Jorhat, Jul 19 (PTI) Two girl students in Assam's Jorhat district on Saturday served as the district commissioner (DC) and additional deputy commissioner for the day.
Both were winners of an essay competition on the topic 'One day as district commissioner', conducted as a part of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' programme. The contest was open for girls of 14-25 years, with winners to get a chance to serve as DC or ADC for a day, along with other prizes.
Jorhat DC Jay Shivani said the initiative was aimed at encouraging young girls to take an interest in governance.
While postgraduate student Geetashree Sharma served as the district commissioner (DC), class 9 student Sanshita Baruah worked as the additional district commissioner (ADC) for the day, with both gathering an experience of a lifetime.
'This initiative was meant to encourage young girls to develop an interest in governance and aim high. Geetashree and Sanshita proved to be very capable, showing active interest in the happenings and posing questions whenever they were in doubt," Shivani said.
The DC said they attended a video conference with the Chief Secretary and took an overview of the various responsibilities of the district commissioner's office.
Geetashree, a student of CKB Commerce College in Jorhat, said it was a unique experience for her.
'It was a rare opportunity to observe the working of the highest office in the district from close quarters. We were explained how the policies work and decisions are implemented," she said.
Student of Pragjyotika Senior Secondary School, Titabor, Sanshita was also overwhelmed with the experience.
'It was great to learn that our district is performing well in most developmental parameters," the young girl added. PTI SSG SSG RG

File photo: Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal (Picture credit: PTI) Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said that discussions with the United States on the proposed bilateral trade agreement are progressing swiftly. Addressing the media, Goyal said that negotiations with Washington are 'making fast progress', as per news agency PTI. A team from the US is scheduled to visit India in August for the next round of negotiations. The fifth round of talks between the two countries concluded last week in Washington. Both sides are now working towards finalising the first tranche of the agreement by fall, around September or October. The goal is to significantly boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at $191 billion, with an aim to raise it to $500 billion. Goyal also mentioned that negotiations for a free trade agreement with Oman are 'almost finalised.' The trade discussions with the US are expected to focus on ironing out remaining differences, particularly around sectors such as agriculture and dairy, where India has traditionally maintained a cautious stance. Earlier, Goyal had said that 'fantastic progress' was being made and stressed the importance of a 'consequential partnership' with the US. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo He also indicated that India is seeking 'preferential market access' in the US compared to its global competitors, aiming to leverage its early engagement in the negotiations. The minister had underscored that successful trade negotiations require flexibility and a balanced approach. 'One has to have a broad mind and a package which is balanced and can give equity to both sides,' he had said, while cautioning against rigid timelines. Delhis CM Shri schools likely to be inaugurated in September

New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The Delhi government is likely to inaugurate its newly announced CM Shri Schools in September, an official said, as preparations to operationalise the institutions gather pace. The initiative, announced earlier this year, aims to offer high-quality, future-ready education in government schools. 'The CM Shri Schools are expected to open in September. Most of the shortlisted schools are under construction," the official said. Earlier, Education Minister Ashish Sood had said that the government had provisionally shortlisted 75 schools to be developed under the CM Shri model. 'These schools will start functioning soon and preparations to operationalise them are underway," Sood said. The CM Shri Schools, modelled after the Centre's PM Shri Schools, will follow the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and implement the National Curriculum Framework 2023. According to officials, these institutions are being developed with a focus on sustainability, operating as zero-waste and solar-powered campuses. Each school will be equipped with AI-enabled libraries, smart classrooms featuring augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) tools, smartboards, biometric attendance systems and robotics laboratories to promote innovation among students. The Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) is also being phased out, and its affiliated schools will now be brought under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Directorate of Education has already begun the recruitment process for teaching and leadership positions. Two separate circulars issued on June 5 and June 10 invited applications from eligible teaching staff and school leaders who have at least five years of service remaining. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had allocated Rs 100 crore for the CM Shri Schools in her budget speech earlier this year.
