Global icon Anthony Hamilton partners to eliminate period poverty and empower young girls
As South Africa shifts from the celebrations of Mandela Month into the fervour of Women's Month, global R&B sensation Anthony Hamilton is stepping into the spotlight to advocate for a cause that unites both commemorations: empowering young girls and eradicating period poverty. This initiative shines a light on a pressing issue faced by countless girls, particularly in disadvantaged communities. Hamilton, who was raised by a single mother, carries a deeply personal motivation for joining this worthy cause. 'This event celebrates us as people. I was raised by a single mother who taught me strength, compassion, and resilience. I am honoured to be part of an effort that builds confidence in young girls as I share my life and my music. I am proud to support this journey of making it lighter for girls by helping to eliminate period poverty and give them hope for a better future,' he remarked. On Thursday, a vibrant activation event geared towards this cause took place at Winile Secondary School in the Zonke iZizwe informal settlement in Katlehong. This school, located in a region grappling with high unemployment and child-headed households, has been a beneficiary of support from the Imbumba Foundation since 2013, which has implemented its Caring4Girls Programme aimed at providing essential dignity packs to girls. Richard Mabaso, CEO of the Imbumba Foundation, highlighted the significance of their long-standing partnership with Winile Secondary School. 'For over a decade, we have walked alongside Winile Secondary School. We started supporting it in 2013, and today, six learners are here representing hundreds of girls who receive dignity packs through our Caring4Girls Programme. To date, we have reached over three million learners nationwide. The upcoming event is more than a concert; it is a lifeline, a symbol of hope, and an opportunity to continue transforming lives,' Mabaso stated. Among the beneficiaries is 16-year-old Refiloe Mofokeng, a Grade 10 learner who expressed her gratitude and inspiration: 'Having Anthony Hamilton here is inspiring. It shows that no matter where you come from, you can still be confident and believe in yourself. This is not just an event for fun. It's about empowering girls like me to dream bigger and feel supported.' Event promoter Mandisa Makhalima stressed the collective responsibility required to tackle the issue of period poverty. 'This battle requires all of us, artists, businesses, communities, and individuals, to work together. Mandela Month reminds us of service, and Women's Month reminds us of the strength of women and girls. Through this concert, we are combining both legacies to uplift those who need it most and to help end period poverty.' South Africans have been called to mark their calendars for Saturday, August, 9, 2025 when a concert featuring Hamilton will take place with the portion of ticket sales set to directly benefit the Imbumba Foundation's Caring4Girls Programme, ensuring that even more girls have the opportunity to attend school with dignity and confidence. Shock as SA couple 'charge' guests up to R65k to attend wedding
TikTok content creators Tisha and Thabang Mokoena have pranked South Africans into believing their outrageous wedding demand in a post that has gone viral. The couple, who married in 2023, spoofed the country by inviting wedding guests to spend thousands of rands to attend their special day. On the X app, a screenshot of a TikTok prank by the couple quickly went viral. In it, Tisha and Thabiso Mokoena demanded that guests choose a wedding package to attend their special day. The price guide contained three categories for table reservations: Bronze for R20 000, which included a bar tab of R5000, a meal platter, and an Instagram tag by the couple Silver for R30 000, which included first row seating, a bar tab worth R7 500, and a 'VIP pictures' with the couple. Gold for R65 000, which featured a 'VVIP access to pre-wedding activities', a speech, and a bar tab at over R10 000. The X post – viewed almost a million times – had many South Africans gawking at the audacity of the couple. However, it was all for laughs as the TikTokers have been known to post comedic posts about love, marriage, and relationships. One South African who hopped on the gag was media personality Anele Mdoda, who is planning her white wedding. The 947 presenter reposted the invitation, telling her followers: 'Tickets are selling out fast for our wedding. Early bird tickets are done'. In April, Anele announced her engagement to partner, Bulelela 'Buzza' James, with a traditional lobola celebration. They are expected to host a grand wedding celebration in the coming months. Tyla achieves double gold in the US with ‘Jump' and ‘Push 2 Start'
South Africa is beaming with pride as global music sensation Tyla continues to break barriers. This week, Tyla's singles Jump and Push 2 Start both officially crossed an important milestone in the United States. Both songs earned Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). That means each song has now sold more than 500,000 units in the US. This is equivalent to over R9.1 million in sales per song, at current exchange rates, according to Table Chart. This is a massive achievement, especially for a young artist hailing from Johannesburg. Tyla's energetic sound and global appeal have taken the world by storm. These new certifications cement her place among South Africa's brightest musical exports. 'To know that my songs are enjoyed by so many people, not just at home but internationally, is a blessing I do not take lightly,' Tyla shared on Instagram. 'My fans have always held me up, and this is our win!' Earning Gold status in the US is no small feat for any musician. For artists from outside the country, the bar is even higher. The RIAA awards a Gold certification when a song has sold at least 500,000 copies through a combination of sales and streaming. This marks true mainstream success. For South Africans, this news feels even more special. Tyla's story inspires young creatives who see her as living proof that it is possible to reach global heights from the African continent. Songs like Jump and Push 2 Start resonate with audiences in Johannesburg and New York alike. Her relatable lyrics and infectious energy have made her a favourite on both streaming platforms and international radio stations. With this latest achievement, industry insiders predict Tyla is set for even greater things. There's already talk of upcoming international collaborations, music videos, and a highly anticipated album. Tyla's Gold records are a powerful reminder that South African artists belong on the biggest stages. Her journey is inspiring a new wave of local musicians.
