Black Bears McAnanama named FPHL Goalie of the Year

Yahoo29-04-2025

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Binghamton Black Bears have continued their success from last season in being one of the top teams in the FPHL, and the FPHL on Tuesday announced that the top goalie in the league this season is straight out of Visions Veterans Memorial Arena.
Black Bears goaltender Connor McAnanama was named the FPHL Goaltender of the Year for the 2024-25 season. He finished with 30 wins and a league-low goals against average of 2.08. He would set a Black Bears record this year with 34 starts, and a record of 30-3-1 with 4 shutouts.
The Black Bears will take on Carolina in a best-of-5 series in the FPHL Commissioner's Cup Finals, with games one and two taking place on the road in Carolina this weekend.

4 free agents the Panthers should consider signing before mandatory minicamp

4 free agents the Panthers should consider signing before mandatory minicamp In what was perhaps the least surprising (and to some, the most exasperating) development of the 2025 offseason, 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers finally agreed to join the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. The four-time Most Valuable Player, after months of "uncertainty," is now headed to the AFC North for the upcoming campaign—giving Pittsburgh the starting quarterback they've long needed to secure. So if the Steelers were able to fill a glaring need this late into the spring, can other teams also find themselves some effective remedies at this point? And can the Carolina Panthers, in particular, add the cherry on top of what's been a successful past few months? Well, they just might. Here are four remaining free agents the Panthers should consider signing before the start of next week's mandatory minicamp: CB Mike Hilton Last month's release of outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, the team's leading sack-getter in 2024, was a strong indicator that the Panthers are invested in their youth movement. In essence, they moved out the 32-year-old to move in the likes of 26-year-old Pat Jones II and their pair of Day 2 draft picks, Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. They may have the same train of thought at nickelback—where 2024 fifth-rounder Chau Smith-Wade, and perhaps even 2025 fourth-rounder Lathan Ransom, will get the opportunity to seize the position. But if they want a more proven presence on the inside, Hilton is as reliable as they come from the slot. CB Asante Samuel Jr. Carolina's prospects at outside cornerback aren't exactly great either. The unit isn't deep behind Pro Bowler Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, with Shemar Bartholomew and Akayleb Evans currently penciled in as the next line of defense. Samuel, 25, started in 47 of his 50 career games for the Los Angeles Chargers between 2021 and 2024. His playmaking ability, which has helped produce six interceptions and 37 passes defensed, could even give Jackson some competition as Horn's running mate. S Julian Blackmon Many Panthers fans have been waiting on their team to sign Blackmon for quite some time now. They got a little teaser back in March, when he was brought in for a visit, and haven't really heard anything on the 26-year-old since. While Tre'von Moehrig does have the chops to play both strong and free safety, Carolina may benefit from having a bonafide playmaker to pair with their big free-agent signing. Blackmon, who notched seven interceptions over the last two seasons, could (and maybe should) be that guy. S Justin Simmons Like Blackmon, Simmons presents a solid solution to the backend of the Panthers defense. Outside of Moehrig, Carolina's safety room consists of Ransom, Demani Richardson, Nick Scott and three undrafted rookies—so mixing in an established veteran would probably be a wise move. Simmons, a four-time second-team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, even spent a season with Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero back in Denver. Why Panthers Fans Must Temper Expectations for Jimmy Horn Jr.

Why Panthers Fans Must Temper Expectations for Jimmy Horn Jr. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Carolina Panthers have been desperate for a spark at wide receiver. So when rookie Jimmy Horn Jr. turned heads at minicamp with his blistering speed and natural agility, the fan base did what fan bases do, they got excited. Really excited. But it's time to tap the brakes. Advertisement Yes, Horn's early flashes were impressive. The 5-foot-10, 176-pound speedster offers the kind of vertical burst Carolina's offense lacked last season. After all, the Panthers finished dead last in the NFL in passing yards per game (161.2) in 2024. Add in Horn's upside as a return man, and you've got a player with real potential. But potential and production are two different things. Horn's college résumé doesn't scream 'immediate impact.' In four years across South Florida and Colorado, he totaled 1,967 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. His best season? Just 567 yards. For context, fellow rookie Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina's eighth overall pick surpassed 1,400 yards in one season at Arizona. Horn is a late-round flier, not a sure-thing starter. And while Horn could carve out a role as a special teams ace where he averaged 22.2 yards per kick return last year, his transition to NFL-caliber defensive backs will be a major test. As Brian Beversluis of Cat Scratch Reader noted, 'I'm not currently expecting more than a 53-man roster spot at best until we see some training camp and preseason reps.' For every Tyreek Hill who breaks out early, there are a dozen rookies who shine in May and disappear by October. The NFL is a grind, and hype doesn't catch passes. Advertisement Panthers fans have every right to be hopeful, especially after last year's strong finish. But hoping Jimmy Horn Jr. becomes Bryce Young's go-to target overnight sets the bar unfairly high. Let him grow, let him prove it, and most importantly, let's not expect a savior from a sixth-round pick just yet. Panthers WR Jimmy Horn Jr. Injury Update After Missed Practice

Panthers WR Jimmy Horn Jr. Injury Update After Missed Practice originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. is dealing with a hamstring injury. According to head coach Dave Canales, Horn missed Carolina's practice on Tuesday, but isn't expected to miss much time. Advertisement "He's got a hamstring that we're managing right now, so we're just rehabbing him," Canales told reporters. "He's in return to play." The Panthers will hold their final OTA practice on Friday. It comes before a three-day minicamp from June 10-12. Horn was one of the wide receivers drafted by the Panthers in April. The former Colorado standout gives quarterback Bryce Young a deep weapon in his third NFL season. Horn's speed makes him a threat against NFC South competition. Canales has raved about Horn's playmaking abilities. "Jimmy gives us a lot of options," Canales said. "There's some perimeter things we can do with him. The jet sweep game, but then also from his college film he's a receiver first and foremost. He can stretch the field. He can separate and he's got a lot of energy and passion." Related: Carolina Looks to Send Strong Message to Rest of NFL Horn's draft stock was low due to injury in his senior season. He suffered a lower body injury, which kept him out for the final month of the season. Advertisement Horn was one of three former Colorado receivers drafted in April, including Heisman winner Travis Hunter (Jacksonville Jaguars) and wide receiver LaJohntay Wester (Baltimore Ravens). He'll try to be a regular option in the Panthers' future plans. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 4, 2025, where it first appeared.
