'Avatar: Fire and Ash' director James Cameron unveils FIRST LOOK at new Na'vi villain Varang; teases no 'black-and-white storytelling'
James Cameron
released a first-look glimpse for the rest of the fandom.
First Look
The makers on Sunday unveiled the first full look of the new villain of the Na'vi tribe - Varang, played by
Oona Chaplin
, the powerful leader of the mysterious Ash Clan.
Months ahead of the film's much-anticipated release on December 19, 2025, Empire magazine unveiled the first images of the new villain and her faction of the Na'vi who break away from the tribe's belief of harmony with nature.

The Ash Clan
According to the report, unlike the peaceful Omatikaya and Metkayina clans seen in previous films, the Ash Clan are warriors who wield human weapons, don skull-like war paint, and live amidst fire and destruction.
The magazine cover image features Varang amidst a fiery backdrop, seeming ordering her army to attach. With a bright red head gear, and paint adorning their face, along with minimal clothing, this design is a stark contrast from the traditional Na'vi characters we have seen so far.
Speaking to the portal, director James Cameron hinted at expanding the moral complexity of the Avatar saga, moving beyond the simplistic narrative.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer LEAKED: Internet Flooded With Netizens' Reactions To James Camerons Sci-Fi Epic
Los Angeles: The trailer for James Cameron's upcoming fantasy epic, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash', was leaked online shortly after it was exclusively screened in theatres. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney had attached the trailer specifically with 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' across cinema halls, only for the unauthorised visuals to make across social media platforms. Efforts are being made to cut down on the viral circulation of the 'Fire and Ash' trailer, with multiple copies now taken down from the internet. The same happened with Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' the trailer of which was released in theatres ahead of Jurassic Park Rebirth. Even though multiple videos of the Avatar sequel's trailer have been removed, fan reactions have already gained momentum. One of the fans wrote, "The trailer has some of the most beautiful footage I've seen all year, and I was struck by the real sense of doom and rage -- fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes, heroes terrified, huge aerial battles," as quoted by the outlet. One more added, "It started out as 'meh, more of the same' and ended with 'yup, another billion to James Cameron." The trailer will send viewers back to Pandora, further introducing two tribes, the Wind Traders and the Ash People clan. It also includes glimpses of Sam Worthington's Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana's Neytiri, and his Na'vi family, embroiled in an intense fight with the Ash People clan, stated The Hollywood Reporter. It also shows the return of Colonel Miles Quaritch. At one point, Sully warned Neytiri and said, "We cannot live like this," before being taken into captivity. Meet Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Be among the first to watch the trailer, exclusively in theaters this weekend with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. — Avatar (@officialavatar) July 21, 2025 The trailer leak came days after the makers unveiled the first look of 'Avatar: Fire and Ash, introducing the first look of Varang - a new antagonist. 'I don't worry about people's comments, as I have my own taste and views on beauty – I follow them strictly,' she said. Though several clinics have declined to treat her due to the health risks involved, Ivanova remains firm in her plans: even bigger lips, larger cheekbones, and more surgeries ahead, regardless of the cost.
