Sports Seriously
The New Orleans Saints, these days, seem to operate on a hope and a prayer.
With no clear path to contention and a salary cap situation that never seems to get better, the Saints are clinging to average rosters with the idea that they'll be anything but when the games kick off. That's a fine idea in the movies, but New Orleans is living the real-life consequences of holding on.
That becomes increasingly clear in the quarterback room.
The Super Bowl win at the end of the 2009 season feels like a distant memory, just like the glory days of the late 2010s. Drew Brees and Michael Thomas aren't walking through that door anytime soon, leaving the Saints as a team stuck in the middle.
They signed Derek Carr to lead the team in the post-Brees years, only to see a diminishing return on their investment.
Now for the first time since 2005, the Saints are operating with a coaching staff that doesn't have Sean Payton's direct influence. Fresh off drafting a quarterback, perhaps New Orleans is readying for a change of direction.
As the quarterback depth chart shows, it's much closer than it seems.

A shoulder injury for Carr could pave the way for his eventual departure from the bayou. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport previously reported that the injury "has put his availability for 2025 in doubt," and the quarterback was considering surgery to deal with the issue.
Until something happens, however, the 11-year veteran Carr is the engine that powers the Saints offense.
If New Orleans decides to break its four-year lease or Carr opts for surgery, they have a rookie quarterback waiting in the wings.
The Saints drafted Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, meaning it's only a matter of time before he gets the chance to start. Shough is a seasoned rookie who will turn 26 at the end of September and comes with a whopping seven years of college experience, having made stops at Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville.
New Orleans won't benefit much from letting him waste away on the bench given his age. That would allow Moore the opportunity to put his stamp on the team.
The remaining duo of Rattler and Haener are also holdovers from the previous Saints' regime. Neither of them figures to be in a position to start, and one of them will almost certainly be off the roster if Carr is able to play.
Rattler is in the better position of the two, but still posted an 0-6 record in his starts while tossing four touchdowns to five interceptions.

WWE's 'The Miz' suggests Chiefs star for American Gladiators, talks Browns fandom

WWE's 'The Miz' suggests Chiefs star for American Gladiators, talks Browns fandom This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Mike 'The Miz' Mizanin about his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 9-13 at Edgewood Tahoe, his earliest memory of the Cleveland Browns fandom, and hosting the upcoming American Gladiators reboot while name dropping Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce as an ideal Gladiator. The Kelce brothers are confirmed to be Miz's competition again this year, as he will seek a better finish than last year's tournament. Miz is an Ohio native and a die-hard Browns fan, having witnessed the franchise's ups and downs. Cleveland's last divisional round postseason appearance was against Kansas City in 2020, when they lost at Arrowhead Stadium 17-22. He recalled his earliest memory of the team as a child attending school, singing about their quarterback, Bernie Kosar. "I believe I was in, like, fifth grade, and I was going to school in the bus, and we were just singing, Bernie, Bernie, oh baby Super Bowl," said Miz, "So, yeah, I remember that verbatim, and I also remember us not making it to the Super Bowl. I believe that year was either the fumble or the drive. I'm not sure which one, but those are the two things that really screwed us." The former WWE champion was recently named host of the upcoming reboot of American Gladiators on Prime Video. "I can't wait. I think, with this show, we're gonna, you know, give a nod to what, what American Gladiators was in the past, and elevate it and put it, you know, with 100% and go literally, ball to the wall, if you will." said Miz, "I mean, American Gladiators is a staple, and now to be the host of American Gladiators. It's an absolute honor, and I take it very, very seriously. I want to make sure that this show is everything people imagine it to be and more, and it will be. I can't wait for people to meet the Gladiators. I can't wait for people to see the events, and I can't wait for people to see me as the host." During a recent appearance on NFL Network's Good Morning Football, Miz suggested that Chiefs star Travis Kelce would make a great addition to the show as a Gladiator. "I'm gonna go with two tight ends. I'm gonna go, George Kittle, I'm gonna go with Travis Kelce, because of personality," said Miz during the broadcast, "A Gladiator has to have a great personality, and got to be out there, not only do that be physically dominating but they got to be someone, either you're root for, or you're gonna boo kind of like a WWE superstar." The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC, along with a first-place prize of $150,000, makes the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.

Countdown to Kickoff: Vernon Broughton is the Saints Player of Day 91

Countdown to Kickoff: Vernon Broughton is the Saints Player of Day 91 Broughton is expected to upgrade the interior defense for New Orleans The New Orleans Saints start their 2025 regular season 91 days from today against the Arizona Cardinals. Currently wearing No. 91 for the Saints is one of several newcomers to the team, rookie defensive lineman Vernon Broughton. As our Saints Player of the Day, it's time to take a closer look at the rookie defender. Name (age): Vernon Broughton II (23) Vernon Broughton II (23) Hometown: Houston, Texas Houston, Texas Position: Defensive tackle Defensive tackle Height, weight: 6-foot-5, 311 pounds 6-foot-5, 311 pounds College: Texas Longhorns Texas Longhorns Relative Athletic Score: N/A N/A Drafted: Round 3, 71st overall in 2025 (New Orleans Saints) Round 3, 71st overall in 2025 (New Orleans Saints) NFL experience: Rookie Rookie 2025 salary cap hit: $1,206,872 A four-star recruit out of Cypress Ridge High School in Texas, Broughton elected to stay in-state over recruiting pitches from other national powers. After playing in just two games in 2020 as a freshman, he was a regular part of the defensive line rotation until becoming a starter last season. In his last four years with the Longhorns, Broughton totaled 6.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss among his 70 total stops. New Orleans targeted Broughton with their first of two choices in Round 3, the seventh pick in the round. He was the fifth defensive tackle taken off the board in Day 2. Outside of Bryan Bresee, a first round pick in 2023, Broughton is the highest drafted interior defender by the Saints since Sheldon Rankins in 2016. Broughton has an explosive first step off the snap and good athleticism for his size. He'll need to get stronger and show more consistency against the run, but plays with good leverage against double-teams and shows good lateral movement down the line of scrimmage. Broughton's frame and athleticism gives him some versatility as both an interior lineman or a big end in 3-man fronts. New Orleans ranked 30th in overall defense and a putrid 31st against the run and yards per rush. It's clear that the Saints and new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley wanted to get more skilled up front. They picked Vernon Broughton midway through Day 2 of this year's draft to hopefully help them do exactly that.

Two former Wisconsin Badgers land on PFF's list of the NFL's top guards for 2025

Two former Wisconsin Badgers land on PFF's list of the NFL's top guards for 2025 A pair of former Wisconsin Badgers appeared on ProFootballFocus' recent list of the NFL's top 32 guards entering the 2025 season. Detroit Lions right guard Kevin Zeitler, a three-year Badger from 2009-11, and Buffalo Bills left guard David Edwards, who represented the Badgers from 2015-18, earned designations on the outlet's 32-man hierarchy. Zeitler, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, landed at No. 9 on the list between Los Angeles Rams guard Kevin Dotson (No. 8) and San Francisco 49ers run-blocker Dominick Puni. The former Badger signed with the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2024 slate following his 2023 Pro Bowl campaign with the Baltimore Ravens. He's now entering his 14th professional campaign. In offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's scheme, Zeitler helped the Lions rush 534 times for 2,488 yards and 29 scores with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs starring in the backfield. Zeitler started at right guard in all 16 of his appearances. Despite being one of the older players at his position, Zeitler is about as effective as anyone not named Joe Thuney, Chris Lindstrom, or Quenton Nelson. Here's PFF's analysis: "Although Zeitler enters 2025 at age 35, he continues to prove he isn't slowing down. In his lone season in Detroit, Zeitler earned his highest PFF overall grade (86.5) in a decade, finishing as the NFL's third-highest-graded guard. While his pass protection dipped a bit in 2024, his 87.2 PFF run-blocking grade stands as the best of his career." Meanwhile, PFF ranked Edwards down at No. 29. The 2019 First-team All-Big Ten team member has played six professional seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. Shortly after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021, the lineman joined the Bills in 2023 as a backup before starting all 16 games during the 2024 campaign. With reigning MVP Josh Allen and dynamic rusher James Cook as primary ball-carriers, the Bills rushed for 2,230 yards and a league-best 32 touchdowns a season ago. Here's what PFF said about Edwards ahead of his third season in Buffalo: "2024 marked Edwards' first season in a starting role since 2021. He earned solid PFF overall grades, but really stood out as a zone blocker, recording a 78.1 PFF run-blocking grade on zone concepts — good for the 93rd percentile and the fifth-highest mark among qualifying guards." Zeitler's Lions will square off against the Packers on Sept. 7 to begin the season, while Edwards' Bills will play the Ravens the same day, beginning their quest for a second straight AFC Championship game appearance.
