Mumbai: One person died and three others were injured in two separate tree and branch fall incidents at Sewri and Kurla East in the 24 hours from 8am on Wednesday.
Ranjan Nishad (27), a plumber, suffered injuries after a huge Gulmohar tree in a private compound got uprooted and fell on his scooter near Fatima School, Sewri Cross Road, around 8:30pm on Wednesday.
He passed away at KEM Hospital around 1:30am on Thursday. The condition of Nishad's relative, plumber K Balkrishna (33), who was riding pillion rider on the scooter, is said to be stable. Balkrishna, who suffered serious injuries to his left leg, is admitted to KEM Hospital.
In another incident, a branch fell on two pedestrians, injuring them, near Jaitvan Garden, Thakkar Bappa Colony Road, Kurla East, at 11:30pm on Wednesday.
The condition of the two is said to be stable.
F-South ward officials said Sewri's Angel Housing Society where the Gulmohar tree got fatally uprooted, had sought permission for trimming the tree, but they did not carry it out. The BMC's F-South ward has sought the opinion of the garden department on whether a notice could be issued to the society regarding the incident. It occurred when Nishad and Balkrishna were returning home to Nalasopara after completing a plumbing job at a BMC office in Cotton Green.
Balkrishna, in pain and facing the prospect of surgery, remains unaware that Nishad is dead.
"About 15 to 20 people helped us, and we were rushed to the hospital in a taxi," said Balkrishna, who makes about Rs 15,000 a month and will likely have to return to his village in UP until he recovers.
BMC superintendent gardens Jitendra Pardeshi did not respond to calls from TOI seeking a comment on the incident. A BMC's F-South ward and garden department official said, "We have sought the opinion of the garden department as to what action can be pursued against the society."

Mohali court rejects anticipatory bail of accused in Rs 32 lakh flat fraud case

The Mohali district court has delivered a significant ruling, with the court of the Additional Sessions Judge rejecting the anticipatory bail plea of accused Gurmeet Singh in a high-value property fraud case. The case was registered by the Kharar police under sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. According to the complainant, she wanted to buy a flat in Mohali for her daughter's better education. Her husband came in contact with Vijay Singh, Sanjeev Kumar, and Gursevak Singh, who later introduced him to Gurmeet Singh. The accused allegedly showed them flat no. 348-A in Sector 115, Gunjan Land Developers, and finalised the deal at Rs 32 lakh. The complainant paid the amount in instalments. However, when the time for registry came, the accused and his associates started making excuses. Later, it was discovered that the same flat had already been sold to another party. The public prosecutor argued in court that 'serious allegations are pending against the accused and custodial interrogation is necessary'. However, the defence counsel claimed that Gurmeet was innocent and ready to cooperate with the investigation. After hearing both sides, the court observed that the allegations were of a grave nature and, therefore, anticipatory bail could not be granted. Consequently, Gurmeet's bail plea was dismissed.

Woman suspects fraud in oil purchase, loses Rs 2.4L

Udupi: A woman running a cashew oil unit in Kundapur was allegedly cheated of over Rs 2.4 lakh after a man posing as a Yelahanka BSF purchasing officer placed an order for 30 tonnes of oil and collected money online under the pretext of generating a gate pass and security deposit. Complainant Veena, 56, said that in the first week of Aug, a person named Kunal Chaudhary called her and informed her that, on behalf of the Yelahanka BSF Purchaser's Office, they required 5 barrels (1 ton) of oil. The complainant told him that it was not possible to send just one ton and that if they needed five tons, she could send the oil in a tanker. The accused said he would speak to his superiors and inform her. Two days later, he called back and asked her to send 30 tons of oil. Accordingly, on Aug 14, about 30 tonnes of oil were filled in a tanker and dispatched to an address in Bengaluru. The accused then called again and said, "Tomorrow is Aug 15 – a holiday. The gate pass must be made online quickly; if it is not generated, the payment will be delayed by 2–3 days," and asked her to transfer Rs 5 to initiate the gate pass process. The complainant transferred Rs 5 from her son's bank account. She then received Rs 10 from the accused. After that, the accused called again and asked her to send a security deposit of Rs 2.5 lakh. As the complainant was in a meeting in Delhi, she immediately transferred a total of Rs 2,45,486. Suspecting foul play, she also called 1930 and lodged a complaint regarding the incident. Kota police station registered a case under Section 66(D) of the IT Act. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
