PTI
Jorhat, Jul 19 (PTI) Two girl students in Assam's Jorhat district on Saturday served as the district commissioner (DC) and additional deputy commissioner for the day.
Both were winners of an essay competition on the topic 'One day as district commissioner', conducted as a part of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' programme. The contest was open for girls of 14-25 years, with winners to get a chance to serve as DC or ADC for a day, along with other prizes.
Jorhat DC Jay Shivani said the initiative was aimed at encouraging young girls to take an interest in governance.
While postgraduate student Geetashree Sharma served as the district commissioner (DC), class 9 student Sanshita Baruah worked as the additional district commissioner (ADC) for the day, with both gathering an experience of a lifetime.
'This initiative was meant to encourage young girls to develop an interest in governance and aim high. Geetashree and Sanshita proved to be very capable, showing active interest in the happenings and posing questions whenever they were in doubt," Shivani said.
The DC said they attended a video conference with the Chief Secretary and took an overview of the various responsibilities of the district commissioner's office.
Geetashree, a student of CKB Commerce College in Jorhat, said it was a unique experience for her.
'It was a rare opportunity to observe the working of the highest office in the district from close quarters. We were explained how the policies work and decisions are implemented," she said.
Student of Pragjyotika Senior Secondary School, Titabor, Sanshita was also overwhelmed with the experience.
'It was great to learn that our district is performing well in most developmental parameters," the young girl added. PTI SSG SSG RG

India announces ₹4,850 crore Line of Credit to Maldives
India is proud to be the most trusted friend of the Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday (July 25, 2025) after announcing a ₹4,850 crore line of credit to the island nation. Mr. Modi made the remarks after holding wide-ranging talks with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, focusing on consolidating cooperation in areas of trade, defence and infrastructure. The Prime Minister's visit marked a major turnaround in India-Maldives ties after a spell of unease. Maldives holds an important place in India's 'Neighbourhood First'; policy and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision, the Prime Minister said. Mr. Modi landed in Male this morning to a warm welcome with Muizzu and a number of top ministers of his government receiving the Prime Minister at the Velena international airport, reflecting the importance Male attached to the trip. Hours later, Mr. Modi was accorded a colourful ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour at the iconic Republic Square. 'Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come', Mr. Modi said in a social media post. The two leaders held a one-on-one meeting before settling down for delegation-level talks. The turnaround in the bilateral ties assumes significance as Mr. Muizzu, known to be close to China, came to power in the island nation in November 2023 on the back of an 'India Out'; campaign. His policies in the first few months of his presidency resulted in severe strain in the ties. Within hours of his oath, he had demanded the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from his country. Subsequently, India replaced the personnel with civilians. The Indian military personnel were deployed to the Maldives to maintain and operate two helicopters and an aircraft, which were used for humanitarian and rescue operations. It is widely believed that New Delhi's sustained efforts, including its assistance to the island nation to deal with economic woes, helped bring the relations back on track. The Maldives is one of India's key maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region and the overall bilateral ties, including in areas of defence and security, witnessed an upward trajectory under the previous governments in Male.

Kerala govt to continue with revised school timings
Agency: Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 25 (PTI) The Kerala government on Friday decided to continue with the revised educational calendar for the academic year 2025-26, despite opposition from certain religious organisations. After holding discussions with the managements of schools run by various community organisations, including Muslim Educational Society (MES), Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP), Nair Service Society (NSS), and Samastha here, state Education Minister V Sivankutty told reporters that the government will stick to the revised timings in schools. As for the next academic year, further discussions can be held on the subject along with other issues that might crop up in future, the minister said. As per the government's decision, all schools will start their classes from 9.45 am instead of 10 am and end at 4.15 pm instead of 4 pm, he said. Muslim organisations had opposed the timing, saying that religious studies in the morning at the Madrassas will be disrupted with the revised timings. The minister claimed that all those who took part in the discussion were convinced about the objective of the decision, made according to a High Court verdict based on the recommendations of a panel set up by the government. Sivankutty said the government talked with the managements as discussions were essential in a democratic set-up when different opinions are expressed. 'We convinced them of the need to revise the timings in accordance with the Court's directions and state education rules, he said. The Kerala Education Rules prescribe 128 working days for 1-4 classes, 200 working days for 5-7 classes, and 204 working days for 8-10 classes in an academic year. 'It is only a matter of an extra 15 minutes in the morning and no one needs to be too much concerned about it," he said. Replying to a query, he said anyone can approach the court if they have complaints regarding the decision. The minister said a safety audit will be conducted in all the schools across the state. Deputy Directors of Education have been asked to inform the respective district collectors about the safety status of schools in their areas. BJP MP, Himachal Governor's ‘Udta Punjab' Remarks On Drugs Spark Row, AAP Reacts
Last Updated: A political clash erupted between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh after BJP MP Kangana Ranaut claimed drug addiction in Himachal is due to smuggling from Pakistan via Punjab. A fresh political slugfest broke out between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh after BJP Lok Sabha MP Kangana Ranaut on Friday claimed that drug addiction among Himachal Pradesh youth is rising because of smuggling from Pakistan through Punjab. She echoed similar sentiments of Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla who yesterday warned that if immediate action is not taken to eradicate drug menace, Himachal Pradesh would become ' Udta Punjab" in the next five years. These remarks have drawn a strong rebuttal from Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party. What Kangana Ranaut Said? The actor-turned-politician linked the rising drug abuse in her home state to narcotics trafficking from Pakistan via Punjab, saying that it is impacting Himachal's youth and families. 'The state of drug abuse across Himachal Pradesh is dire.I agree with the Governor's 'Udta Punjab' remark as teens and children in the state are gullible and get easily involved in drugs coming from Pakistan via Punjab," she said while speaking outside Parliament as quoted by news agency PTI. Ranaut further claimed that many young Himachalis were falling victim to addiction and turning to crime. 'Our children are gullible, naïve and simple," she claimed. What Himachal Pradesh Governor Said? A day earlier on Thursday, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla echoed similar sentiments and warned that the hill state could soon become "Udta Punjab" if no immediate action is taken to eradicate the drug menace. While addressing mediapersons in Shimla, he said that the NDPS cases rose by 340 per cent from around 500 in 2012 to about 2200 in 2023, and expressed concern over the "rising" menace of substance abuse in the state. The governor emphasised the urgent need for the state government to establish a new state-of-the-art de-addiction and rehabilitation centre. There is only one rehab run by the Red Cross in Kullu and we have been hearing that land is being identified for setting up a rehabilitation centre in the Sirmaur district, but nothing is moving on ground," he said as quoted by PTI. AAP Minister's Rebuttal Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema responded to the remarks and accused the BJP MP of irresponsibility. 'The nation knows Kangana very well. She comes from the film industry, doesn't know much, and tries to pull the same stunts here. She just wants attention. The BJP should either restrain her or remove her from the party," he said as quoted by PTI.
