Japan grapples with record numbers of tourists. The tourism boom — which hit a record-breaking 10.5 million in the first three months of 2025 — has given the world's fourth-biggest economy a needed kick but also created headaches for locals.
'We hope to encourage more tourists, particularly those who typically visit high-traffic destinations like Tokyo and Kyoto, to travel to Oita instead,' a spokesman from Oita Prefectural Government's tourism bureau told CNN on Thursday.
Oita is about one hour away from Osaka by plane and four hours by train.
Joining Hello Kitty at the Oita airport are friends like My Melody, Little Twin Stars and Pochacco. All are characters from Sanrio, the merchandising company behind her universe of cuteness.
Why Oita, though? Sanrio runs a theme park called Harmonyland in the prefecture. The company will be selling exclusive Hello Kitty key chains and t-shirts at the domestic terminal.
'In addition to attracting visitors not only from major metropolitan areas such as the Tokyo and Kansai regions but also by highlighting the unique appeal of Oita Prefecture and Kyushu such as hot springs, nature, and cuisine, we aim to leverage the global popularity of Japan's Sanrio characters and their theme park,' Sanrio said in a statement.
'We are filled with the hope that this airport will become a bridge connecting countless smiles,' Sanrio Entertainment President Aya Komaki said during a recent launch, before touting Hello Kitty's slogan written on a flag she holds in posters at the airport: 'Hello from Oita to the world.'
Oita prefecture sits about 40 miles southeast of Fukuoka, Kyushu's biggest city, and is home to some of Japan's most sought-after onsen towns, like Beppu and Yufuin.
It's more popular among local tourists than international visitors, though. Almost 80% of 530,033 visitors recorded last month were domestic travelers.
The airport operates mainly domestic flights, but also runs a few international routes to Seoul in South Korea and Taipei in Taiwan.
It is not the first airport to name itself after the nation's much-worshipped cartoon characters, with Japanese manga and anime being among the country's most influential exports.
In the central city of Tottori, officials renamed its airport Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport in 2015 to pay tribute to 'Case Closed,' a Japanese manga and anime series about a child detective, Conan, who battles criminals with cool gadgets a la James Bond.
The neighboring Yonago Kitaro Airport also took its name from another manga and anime series, 'GeGeGe no Kitaro,' which follows the quest of a young boy named Kitaro who fights off demons — or yokai in Japanese — to protect humans.
Other airports have also featured popular characters from Super Mario Bros and Pokemon in their tourism campaigns, even though they weren't down for a name change.
The country with one of the most complex train networks in the world also puts its favorite characters on trains, including — guess who — Hello Kitty.

Austin Proper Hotel has announced it will open Kappo Kappo, a 25-seat tasting counter that blends Japanese kappo dining with French culinary techniques later this year. The restaurant will be led by twin brothers Haru and Gohei Kishi, who ran the now-closed Proper Sandos by Kishi pop-up in the same space. Designed by Kelly Wearstler and Proper Hotels, the downtown restaurant will feature charred cypress, stone, and warm millwork in a nod to traditional Japanese craftsmanship. At the heart of the concept is kappo, a Japanese style of dining that translates to 'cut and cook.' Guests sit at a counter while chefs prepare and serve each course in real time, a format that emphasizes seasonality, precision, and intimacy. Kappo Kappo's 11-course menu will spotlight wagyu from both Texas and Japan, seafood sourced directly from Tokyo's Toyosu Market, and produce from local farms. Optional beverage pairings will include sake, wine, beer, and cocktails. The intention was to source all food locally, but the chefs say this isn't possible for certain ingredients, considering the quality they're aiming for. 'Rain carries minerals down from the mountains into the sea, and that environment gives the fish an incredible taste.' This is the sort of deep insight into the process that Kappo Kappo will offer diners. The brothers also plan to incorporate omiyage, the Japanese tradition of sending diners home with a small parting gift meant to extend the hospitality of the restaurant. For those unfamiliar with the term, kappo may sound a lot like omakase, but the brothers note that it differs in one key way: intimacy. Rather than leaving everything completely in the chef's hands, guests are invited into the process, able to watch, learn, and interact with chefs as each dish comes together. 'The storytelling component is important,' Haru says. 'When there's meaning behind a dish, it has more impact — it's not just flavor, it's memory.' Born in France to Japanese parents, the brothers say that Kappo Kappo is a natural expression of their upbringing. Gohei pursued a career in Japanese cuisine, while Haru trained in French traditions, including time with Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay. Between them, they bring decades of international experience across Paris, Tokyo, London, Los Angeles, Dubai, and Madrid. Outside of the brief Proper Sandos pop-up, this is the first time the two are cooking side-by-side, professionally at least. While Kappo Kappo will mostly focus on Japanese food, the French element will mainly manifest on the menu in the form of classic techniques. The inspiration for Kappo Kappo emanates from the Kishi brothers' childhoods. 'When we were kids, our parents had a ritual called 'on est bien,' which in French means 'we are good' or 'we feel good,'' Haru says. 'For us, it was about having really good food, really good drinks, and being together in a joyful place. That feeling is what we're bringing forward here.'

65 of our favorite places to eat in the San Fernando Valley

Los Angeles has many valleys, but only one is the Valley. You know it as soon as you crest over the 101, 405, 170 or 5 freeways, its bordering hills verdant or golden depending on the time of year. Pull off almost any exit and you'll immediately be greeted by shopping centers, strip malls, mom-and-pop markets and fine-dining dens serving up some of the city's most ambitious and heartfelt meals. Bounded by mountains on all sides, the San Fernando Valley spans 260 square miles and is home to nearly half of L.A.'s population, around 1.8 million people. Across its expanse, it assumes many identities. Long before its peaks and basins were crisscrossed with highways and miles-long boulevards, the Tongva people lived along the water-rich and wooded areas of the Valley for more than 7,000 years. In the late 18th century, Spanish settlers by way of Mexico traversed over the Santa Monica Mountains into what is now known as Encino. More than a century ago, the citrus orchards began to give way as Warner Bros., Walt Disney and Universal studios built out their filming lots. A tinge of Tinseltown and tourism followed, while room to grow brought a midcentury housing boom to the region. Themed restaurants and tiki haunts popped up to keep diners entertained. Now, it's difficult to find a Valley establishment that hasn't made a TV or film appearance. As Valley dwellers began settling in — immigrants, suburban families, celebrities — its food scene flourished in step. On Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, you'll find Casa Vega, its dim interior practically untouched since Rafael 'Ray' Vega first founded it in 1956. The son of Tijuana-born immigrants who ran popular Cafe Caliente on Olvera Street beginning in the 1930s, Vega introduced many Valley diners — including a flock of silver screen regulars — to Mexican-American staples such as fajitas and enchiladas. Farther south in Studio City, take your pick from a parade of Japanese restaurants along Sushi Row. The stretch of Ventura Boulevard became a hub for high-end Japanese cuisine after pioneering chef Kazunori Nozawa opened his Edo-style sushi restaurant Nozawa in 1987. Though that location has since closed, Nozawa has spawned a global restaurant empire with his KazuNori, Nozawa Bar and Sugarfish chains. Pull off the main drag and you'll find hidden gem burger shacks, taquerias, hot dog joints, kebab shops and neighborhood delis. Meanwhile, Valley residents are spearheading new concepts. 'We're born and bred Valley kids, so we had to do it in the Valley,' said Marissa Shammas on opening Yala Coffee, a Middle Eastern-inspired cafe, with her husband Zain Shammas in Studio City. '[People] commonly think [the Valley] is where things go to die — and we think that that's where things go to be more.' There's more to discover than ever when it comes to dining in the 818 (or 747). Eight Times food writers spent months exploring the Valley in search of the best for this guide, reconnecting with old favorites and finding new surprises. For me, it was also an exercise in nostalgia. Old shortcuts returned like muscle memory as I reacquainted myself with the Woodland Hills blocks where I navigated young adulthood. In North Hollywood, my home for several years into my early 30s, former standbys suddenly returned to the forefront of my mind: The tiki bar across the street from my old apartment, a hole-in-the-wall Puerto Rican restaurant where salsa music draws you in, a vibrant Jamaican bistro that now sits in Sherman Oaks. I found myself wishing I could linger in the Valley longer. Here are our favorites, spanning Filipino-Mexican fusion in a Northridge car wash-turned-restaurant, a DMV-adjacent street-stand for lamb barbacoa in Arleta and a fast-growing mini chain of Sephardic pastries.
