Venus Williams makes a winning return to action at the age of 45
She and fellow American Baptiste proved too strong for Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue as they triumphed 6-3 6-1 in a last-16 encounter that lasted 72 minutes.
Her comeback will continue as she takes on another American in Peyton Stearns in the first round of the singles. It is Williams' first appearances in a WTA Tour event since March 2024.
'It was great to come out here and see the energy,' Williams said on Sky Sports after the match. 'As we were walking out to the court, we knew this was going to be a match.
'Our opponents actually played very well. It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. It was inspiring to be out here. I love this game and still hitting it big.'
Williams joked she wished she could have partnered with Baptiste, the 23-year-old world number 50, years earlier rather than playing with her sister Serena.
She said: 'I think from the first point, I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way!'

Britain's Emma Raducanu scored an eye-catching win on her doubles debut alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Competing together for the first time, the duo fought back from an early deficit to beat fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova and Britain's Olivia Nicholls 2-6 7-6 (4) 11-9 in a decisive tie-break set.
It was a notable win for Raducanu and Rybakina against opponents who triumphed at the Berlin Open last month and also reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year.

British number one Katie Boulter fell at the first hurdle in the singles as she went out 3-6 4-6 to Greece's Maria Sakkari.
Boulter lost her opening service game in each set and was never able to regain the initiative.
Earlier, former men's singles champion Dan Evans enjoyed a triumphant return to the tournament as he came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs.
Evans, the veteran former British number one, triumphed in 2023 but opted not to defend his title last year as he focused on the Olympics.
The 35-year-old was awarded a wildcard to participate this time and took advantage as he overcame a slow start to beat the Belgian Bergs, the world number 52, 3-6 6-4 6-3.
Bergs looked to have resisted the fightback when he edged back ahead with a break in the final set but Evans powered back to secure victory by winning four successive games.
'I didn't just want to take the wildcard and lose,' Evans said on Sky Sports. 'I felt I needed to pay them back a bit and try to 'defend' my title, because I couldn't last year.
'It was great, really enjoyed it, but it was rally difficult. There wasn't much rhythm. He played very well and I was lucky to come through that.'

Ben Askren shared a tearful thank-you message on Tuesday, as the former UFC star was finally released from hospital after undergoing a successful double lung transplant. Askren, a former Olympic wrestler and MMA champion, retired from combat sports in 2021 at the age of 36. But this spring, at just 40, the American suddenly faced a complicated health issue. His wife, Amy, revealed that Askren was battling 'severe pneumonia', and a concerning episode eventually led to the ex-fighter having a double lung transplant. In early July, Askren addressed fans for the first time since his health scare began, appearing emotional in a video that showed how much weight and energy he had lost. ' I only died four times, where the ticker stopped for about 20 seconds,' he said at the time. Now, Askren has shared another tearful update, yet a more celebratory one. Having finally been released from hospital, Askren said in a social-media video on Tuesday: 'Day 59, I'm out! With my beautiful wife supportive. 'That was a long journey, and it's not over because I still can't really walk. I have to re-teach myself to do that among many other things. I guess I can make light of it because it was me and I don't really remember it. But Amy how close was I to dying?' Askren turned to his wife, who replied, 'Too close, a few times,' before Askren continued: 'I remember [that] I don't remember 35 days of this journey, but I think surgery was 24, 25 days ago. It was hard. It was hard.' Becoming tearful, Askren said: 'I've said this already in one of the videos, but the support you guys gave me – whether it was setting up a GoFundMe, whether it was helping my kids and wife get through it, I had friends come from all over the country just to hang out for a couple of days – it meant so much. It was so great to have all the support and all the love. 'Hopefully I'm not in this situation again for a really, really, really long time; I plan on living a while. So, thank you guys again for all of the positive support, all of the comments online, everything. It means so much, love you guys.' Askren went to the 2008 Olympics as a Team USA wrestler, before beginning an MMA career in which he won the Bellator and ONE welterweight titles and stayed unbeaten until his final two fights. His last three fights all took place in the UFC in 2019, as he submitted Robbie Lawler before suffering a record-setting five-second knockout by Jorge Masvidal and a submission by Demian Maia. Askren then boxed once, facing YouTuber Jake Paul in 2021 and falling to a first-round knockout. He has not competed in any combat sport since.

Tom Aspinall finally reveals opponent for first defence of UFC title
Tom Aspinall will make the first defence of his undisputed UFC heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane on October 25 in Abu Dhabi, the promotion has confirmed Tom Aspinall will defend his UFC heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane. Aspinall hasn't stepped into the ring since he defended his interim heavyweight belt against Curtis Blaydes last July in Manchester. After Jon Jones successfully defended the gold belt against Stipe Miocic last November, many speculated the American would face off against Aspinall in 2025. However, 'Bones' didn't publicly commit to fighting the Brit, leading fans to demand that the American be stripped of his title. Last month, Jones announced his retirement from the sport and Aspinall was officially promoted to undisputed champion. After months of anticipation, the 32 year old now has a fight and will take on Gane in the main event at UFC 321 on October 25 in Abu Dhabi - as confirmed by UFC boss Dana White. It's been a rollercoaster few years for Gane since he suffered his first professional defeat to Francis Ngannou back in 2022. The Frenchman bounced back in his next fight against Tai Tuivasa before falling short in his second title fight against Jones, reports All Out Fighting. The 35 year old then defeated Serghei Spivac in Paris back in September 2023. After taking a year-long break, the Frenchman returned to the cage last December, taking on Alexander Volkov. Gane emerged victorious, but the bout was overshadowed by controversy after many felt the Russian had done enough to win. Gane will be seeking to become world champion in his third attempt at the undisputed title. Whilst there were doubts surrounding the French heavyweight's previous outing, the same certainly cannot be said for Aspinall - who has been on a remarkable run in the UFC. Following a crushing injury in his initial bout with Blaydes, the Brit made his comeback after a year-long absence in 2023 and stopped Marcin Tybura. He subsequently captured the interim championship just months afterwards, defeating the formidable Sergei Pavlovich in barely over a minute. It has been more than a year since supporters have witnessed the Brit compete and he will be eager to compensate for the time lost. Despite declaring his retirement, Jones disclosed merely weeks afterwards that he has rejoined the testing programme and may be eyeing the victor ahead of his possible comeback next year. 'Bones' voiced his ambition to fight on the White House card next July, but White has dismissed the notion. During Saturday evening's UFC 318 post-fight press conference, White appeared to dash Jones' ambitions to feature on the historic fight card. "I can't risk putting him (Jones) in big positions, in a big spot and have something go wrong," said White. Especially the White House card." With Jones sidelined temporarily and Miocic having hung up his gloves, many are wondering if the UFC's heavyweight division has lost its spark, but Aspinall reckons the weight class remains as thrilling as ever. Speaking to All Out Fighting last month, he declared: "Every fight is different, so even if I have beaten somebody before, it is still exciting for me to fight in. It's heavyweight MMA, so, even though it might seem a bit stagnant, as soon as the guys get active again, it will be good!". White's Tuesday evening revelation about Aspinall wasn't the only bombshell the UFC chief dropped. The American also confirmed that Merab Dvalishvili will square off against Cory Sandhagen at UFC 320 on 4 October in Las Vegas. Additionally on the card, Alex Pereira will attempt to reclaim his light-heavyweight crown from Magomed Ankalaev, whilst a tantalising bout at 205lbs pits Khalil Rountree against Jiri Prochazka at the same event. When is Tom Aspinall vs Ciryl Gane? Aspinall's encounter with Gane is scheduled for October 25 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The duo's battle will top the UFC 321 pay-per-view bill. Alexander Volkov and Jailton Almeida will also feature at the event - apparently vying for the top heavyweight challenger position. A light-heavyweight clash between Aleksandar Rakic and Azamat Murzakanov has been confirmed, with Mitch Raposo set to face off against Azat Maksum. The remainder of the card will be revealed soon, with whispers suggesting that Islam Makhachev's super-fight with Jack Della Maddalena might be on the cards. Official start times for the fights will be announced nearer the time, but it's expected that the main event will kick off around 10pm BST.

Okaro became the first black British swimmer to compete in the pool at an Olympic Games at the age of just 17 in Paris last summer when she was part of the women's 4 x 100m freestyle relay team which reached the final. Now 18, she is heading for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore delighted to be inspiring other young swimmers. 'But it's just nice to know that I'm not in this alone as well because they don't just look up to me, but they encourage me and want to see me do well and I think that's also a big thing, just knowing that there are people behind me and people that I don't even know that just believe in me. 'That helps a lot with my confidence and being able to perform.' Asked if she was aware anecdotally of youngsters who had been encouraged by her rise to prominence, Okaro added: 'I've had a few messages before and I've been stopped a couple of times by little girls who are basically just telling me that they keep swimming because of me, which is really nice.' Okaro, who still trains with her twin sister Izabella, is scheduled to compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly in Singapore, although is yet to make a decision on whether to take part in all three after missing a week and a half of training while she sat her A-levels. Whatever happens at the World Championships, she will be heading for the United States later this year to continue her athletic and academic careers at the University of Texas, glad her exams are out of the way. She said: 'It's definitely made me feel more relaxed, 100 per cent, because little things like even homework or turning up to lessons and waking up at 7.30am for breakfast, stuff like that, I don't have to do that anymore so I can solely be focused on swimming. 'That's definitely something I've got in my locker now and it's just made it a lot easier for me.'
