PLDT outlasts Creamline to book first-ever finals appearance in PVL On Tour

PLDT is heading to the championship stage for the first time ever.
Savi Davison rained down attacks on Creamline in the deciding set to steer PLDT to a 27-25, 22-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-10 win in the 2025 PVL On Tour knockout semifinals on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Filipina-Canadian outside spiker poured eight points in the fifth frame as the High Speed Hitters turned back the multi-titled Cool Smashers, booking their spot in the championship round against Chery Tiggo.
The win also allowed PLDT to extend its unbeaten run to seven games after going undefeated in group stage with a 5-0 card and sweeping ZUS Coffee in the quarterfinals.
Davison, who missed the group stage action after staying in Canada for a while, starred in the final frame, which she opened with back-to-back kills from the left wing before another kill from her sent PLDT to a momentum-setting 3-1 start.
But Creamline showed poise behind the clutch shots from veteran spiker Jema Galanza, who converted three points to fuel a 4-2 rampage and help Creamline pull within one point, 9-10.
But the Cool Smashers couldn't halt Davison as the high-flying spiker unleashed three consecutive attacks, including a sharp cut shot that gave PLDT a 13-9 lead. They then clinched the match point off a costly attack error from Alyssa Valdez for a 14-9 advantage.
Michele Gumabao saved one point for Creamline on an opposite kill, but Davison put the punctuation by avoiding the two-woman block of Sheena Toring and Gumabao to steer PLDT to its first-ever finals appearance.
PLDT came close to a finals stint in 2024 when it tangled with Akari in the semifinals of the Reinforced Conference. But controversy marred the match following a non-call late in the fifth set, which eventually allowed the Chargers to take the victory and march to the finals against Creamline.

Creamline, Chery Tiggo sweep Farm Fresh, Nxled to complete PVL On Tour semis cast

Creamline and Chery Tiggo made quick work of Farm Fresh and Nxled in their respective quarterfinals duels to complete the semifinals cast of 2025 PVL On Tour on Saturday at the Philsports Arena. Creamline had to weather a late surge from Farm Fresh before pulling off a 25-19, 25-19, 26-24 victory while Chery Tiggo eked out a dominant 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 decision over the Chameleons. The Cool Smashers started out hot in Set 3 after racing to a 9-3 lead with veteran opposite hitter Michele Gumabao unleashing a flurry of attacks before a Jema Galanza service ace put the multi-titled team in an 18-11 lead. But the Foxies proved they have a fight in them with middle blocker Rizza Cruz unloading back-to-back running kills that capped their 7-2 rampage and pulled them within two, 20-18. An infraction at the service line from Caitlyn Viray saw Creamline clinch the match point at 24-21, but Farm Fresh refused to quit and responded with three straight points led by Trisha Tubu's block on Alyssa Valdez and own attack as they forced a deadlock. Gumabao, though, answered with a familiar attack from the right side before Jeanette Panaga finished it off with an ace as Creamline cruised to the next round despite a shaky start in the tournament. Gumabao top-scored with 15 points while Valdez churned out 12 markers and nine receptions. Galanza chipped in 10 points and six digs in another display of force by Creamline. Meanwhile, Chery Tiggo displayed a collective effort in dispatching a promising crew of Nxled. Cess Robles fronted the offense with 12 points laced with four receptions, but she got ample help from the rest of her teammates with veteran Ara Galang and rookie Renee Peñaflor each posting 11 markers. The Cool Smashers are now pitted against the unbeaten PLDT High Speed Hitters while the Crossovers will take on top-seeded Cignal in the semis round that starts on Tuesday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Teen sensation Mboko stuns Osaka to win Canadian Open

Aug 7, 2025; Montreal, QC, Canada; Victoria Mboko (CAN) tournament winner against Naomi Osaka (JPN) holds her trophy at IGA Stadium. (Photo: David Kirouac-Imagn Images/REUTERS) Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko staged a stunning comeback on Thursday to defeat four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 2-6 6-4 6-1 claiming her maiden WTA 1000 title at the Canadian Open. The 18-year-old staged a remarkable comeback after losing the opening set to the Japanese former world number one, who had established a 3-0 lead as Mboko struggled with costly service errors. However, the home favourite found her rhythm in the second set, breaking serve to establish a 5-2 lead. Osaka struggled to catch up, and her poor returns allowed Mboko to level the match and force a decider. The decisive moment came in the third set, when Mboko took a 3-1 lead after saving four break points in a pivotal fourth game that gave her a firm grip on the match as she went on to claim the title after two hours and four minutes of play. "I want to thank Naomi from an incredible match. I've always looked up to her when I was very little. It's always great to play with such an amazing player like you," Mboko said. "I couldn't be more grateful," she added. Mboko, currently ranked 85th in the world, became the first Canadian to defeat three former Grand Slam champions in a single WTA event in the Open Era, with victories over Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina. For Osaka, who was attempting to revive her career after an inconsistent period following her return from maternity leave, the defeat brought her groundbreaking tournament to an end. This loss also extended Osaka's title drought; her last triumph came at the 2021 Australian Open. —Reuters
