‘Our Times' movie review: All hail women in this time-hopping romance

The Hindua day ago

Our Times is a Mexican romance-drama with a hint of sci-fi. The movie revolves around Nora, played by singer and regular Latin Grammy Awards host Lucero, who is shown to be the brains behind building a time machine along with her husband Hector, played by Benny Ibarra. Hector sees her as a loving partner, whereas the staff at the National Autonomous University of Mexico sees her more as Hector's assistant. They try for extra funds for their project, and invite the University's dean for a meal. The dean likes the dinner prepared by Nora, but doesn't pay heed to her scientific opinions.
After Nora realises how to make the time machine work, the physicist duo travel in time from 1966 to 2025, and face the wonders of the 21st century. The catch is to keep their scientific breakthrough hidden from the world. Nora and Hector learn about new technologies in 2025, try on the latest fashion and even experience wokeism while trying to figure out a way back to the present.
Hector finds it hard to adapt to a world full of women with equal rights whereas Nora enjoys the experiences and continues to project her brilliance. By travelling in time, one could imagine that the main character had a complete shift to a multicultural social development. The movie was shot in Mexico City and one can appreciate the production design depicting the city in the 1960s.
In 2025, Hector feels as though others see him as Nora's assistant and tries to prove his worth. At a conclave where Nora is the guest of honour on International Women's Day, he cuts into her speech with his 'mansplaining' inputs. His speech doesn't get an applause, but the audience are appalled by his opinions which come out as offensive to women.
When the plot is focused on feminism, it reflects the power of women in today's world, in stark contrast to the 60s. Nora finds her voice and is able to accept the progressive mindsets that validate women. She gets to know what patriarchy means and reexamines the old ways. She realises that gender roles have undergone a change and women are able to express themselves and be free. What happens to their character arc, was the most expected. The husband leaves Nora in the future and goes back in time to set her free. He writes a letter saying she is creating her own success and is destined for greater things. The movie ends on a different note though, after she lives a life full of achievements. Their wrinkled faces reminded me of the 90-year-old character in the film Kapoor & Sons, where Rishi Kapoor underwent extensive make-up and looked like someone whose face got swelled up due from a food allergy.
To call Our Times a sci-fi film wouldn't do justice to other sci-fi films, as the plot doesn't quite convince the audience. What the film lacks in screenplay, editing, scene continuity, chemistry as well as music, it makes up with its messaging.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix to re-negotiate Rs 130 crore Thug Life OTT deal after Kamal Haasan starrer's BO failure

Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR hit the big screens on June 5, 2025, but has failed to stand out at the box office. Now, the OTT giant Netflix is re-negotiating its post-theatrical streaming deal. In an exclusive report, we at Pinkvilla learned that Netflix is planning to negotiate a different deal for the movie's OTT release. The agreement is being reconsidered with a 20-25% drop from the previous quoted amount. Earlier, we had reported that the digital rights of the movie were sold to the OTT platform for a whopping Rs 130 crores. The huge number was quoted due to Haasan and Mani Ratnam reuniting after the iconic Nayakan, but it was met with negative reviews on release. Following the mixed reactions, the movie failed to attract audiences to the big screens, resulting in disappointing box office revenue. With Netflix re-negotiating the OTT deal, we'll have to wait and see where their conclusion will reach. There were also reports that the movie would be streamed after 4 weeks since theatrical release, as opposed to the earlier-mentioned eight weeks. Talking about the movie, Thug Life is a gangster actioner focusing on the story of a Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a crime boss based in New Delhi. Following a shootout, the man adopts a young boy named Amaran and raises him as his own. As his foster son grows up and becomes a formidable member of the mafia, the leadership dynamic changes. Now, with a dark animosity brewing between father and son, Sakthivel is dead set on revenge. Aside from the main cast, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and more in key roles. Moving ahead, Kamal Haasan is next set to appear in the tentatively titled KH237 with AnbArivu duo serving as the directors. On the other hand, STR is speculated to soon join hands with director Vetrimaaran for an action venture. He also has multiple films in the lineup.

‘Rana Naidu 2' series review: Venkatesh, Rana, Arjun Rampal lead an improved, even if not consistently smarter, season

When things take a dark turn in Rana Naidu season two, Rana (Rana Daggubati) tries to reassure his daughter Nitya (Afrah Sayed) that everything will be fine. She retorts that nothing will ever be the same. This exchange encapsulates the story's core, which follows the consequences of Rana's actions as a fixer in Mumbai, tasked with managing the scandals of celebrities. Written by Karan Anshuman and Ryan Soares, with dialogues by Vaibhav Vishal, the series is directed by Suparn S Varma, Karan Anshuman and Abhay Chopra. It traces Rana's attempts to protect his family while continuing his long-standing conflict with his father, Naga Naidu (Venkatesh Daggubati). Loosely adapted from the American series Ray Donovan, the first season drew criticism for making Venkatesh, a long-time favourite in Telugu family films, deliver frequent expletives for shock effect. The new season offers a more restrained portrayal. Venkatesh avoids most of the profanity, though others around him do not. Unlike the first season, which opened provocatively, this one begins with Venkatesh practising pranayama — the calm before the storm. Rana Naidu 2 is more personal. It no longer centres on Rana fixing problems for celebrities, but on whether he can resolve the turmoil threatening his own family. His relationship with his wife Naina (Surveen Chawla) is more strained than ever, while his son Ani (Madhav Dhingra) and daughter Nitya face their own uncertainties. The ambitions and entanglements of Rana's brothers — Tej (Sushant Singh) and Jaffa (Abhishek Banerjee) — further complicate matters. Meanwhile, Rana's shifting dynamics with his boss OB Mahajan (Rajesh Jais) and the Oberoi family (led by Rajat Kapoor) add to the tension. Rana Naidu 2 (Hindi, English) Directors: Suparn S Varma, Karan Anshuman and Abhay Chopra Cast: Venkatesh Daggubati, Rana Daggubati, Arjun Rampal, Surveen Chawla, Kriti Kharbanda Episodes: Eight, 35 to 55 minutes Streaming on: Netflix The face-offs between Venkatesh and Rana that enlivened the first season take a backseat here, except in the opening episode. One of them becomes a reluctant collaborator, joining forces only for a specific mission. In this episode, the real-life uncle-nephew dynamic plays out well, despite lines such as Venky introducing Rana as 'muscle ka dukaan' and the 'beast of Hyderabad'. The narrative remains centred on Rana's attempts to protect his family, rather than Naga's antics. A final high-stakes job triggers further chaos. Rana Naidu 2 also explores other dysfunctional families, along with a few relationships that offer some hope. A business tycoon clings to his empire, while his daughter pursues her own agenda. Her brother and husband are not passive observers. Kriti Kharbanda is a notable addition, portraying a morally ambiguous character with ease. The story introduces Rauf Mirza (Arjun Rampal), an underworld don initially operating from prison. Here too, family dynamics intersect with vote-bank politics and power struggles. Greed and power fuel shifting alliances and broken ties, as the story attempts to expose the futility of both. Across eight episodes ranging from 35 to 55 minutes, Rana Naidu 2 grows darker, with heightened action, though the transitions are not always seamless. A don's hold over a vote bank is initially outlined with precision, only to be sidelined and later revived for a convenient, subdued conclusion. The focus leans more towards personal relationships, loss and revenge than on the crime-politics nexus. Arjun Rampal brings manic energy to his role, maintaining menace even as the character weakens under familiar tropes. The constants amid the turmoil are Rana's trusted aides, played by Adithya Menon and Lauren Robinson, though their impact is less sharp than in the previous season. A subplot involving a rapper's ambition and bond with his mentor briefly surfaces, feeding into the larger themes of destruction and revenge. The weakest link remains the portrayal of romantic relationships. The subplot involving Jaffa's relationship is particularly problematic. What might ordinarily be dismissed or condemned as perverse is later developed into a sensitive story. The question remains whether this arc could have been introduced more thoughtfully. Abhishek Banerjee's performance, however, stands out. The performances anchor the series. Venkatesh may use fewer Hyderabadi Dakhni phrases this time — aside from the recurring baigan ke bataan — but lends his character depth, expressing a quiet yearning for reconciliation with his son. A brief scene also shows him performing the 'Venky asana', an Easter egg for Telugu audiences. Rana maintains a brooding intensity, using his gaze to convey threats to his loved ones. His character, however, risks becoming one-dimensional, with his presence utilised best in action sequences opposite Arjun Rampal. The adult couples in the story often act with the impulsiveness of teenagers as the prospect of a safe, happy family grows increasingly distant. The subplot involving Dino Morea merely highlights another impulsive relationship. As the story narrows into chases, betrayals, revenge and action sequences, the psychological tension diminishes. The action is staged in the style of mainstream cinema, shot skilfully by John Schmidt, with John Stewart Eduri's score enhancing the mood. There is scope for a third season, but it will require sharper writing.
