'King Gobal' kicks off his new book

KUALA LUMPUR: Football legend Datuk K. Rajagobal officially launched his own autobiography titled "Inilah Saya K. Rajagobal" today.
The memoir, which chronicles Rajagobal's chequered footballing life — its triumphs and tribulations — was launched at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair at the World Trade Centre.
The 68-year-old's epic three-decade journey through Malaysian football — both as a flamboyant winger for Selangor and successful national coach — offers inspiration to future generations of Malaysian footballers.
At the launch of his much-anticipated autobiography (written in Bahasa Malaysia), Rajagobal expressed his heartfelt gratitude to those in attendance, including Kumpulan Karangkraf co-adviser Datuk Nasir Hamzah, FA of Malaysia deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundram, and former national players Datuk Reduan Abdullah, Datuk Zainal Abidin Hassan, Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, K. Gurusamy and Razman Roslan.
"This book is not just about me as a coach, it's about sharing my experiences, my struggles — falling down and rising again. That's what I want to give to all Malaysians," said Rajagobal at the launch.
"I don't want to just highlight my achievements. I want to tell the younger generation that anyone — regardless of whether they're in sports — can succeed if they work hard, stay disciplined, and hold on to their dreams."
Affectionately called "The Blessed One" by his fans, Rajagobal hopes the book will motivate readers to persevere through life's challenges.
"Our journey is not always easy. There will be hardships and setbacks, but what matters is how we respond. Every time I fell, I got back up. I want to share that spirit. I hope this book becomes a source of inspiration, a reflection of the Malaysian soul," he said.
Rajagobal's coaching journey included stints with PKNS, Selangor, Kelantan, Sarawak and Brunei, but it was with the national teams — Harimau Muda, Malaysia Under-23s, and the senior side — that he cemented his legacy.
He guided the national team to a historic gold medal at the 2009 Laos Sea Games before delivering Malaysia's maiden AFF Championship title a year later — a landmark moment in the country's football history.
Rajagobal closed his speech with a humble acknowledgment of the collective effort behind his achievements.
"Without the players, I cannot succeed. Without the officials, I cannot succeed. That's why I want to thank everyone who has supported me," he said.

Brunei tempt Terengganu's Akhyar to spread his wings to Borneo team

PETALING JAYA: Winger Akhyar Rashid is on Brunei's radar ahead of their return to the Malaysian Super League in August. The 26-year-old, who joined Terengganu permanently earlier this year from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), has piqued the interest of Brunei, who are making a comeback in the domestic league after 17 years. 'Brunei are hoping to finalise the signing of Malaysian national team player Akhyar Rashid from Terengganu,' the club said in a statement. 'Akhyar signed a contract with JDT in 2018 before moving to Terengganu in 2024. Brunei are hoping to finalise the signing of the player for their debut season.' Brunei are currently still competing in the Singapore Premier League, but are building their squad to compete in Malaysia soon. If the signing goes through, Akhyar will be the second Malaysian player in the squad, following the addition of former Penang leftback Fairuz Zakaria. The club have also reeled in the services of Indonesian international Ramadhan Sananta. Akhyar has made 37 appearances for Terengganu since last year, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in all competitions, including the Asean Club Championship. Brunei are also in talks to sign Philippines national team defensive midfielder Christian Rontini, who currently plays in the Thai League with Nongbua Pitchaya. They are also going after 27-year-old Japanese striker Tomoyuki Doi, who has scored 38 goals for Geylang International in the Singapore Premier League.

Turning into bravehearts

On fire: Aaron Chia (left) and Soh Wooi Yik pose after their victory against Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae of South Korea at the Singapore Open. — AFP PETALING JAYA: It's a new era of consistency for men's doubles players Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik under coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. Yesterday, the former world champions Aaron-Wooi Yik fought bravely to slay formidable South Korean foes Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in the men's doubles final to lift their first Singapore Open title. There were anxious moments towards the end but the Malaysians did not crumble as they used to in the past, but instead, had the last laugh by outfoxing the All-England champions to bag the US$74,000 prize money. It was the Malaysians' third title and fourth final appearance this year. In fact, it was their third back-to-back final but they hardly showed any sign of lethargy at the Lion City but kept attacking the world No. 10 Won-ho-Seung-jae. And Aaron attributed their fine run to their growing confidence under Herry. 'We are glad and happy with our consistent show. 'One of the aspects that had made the difference for us is our new coach. We have to give him the credit,' said Aaron. 'He had polished our game play and is turning us to be more solid and consistent. 'And all these are helping us to feel more confident of ourselves and is leading us to play confidently.' Wooi Yik, who has shown a lot of improvement and seemed more calm under duress, said their trust in each other also played a key role. 'Our trust in each other and the match preparation made the difference in our game. It was close in the decider but Aaron calmed me down. We wanted a victory but fortunately, we didn't rush into it,' said Wooi Yik. Will they have enough fuel in the tank to give another good showing and stay unbeatable at the Indonesian Open starting tomorrow in Jakarta? Aaron and Wooi Yik do hope so. 'We still have much to improve, as long as we train hard and translate it into our game, the results will come,' added Wooi Yik. Meanwhile, Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn was on top of the world after beating Lu Guangzu of China 21-6, 21-10 in just 37 minutes to lift the men's singles title. The former world champion, currently ranked second behind Shi Yuqi of China in the world ranking, is set to become Thailand's first men's singles player to be ranked No. 1 in the world when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) publish the new list tomorrow.
