Your views on what a successful season for Aberdeen looks like

BBC News11-07-2025
Following a Scottish Cup victory and qualification for European football last season, we asked for your views on what success would look like for Aberdeen this term. Here's what some of you said:Andy: Top-six, a cup final and European football beyond Christmas. I'd settle for that.Kevin: Playing good football and playing to win every game no matter who it is, belief is key, and a good performance in Europe.Paul: Third place and get within 15 points of the league winners, decent runs in the cups and European football, then that would be a successful season. A more balanced season would be good, especially tighter games against the Old Firm.Justin: A more balanced season and clear signs that we are picking up what the manager is putting down, another cup wouldn't go amiss either.Stephen: Realistically a comfortable top-three finish and at least the semi's in both the cups is the expectation. A good European run would also be a step forward. Real success would be winning a cup or splitting the Old Firm as we won't have the squad depth to actually win the league without significant investment.Kenny: A good run in Europe, hopefully to the knock out rounds or further. A cup final and a top-three finish in the league.John: Consistency with good results. Being tough to beat again. I'd like to see group stage Europa League with a couple good results there, obviously I'd like another cup, but top-three has to be the goal every season.Bruce: With group stage football in the first part of the season we just need to make sure we are in about the top-six going into the second half of the season. Then we can kick on and go after the top-four and Scottish cup.

Transfer news live: Arsenal and Spurs in Eze update, Newcastle identify Isak replacement, new club in for Chelsea cast-off

Liverpool still hope to make additions to their squad before the transfer window closes in September and have two big names on their list of potential signings with the Reds aiming to bring in Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace 's Marc Guehi. Neither move is particularly close with negotiations ongoing though Isak has stopped training with the Newcastle squad and is keen for the move. The Reds have had a £110m bid rejected for the striker and are considering a second bid having raised more funds by completing a £25m sale of Ben Doak to Bournemouth. Eberechi Eze 's potential move to Tottenham Hotspur is dominating the closing stretch of the summer transfer window, with Crystal Palace negotiating a suitable payment structure in a deal worth more than £55m but the Eagles are also looking to hold onto Guehi despite Liverpool's interest. Manchester United continue to endure frustration with their goalkeeper situation, and could rival Manchester City for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma having seemingly ended their pursuit of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba who looks set to remain with the Seagulls. Tottenham identify Monaco star as Savinho alternative Tottenham Hotspur have identified Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche as a new target due to the lofty asking price for Manchester City 's Savinho, writes Miguel Delaney. In addition to the pursuit of Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, Spurs have looked at the Brazilian winger, who was omitted from the City squad for the Premier League opener at Wolves last weekend, with the 21-year-old facing stiff competition this season to play every week under Pep Guardiola. City can also call on Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Oscar Bobb and Omar Marmoush to play out wide, though Savinho remains highly-rated by the club since joining from Troyes for £30.8m in 2024. And Akliouche has now emerged as a viable alternative, having impressed for the Ligue 1 giants last term with seven goals in all competitions and also registering in the first game of the season, a 3-1 win over Le Havre. Baleba has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer. "We are very much looking forward to Carlos being here for the season," Barber told Sky Sports News. "No intention whatsoever of seeing Carlos leave us. An important part of our squad and also of our starting eleven for most weeks in the season last year so we're looking forward to seeing what he can do this year. "We are very happy with Carlos and we are delighted that he'll be here for the season ahead." "It's a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss," the Irishman said. "As far as I know nothing else has happened today, definitely didn't yesterday, so as it was really. "I have no idea what the situation will be, I have been up here since yesterday so we will deal with that during the week. "Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later. "We're always looking and there's a clear plan at the club if a player leaves." Marcelo Bielsa's side lost 4-3 to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in a classic. In 2025, there was a superficial similarity in the fixture list, none whatsoever in the game but Leeds could savour an outcome they preferred. Everton were beaten 1-0 and, for the second time in the opening round of games, a promoted club tasted victory. Daniel Farke 's Leeds will never have the romance of Bielsa's but a prosaic win qualified as a 'really magic night' for a manager who entered his 50th Premier League game with just six wins to his name but who could claim the meagre resources at Norwich accounted for that record. The signing of Dango Ouattara, for a club record fee, was to replace Bryan Mbeumo after his move to Manchester United and the Bees want another forward before Wissa can leave. Sky Sports News also reported last week that Wissa's representatives were assured Brentford would engage with Newcastle if there was movement on forward reinforcements. Newcastle are not expected to offer above £40m who could play into things as well. 19 August 2025 12:25 Why has Bournemouth's new signing changed his name? Bournemouth's new signing Ben Gannon Doak arrived from Liverpool where he was registered as Ben Doak. The Scotland international wishes to be known as Gannon Doak to reflect both of his parents' names asked for the switch when signing his a five-year deal. Sky Sports reports that Gannon Doak is viewed as a replacement for Luis Sinisterra, who is set to join Brazilian side Cruzeiro on loan. Mike Jones19 August 2025 12:19 Spurs line up Savinho alternative Tottenham were interested in bringing Manchester City midfielder Savinho to the club this summer but it seems likely that the 21-year-old will remain at the Etihad. Spurs are now looking at Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche as an alternative. Akliouche is 23-years-old and scored five goals with 10 assists in 32 matches for Monaco last season. That being said, Liverpool could make a genuine claim to the crown with their summer business. Emery added: "We are being competitive in the transfer window. Since I arrived here, we have done fantastic windows, in January and the summer. We now have to be intelligent and alert in everything. "I think the most important is how we are building the team, trying to get as strong as possible with the players we have. "The club is working fantastic, and we are ambitious. Clubs must wait until October for confirmation of 2026 Super League status

Super League clubs must wait until five days after this season's Grand Final to confirm their status in next season's potentially restructured top flight. The current top 12 clubs voted last month to expand the competition to 14 from 2026, subject to enough applicants meeting tight financial and sustainability criteria. The top 12 will still be determined by existing IMG grading scores, with the possible additional clubs picked by a seven-strong panel of experts. Clubs – including those who face the prospect of dropping out of the existing top 12 in the IMG table – must express their intention to apply by next Wednesday, with the composition of next season's Super League announced on October 16. Crisis-hit Salford, who are battling to complete their season after forfeiting last week's game against Wakefield, are expected to drop out of contention, effectively leaving three top-flight places up for grabs. The PA news agency understands that Bradford Bulls, who last played in Super League in 2014, are in pole position to replace Salford in the 12th spot, leaving Toulouse, York and London as front-runners for the remaining places. The panel, which will consider criteria additional to those already set out by IMG, specifically relating to financial status and sustainability going forward, will be chaired by RFL non-executive director Lord Caine. Caine said: 'I am honoured to have been asked to chair the panel to determine whether the Betfred Super League expands from 12 to 14 in 2026 and, if so, which clubs will take up the 13th and 14th positions in the competition. 'This panel consists of individuals with the considerable knowledge and expertise necessary to ensure that the process is both thorough and robust. 'All of our proceedings will be conducted on the basis of absolute fairness, rigorous impartiality between the applicants, total independence and, of necessity, complete confidentiality.' The seven-strong panel will also include two fellow non-executive RFL directors Abi Ekoku and Dermot Power, RFL chief executive Tony Sutton, interim head of legal Graeme Sarjeant, RL Commercial managing director Rhodri Jones and Super League (Europe) board member Peter Hutton. The composition of next season's Championship and League One competitions – which are expected to merge – is set to be confirmed later this week.

Tommy Fury makes bombshell claim Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul could be FIXED and makes fight prediction

TOMMY FURY has sensationally claimed the proposed punch-up between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul could end up being RIGGED. Exploratory talks over a shock showdown between the former two-time unified heavyweight champion and the YouTube sensation have taken place. 5 5 5 The prospect of the pair, 35 and 28 respectively, sharing the ring has stunned fight fans and fighters alike. Former Paul opponent Fury is among those baffled by the potential crossover clash. He told The Stomping Ground: "Money's a very powerful thing in this world. "But if it goes past two minutes of the opening round, then I will take that in [as that] AJ's been paid off. "And I think it's going to take a lot of money to for that to happen. And if it does, I think it will be very, very upsetting for everybody. "But you can't rule it out. Because that's just where boxing is today." Fury - the younger brother of former WBC heavyweight king Tyson - got the better of Paul in their Saudi showdown in February 2023. And having shared the ring with The Problem Child, he's adamant he has no business trading heavy leather with London 2012 gold medallist AJ. 5 He said: "If I can beat Jake Paul, then excuse my French, but what the f**k is Anthony Joshua going to do to Jake Paul? "I think my dad said, 'AJ could beat him with his p***k.' And I completely will back that up. Frank Warren says Anthony Joshua faces a 'tough call' in decision to fight Jake Paul or Tyson Fury as star risks hurting his iconic legacy "Even if AJ had a broken arm in there, it still wouldn't go past a minute. "To be honest with you, as a safety aspect, there's no way that fight can go ahead if one of them is not paid off. "It's gonna take a lot of money, but AJ could be paid off to not throw a punch for eight rounds. I pray not, I pray not. "But at the end of the day, my God, how good does it make me look? "If he gets beat by Jake Paul, that automatically makes me two-time heavyweight champion of the world, doesn't it? "Because my God. There's no proper way; I've just got to laugh about it. "How are we even talking about this? He got his nut boxed off me a little over two years ago. "And now all of a sudden, he's talking about fighting Anthony Joshua. It's like, 'Come on. You can't be serious.' 5 It's gonna take a lot of money, but AJ could be paid off." Tommy Fury on Anthony Joshua fighting Jake Paul "You can't beat me and I'm not Anthony Joshua, am I?' It's just ludicrous, it really is. "But that is the sport of boxing as current times stand." Fury's comments could come back to bite him as Paul has grown sick and tired of people suggesting his fights are rigged. So much so that he's hired Elon Musk 's lawyer, Alex Spiro, to go after anyone who claims his fights are in any way fixed, of which there has been NO EVIDENCE. He wrote on X: "After years of letting it slide as just 'haters being haters', I have asked my team to vigorously go after anyone who makes up lies about my boxing career. "Expect to get served, you pigs.' Former unified heavyweight king AJ hasn't set foot inside the ring since his devastating fifth-round KO loss to Daniel Dubois last September.
