Egypt: Edita Food Industries reports record-breaking revenues of $317mln in FY2024

Zawya10-03-2025

Edita Food Industries S.A.E. has announced a milestone year, with revenues soaring 33.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) to reach EGP 16.1 billion in 2024. The company's strategic diversification, successful pricing strategies, and regional expansion efforts have played a pivotal role in its impressive financial performance.
Edita's net profit climbed to EGP 1.4 billion, bolstered by a surge in revenues across all product segments. The cake segment, which remains the company's primary revenue driver, grew 37.1% y-o-y, contributing to more than 50% of total revenues. Meanwhile, smaller product segments saw remarkable expansion, with wafers, biscuits, and candy revenues rising by 60.8%, 144.4%, and 57.6% y-o-y, respectively.
Pricing Strategy Drives Profitability Amid Inflation
Despite inflationary pressures and the impact of the Egyptian pound's devaluation, Edita successfully navigated cost challenges through strategic repricing and commercial initiatives. This resulted in a gross profit of EGP 4.9 billion, reflecting a 25% increase y-o-y. The company maintained a gross profit margin (GPM) of 30.4% for the year, with a notable improvement in the fourth quarter, where GPM reached 30.9%.
Expanding Regional Presence: Morocco and Iraq Take Center Stage
Edita's regional expansion efforts yielded significant results in 2024, with net export sales rising 42.1% y-o-y to EGP 1.6 billion. Edita Morocco played a crucial role in this growth, recording EGP 475.6 million in revenues, up 45.8% y-o-y, as its second production line reached higher utilization levels. The company also leveraged Morocco as a strategic hub to enter West African markets, with its first shipment to Mauritania completed in November 2024.
Further strengthening its regional footprint, Edita made a strategic move into the Iraqi market, one of the region's fastest-growing snack food sectors. In January 2025, the company acquired a 49% stake in Tuama Jebur Abbas, a Baghdad-based manufacturer, with plans to commence operations in the second half of the year.
With a diversified portfolio, strong export momentum, and continued regional expansion, Edita is well-positioned for sustained growth in 2025 and beyond.

The agreements were formalised at Kuwait's Bayan Palace during the official visit of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court of the UAE. In the defence sector, UAE's EDGE Group signed a AED9 billion (US$2.45 billion) contract with Kuwait's Ministry of Defence for the acquisition of 'Falaj 3' class missile boats. It represents the largest naval shipbuilding export in the region and ranks among the most valuable naval exports globally. Additionally, Kuwait Real Estate Company, through its subsidiary IFA Hotels and Resorts, signed a AED198 million contract with UAE-based Darwish Engineering to execute infrastructure works for the Al Tay Hills residential project in Sharjah. Another agreement saw Kuwait Investment Authority joining the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership along with MGX, BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners, and Microsoft, to boost AI infrastructure investment. The newly signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) also cover health, diplomacy, road and land transport infrastructure, social development, advanced technology, education, oil and gas, energy and investment. Tether Strengthens Global Footprint as U.S. Tightens Crypto Regulations

Tether, the issuer of the world's most widely used stablecoin USDT, is intensifying its focus on emerging markets across Asia and Latin America, as U.S. lawmakers advance stringent legislation that could reshape the digital asset landscape. From January 2024 to February 2025, USDT accounted for between 62% and 91% of global stablecoin payment volumes, with Asia and Latin America leading adoption. Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan collectively represented 36.3% of global stablecoin traffic, while the United States trailed at 18.7%. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino reaffirmed the company's commitment to these regions, stating that the firm will continue prioritizing emerging markets outside the U.S., despite regulatory progress and a pro-crypto administration. Ardoino emphasized that the company sees more opportunity abroad than under strict upcoming U.S. laws. ADVERTISEMENT In a strategic move to deepen its presence in Latin America, Tether announced a significant investment in Orionx, a Chile-based cryptocurrency exchange and financial infrastructure firm. Orionx operates across Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico, offering services such as cross-border payments, remittances, and treasury solutions. The investment aims to enhance Orionx's technological capabilities and scale stablecoin-powered infrastructure throughout the region. Ardoino highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that the investment supports a high-impact company and advances Tether's broader vision of making stablecoin-powered financial tools accessible to underserved communities across Latin America. The surge in stablecoin adoption in Latin America is attributed to economic instability and high inflation rates in countries like Argentina and Brazil. Stablecoins offer a more stable store of value and a means to conduct transactions without relying on volatile local currencies. Tether's USDT has become a preferred option for everyday needs such as saving, sending money to family, and conducting business transactions. Meanwhile, in the United States, the regulatory landscape for stablecoins is undergoing significant changes. The Senate is advancing the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act, which introduces stricter regulations on stablecoin issuers, focusing on consumer protection, national security, and financial system integrity. Key provisions include prohibiting yield offerings by stablecoins, mandating audits, and enhancing anti-money laundering protocols. Despite the U.S. administration's pro-crypto stance, with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance advocating for the industry, the GENIUS Act reflects a bipartisan effort to establish a robust regulatory framework. The act has garnered support in the Senate, passing a motion to proceed with a 69-31 vote. However, the legislation has sparked debate among lawmakers. Some Democrats express concerns over potential conflicts of interest due to the Trump family's direct involvement in crypto ventures. Senators Chris Murphy and Elizabeth Warren have opposed the bill on ethical grounds, while others like Senators Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand support it, emphasizing the need for consumer protection and clearer crypto regulations.

Exclusive: Greece to lobby Egypt against Haftar endorsing Turkey-Libya maritime deal

Greece is expected to ask Egypt to intervene to dissuade the government in eastern Libya backed by General Khalifa Haftar from ratifying a maritime agreement with Turkey, Middle East Eye can reveal. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis is expected to raise the issue with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty on Wednesday, two regional officials with knowledge of the matter told Middle East Eye. Libya's internationally recognised government in Tripoli signed a contentious maritime demarcation agreement with Turkey in 2019 that ignored Greece's claims to exclusive economic zones, including via major Greek islands like Crete and Rhodes. Greece countered that maritime agreement the next year by signing its own deal with Egypt. Haftar-controlled eastern Libya has opposed Turkey's ambitions for years and is backed by Cairo along with the UAE. Any move by eastern Libya to endorse Turkey's position would represent a sea change for the eastern Mediterranean, where regional actors hope to develop potentially lucrative natural gas deposits. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters It would be a major boost for Ankara's bid to assert itself as the dominant maritime power in the region as it would put all of Libya's factions in line with Turkey's claims. If the deal is pursued it could reawaken maritime tensions in the region which saw Greece and Turkey edge close to conflict in the summer of 2020. Greece and Cyprus are already alarmed. But any recognition of Turkey's maritime claims could also irk Israel. Greece, Cyprus and Israel want to develop gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean and build a subsea electrical inter-connector, but those projects have stalled. If Haftar-controlled eastern Libya ratifies the maritime deal, it could provide cover to Syria's new government to strike its own accord with Ankara that includes Northern Cyprus, a breakaway region whose independence is recognised only by Turkey, one of the regional officials told MEE. Saddam Haftar opens dialogue with Turkey Eastern Libya would also find itself in direct confrontation with the Egypt-Greece maritime agreement. Cairo did not recognise all of Greece's claims to exclusive economic zones via its islands in that 2020 agreement, but a wide swath of it contradicts the Turkey-Tripoli deal. The Tobruk-based Libyan House of Representatives in June established a committee to review the deal Tripoli endorsed. Israel's Netanyahu lobbying US against F-35 sale to Turkey, sources say Read More » Just a few years ago, it would have been unthinkable for Haftar-controlled eastern Libya to consider signing a maritime deal with Turkey. The shift represents just how fast the region is reordering itself. In 2019, Haftar launched a months-long offensive to take Tripoli with the backing the UAE, Egypt and Russia. Turkey successfully intervened to defend its ally, sending mercenaries, soldiers and drones. But Khalifa Haftar is now courting Turkish support. In April, his son and potential successor, Saddam, paid a landmark visit to Ankara. Libya's eastern and western governments are jockeying for influence and access to the country's oil riches - the largest in Africa. Greece was able to lean on Egypt in 2020 to counter Turkey because ties between Ankara and Cairo were strained. Libya was just one flashpoint in the relationship. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi came to power after leading a 2013 military coup, that overthrew Egypt's democratically elected Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi. He was an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As late as 2019, Erdogan refused to recognise Sisi's legitimacy. However, in recent years Ankara and Cairo have patched up ties. Any effort by Egypt to lobby eastern Libya against the Turkey deal could inflame tensions in the recently thawed relationship.
