Saini launches girl-child incentives, startup aid for women
Saini introduced the Lado Sakhi Yojana, under which Anganwadi, ASHA, and ANM workers—called 'Lado Sakhis'—will receive an incentive of ₹1,000 on the birth of every girl child they support. These workers will also assist in the care of pregnant women, thereby strengthening the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign in the state. He also launched the Badhte Kadam Digital Bal Programme to help Anganwadi workers enhance early childhood education and care.
To promote women's economic participation, Saini announced that one ration depot in every block will be allocated to self-help groups (SHGs) led by women, creating employment and enhancing their involvement in local governance. He further stated that 50% of beneficiaries under the Haryana Startups Policy will be women. To cultivate interest in entrepreneurship among young girls, 10,000 do-it-yourself kits will be distributed to school students. A new scheme will also support women-led startups involved in traditional textiles, eco-friendly crafts, Ayurveda-based wellness, and local food products by providing financial assistance between ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh.
In collaboration with NITI Aayog, the state will launch the Mahila Udyamita Manch, offering women entrepreneurs mentorship from over 700 advisors, training, and access to funding, markets, and incubation. Saini also inaugurated 131 women cultural centres across the state for organising bhajans, dances, and other cultural events. He distributed ₹14.26 crore as revolving funds and investments to SHGs and honoured top-performing students and teachers at the Utkrishta Shiksha Puraskar Samaroh at Police DAV School in Ambala.
Saini also announced several infrastructure projects for Ambala, including ₹145 crore for expanding water supply, ₹40 crore for a water treatment plant in Sector 24, ₹60 crore for repairs along the SYL canal, a synthetic track at the Sector 10 stadium, a new block at Naggal PHC, and the proposed relocation of the city's motor market. He inaugurated and laid the foundation for nine projects worth ₹73 crore.
Later, at the Van Mahotsav in Yamunanagar, Saini said 18 crore saplings have been planted in Haryana since 2014. Drone-based geo-tagging will be used to monitor tree growth for five years. He highlighted the Pranavayu Devta scheme, which offers ₹3,000 annually for maintaining trees over 75 years old. He also promoted the Green Aravalli Action Plan, jointly developed with the Centre, to enhance forest cover and water conservation in the Aravalli and Shivalik hills.

'Free speech will suffer': Musk's X locks horns with UK over online safety laws
While X has taken steps to comply, such as introducing age verification systems, it expressed concerns about the law's broader implications. read more A 3D-printed miniature model of Elon Musk and the X logo are seen in this illustration taken January 23, 2025. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration The social media platform X, owned by US billionaire Elon Musk, has publicly criticised the UK's newly implemented Online Safety Act, warning that its broad regulations could pose a risk to free speech. The company issued a stark statement: 'Free speech will suffer. The Act's laudable intentions are at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach. Without a more balanced, collaborative approach, free speech will suffer.' New provisions of Online Safety Act The criticism follows the rollout of new provisions under the Online Safety Act, which took effect recently. A key requirement mandates that websites, including social media and adult content platforms, verify the age of users to shield children from explicit or violent material. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While X has taken steps to comply, such as introducing age verification systems, it expressed concerns about the law's broader implications. The platform cautioned that the threat of hefty financial penalties could push companies to over-censor content, stating, 'Many are now concerned that a plan ostensibly intended to keep children safe is at risk of seriously infringing on the public's right to free expression.' UK govt stands strong by legislation The UK government has stood by the legislation, stressing that non-compliant companies could face fines of up to £18 million or 10 per cent of their global turnover—a penalty that could reach £200 million for X. The UK's media regulator, Ofcom, has already launched investigations into dozens of websites failing to implement required safeguards and has reached out to US-based companies, including X, to remind them of their legal obligations. X also took issue with provisions allowing police to monitor social media for content deemed anti-immigrant, arguing that this 'oversteps the intended mission' of protecting children. The platform's concerns align with remarks from Elon Musk, who previously labelled the Online Safety Act as a 'suppression of the people.' Musk has also thrown his support behind a public petition calling for the law's repeal, which has garnered over 450,000 signatures. In response, Ofcom defended the regulations, clarifying that they do not mandate restricting legal content for adults. A spokesperson stated, 'They must carefully consider how they protect users' rights to freedom of expression while keeping people safe.'

TikTok hires former Israeli instructor Erica Mindel as hate speech policy chief amid rising antisemitism scrutiny
TikTok has appointed Erica Mindel , a self-described 'proud American Jew' and former Israeli military instructor, as its new Public Policy Manager for Hate Speech, a move that comes amid heightened scrutiny over the platform's handling of antisemitic and extremist content. TikTok has not issued an official comment on the appointment. Mindel assumed the full-time, New York-based role in July. She is tasked with shaping the company's hate speech policy, leading strategic initiatives, and serving as TikTok's internal and external expert on antisemitism , according to her LinkedIn profile and job description. Background in diplomacy and defense Live Events Before joining TikTok, Mindel worked as a contractor for the US State Department under former President Biden, advising Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. She also served as Assistant Director of Program Development at the American Jewish Committee (AJC), where she organized policy delegations to Israel involving US media, civic, religious, and academic leaders. Mindel holds degrees in Political Science from the University of Michigan and Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University. In a 2023 AJC video, Mindel recalled being raised in a conservative Jewish household and said her advocacy against antisemitism began during her first month of college, when she fought a pro-BDS resolution. She later made aliyah to Israel, where she served for over two years in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as an instructor in the Armored Corps. The decision to place a former Israeli soldier in charge of hate speech policy has sparked strong reactions online and across civil society. Supporters of the move, including the ADL and Jewish advocacy groups , view it as a timely and necessary step in countering online antisemitism. Critics, however, worry that the appointment could stoke bias in moderation practices, particularly concerning pro-Palestinian voices. TikTok's broader struggles TikTok has long faced criticism for its inconsistent enforcement of content moderation policies and its opaque algorithm, which critics say has amplified extremist, racist, and antisemitic messages. The platform, owned by China's ByteDance , is also contending with potential legislation in the US and Europe that could force stricter regulation of harmful content. In its defense, TikTok has repeatedly said it is committed to making the platform safe for all users and has invested in internal audits and partnerships with NGOs. Mindel's role is one of several new policy-focused hires as TikTok aims to rehabilitate its public image and avoid further government intervention. With antisemitism reportedly at record highs globally, TikTok's next moves will be closely watched. Mindel's challenge lies not only in refining hate speech policy, but also in walking a tightrope between protecting vulnerable communities and preserving freedom of expression in one of the world's most politically charged digital spaces.
