Heat Advisory returns plus an Extreme Heat Warning starts off the new week!
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – As if Sunday wasn't hot enough, gear up for a toasty start to the new week. Sunday's Heat Advisory ended at 8 p.m. leading to a brief 'cool down' through the overnight, But it'll warm up pretty fast early on come Monday eventually getting up to 96-degrees with mostly sunny skies and a few scattered showers in the forecast. Another Heat Advisory will be in effect for your Monday starting at 10 a.m. and running until 8 p.m. There will also be an Extreme Heat Warning in effect starting at 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. on Monday for the following areas: St. James, St. John The Baptist, St. Charles, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Jefferson, and Plaquemines parishes in addition to Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties. When you put the forecasted temperatures together with the expected 'very humid' conditions, we will surely have Heat Index values nearing or even surpassing the 110-mark. I may sound like a broken record at this point because I can't stress the importance of heat safety and the following simple tips: (a) stay hydrated, (b) limit your time outdoors especially during the peak hours of the day and (c) check-in on family and friends who don't particularly do well in the dangerous heat. With what's currently expected for Tuesday in terms of the temperature and level of humidity, there's a pretty good chance that we could see another Heat Advisory for that day as well. Man arrested in connection with fatal New Orleans hit-and-run
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A man was arrested on Wednesday, July 30, in connection with a fatal hit and run investigation in New Orleans. According to the New Orleans Police Department, 20-year-old Dyllan Parr of Slidell turned himself in to the NOPD with his attorney. He was booked into the Orleans Justice Center. Boater found stuck in St. Tammany Parish marsh by deputies rescued Parr accused of being involved in a two-vehicle crash on July 27 near the Read Boulevard exit on I-10 Eastbound that left the driver of a Mazda 626 dead. NOPD said investigators believe the driver of the Mazda, a 53-year-old woman, was possibly stopped in the roadway or experiencing trouble when the driver of a Mercedes Benz allegedly rear-ended the Mazda and crashed into a concrete guardrail. The driver is accused of then fleeing on foot. New Orleans police investigating two fatal shootings near St. Roch Thursday morning
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating two separate shootings near the St. Roch neighborhood that killed two men on Thursday morning. According to the NOPD, around 4:16 a.m. they were alerted of a shooting at the corner of North Miro and Mandeville streets. Upon arrival, NOPD officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his body. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Man arrested in connection with fatal New Orleans hit-and-run Minutes later, at 4:22 a.m., a second shooting happened in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue. There, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his body. He was also pronounced dead on the scene. 'This happened right here in front of my house. This area has gotten really bad,' said a St. Roch resident. It's unclear at this time if the two shootings are connected. However, one resident who wished not to be on camera says the sound of bullets and screams woke him up. He was heartbroken to see a body lying just feet from his front door. 'She was screaming. And I can tell she was running. There was a male on the floor, right on the ground, right there by the bus stop. Everybody was screaming Call 911 I did. By the time they got the police got here, he was dead,' said a St. Roch resident. 'Who's next? You know what I'm saying. They kill every day at the sport of the moment,' said Bertrand Coleman. Coleman says it's hard to believe crime is down, as recent statistics indicate, when someone seems to lose a loved one every day. For him and others, hearing gunshots is the norm. 'People are going to continue on that and get killed because you don't have no programs for them? Okay. I told them a long time ago. In the community, you're going to hear some kind of gunshots. I'm used to that,' said Coleman. Also, with elections around the corner, they're eager to see what the next mayor will put in place to prevent this from happening daily. 'Let's see what you're going to do about this situation? Because the city is behaving really badly. I don't see the police presence enough. They just drive by. I know you guys know, they have a drug house right here where they use drugs. I've got children who play on these streets,' said a St. Roch resident. Both of this morning's shootings are open investigations. The NOPD is in the process of gathering evidence and information to determine possible suspects and motives.
