Jorge Costa, Portuguese legend and captain of Porto in 2004 Champions League win, dies aged 53

Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, has died from a cardiac arrest, the club has said. He was 53.
Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death.
The club said in its announcement that Costa embodied Porto's values of "dedication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of conquest."
Portuguese media reported that Costa sustained cardiac arrest at the club's training centre and was transported to São João Hospital.
Costa's finest achievement in his playing career was as captain of Jose Mourinho's Porto team that was a surprise winner of the Champions League in 2004. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup.
Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro offered his condolences and praised Costa's "dedication and commitment" to both Porto and the national team.
An emotional Mourinho paid tribute to Costa during a press conference for his Turkish club, Fenerbahçe.
"He's part of my history," Mourinho said.
"You have captains. You have leaders … sometimes it's not about the armband at all. It's what they represent. And Jorge was one of these guys who cleaned the garbage and let his coach do his job as a coach and not as a leader of the dressing room.
"That's perfection as a coach, when your captain does this work. I'm very sad. He's part of my history, of course.
"But let's forget football. Let's focus on him. Jorge was a young guy with his kids. I am very sad, but I'm here now because he would tell me, 'C'mon, do your press conference'. And he would say, 'Play the game tomorrow. Win the game and forget about me'.
"That would be Jorge, so that is what I am trying to do. To play the game. To win the game and then cry after."
Costa spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001–02 season.
"To hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he's a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League-winning side," said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton's ex-players' association.
"He was loved at Charlton, a man mountain of a player and a great guy, too."

The coach left club HQ around 5:30pm AEST with the meeting completed around 7:30pm. Michael Voss leaves Ikon Park while the board meet. Picture: Glenn McFarlane It held extra stakes for Voss in the aftermath of Melbourne's sacking of Simon Goodwin. Part of the Demons' reasoning for axing their premiership coach on Tuesday was to get to market and ensure they can complete the hiring process before the off-season. And footy insiders believe the Blues could yet be pushed into making an early call on Voss, who's now viewed as the most under-pressure coach in the AFL. Seven's Mitch Cleary declared from Ikon Park on Wednesday evening Voss' future is 'well and truly on a knife's edge, despite holding a contract for next year'. Voss has a 44-42-1 record as Carlton coach but after 2023's miracle run to a preliminary final, the Blues have failed to record a September win despite premiership aspirations, and will not play finals in 2025. Goodwin presented to Melbourne's board at a meeting last week, which then decided to fire him a week later. And while it's been expected the Blues will wait to make a call until new chief executive Graham Wright takes over on August 15, the Demons' position in the market could force the club's hand. The club also has major decisions to make regarding football boss Brad Lloyd, whose future is uncertain, and their assistant coaching panel. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy defends decision to sack Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has defended his controversial decision to sack Ange Postecoglou despite the former Socceroos coach guiding Spurs to Europa League glory last season. Postecoglou was axed by Spurs in June, a little more than two weeks after Tottenham's 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United. The win secured Spurs their first piece of silverware in 17 years and a coveted spot in the UEFA Champions League. However, it wasn't enough to save Postecoglou's job, with Tottenham's poor 2024-25 English Premier League season the reason for his sacking. Spurs finished in 17th spot and lost 22 Premier League matches. 'We had to take the emotion out of it,' Levy told The Overlap this week. 'No one likes telling somebody 'you're losing your job', but it is the nature of football. 'We're there to win, and yes, we won a European trophy, and it was fantastic, but we also need to win on all fronts, and the Premier League says it all. 'We can't lose sight of the fact we finished 17th in the league. We lost 22 Premier League games, and it's impossible for Tottenham to be in that position.' Ange Postecoglou guided Spurs to Europa League glory but was sacked soon after. Picture:Levy said while it was a 'collective decision' to sack Postecoglou, the decision ultimately had to 'rest with me'. Postecoglou remains without a coaching job, while Levy appointed former Brentford boss Thomas Frank as Spurs' new manager in June. 'Thomas is a highly intelligent individual. He's got a fantastic way about him in terms of communication. He will be great at developing young players and older players and making them better,' Levy said. 'He gets the style of football we want to play. We haven't said to him 'you've got to win the league this year' … we just want to compete at the highest level.' Spurs will meet Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in next Thursday morning's UEFA Super Cup before starting their Premier League campaign on August 17 against Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
