Alcaraz clinches Cincinnati Open as Sinner retires due to Illness

Carlos Alcaraz won the Cincinnati Open title in a little more than 20 minutes after top-ranked Jannik Sinner was forced to retire because of illness during the first set. Meeting in the final for the fourth time this year and first since Wimbledon, Sinner fell behind 5-0 in the first set with nine unforced errors. He was seen with an icepack on his head during a break and retired after playing just 22 minutes. Didn't feel great from yesterday, Sinner said. Also during the night, I thought I would recover a bit better, but it was not the case. I just tried to go out for the fans, trying to give a match. But it was not meant to be for me today. It was only the third time the Cincinnati Open men's final ended in a retirement, and the first since 2011 when Novak Djokovic stopped playing in the second set because of a shoulder injury. Wanted to wish Jannik a speedy recovery and in a few days, hopefully he's going to be OK, Alcaraz said. For myself, I am really, really happy to lift the trophy. I lost the final here in 2023. I wanted really badly this trophy. Sinner, who turned 24 on Saturday, was on 12-match winning streak and had won 26 straight matches on hard courts. He was bidding to become the first player to win back-to-back men's Cincinnati Open titles since Roger Federer in 2014 and '15. Alcaraz, who is ranked No. 2, now holds a 9-5 advantage in his matchups with the Italian. Sinner won in four sets at Wimbledon while the Spaniard won a five-set thriller at the French Open and in straight sets in the Rome Masters in May. Another classic matchup wasn't to be on Monday. Sinner received medical attention after having his serve broken for the third time and retired moments later. After the third game, I just noticed that he wasn't feeling good, Alcaraz said. I know him. I've been battling against him, having great matches, great battles. I noticed he was missing more often. It's pretty weird from him. It was only the third time the top two men's players have met in the Cincinnati Open final, the last being No. 2 Djokovic and No. 1 Alcaraz in 2022 and No. 1 Roger Federer and No. 2 Djokovic in 2012. No. 3 Iga Swiatek faced No. 7 Jasmine Paolini in the women's final later Monday. The Cincinnati Open is considered a tuneup for the U.S. Open, which begins Sunday in New York. The last two years, both the men's and women's Cincinnati Open champions went on to win the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Carlos Alcaraz Claims Cincinnati Title After Jannick Sinner Retires Ill

Carlos Alcaraz won the Cincinnati Open after Jannik Sinner retired due to illness. Alcaraz, leading 5-0, secured his 22nd title. Sinner now focuses on the US Open It was a final that ended before it truly began. Carlos Alcaraz secured the Cincinnati Open title on Monday after world No.1 Jannik Sinner was forced to retire due to illness just 22 minutes into the championship match. The 22-year-old Spaniard was leading 5-0 in the first set when Sinner, visibly struggling in the 30°C heat, called for medical assistance and retired shortly after. While the anticlimactic finish left fans disappointed, it marked a triumphant moment for Alcaraz, who lifted his 22nd career trophy and extended his Masters 1000 winning streak to 17 consecutive matches. Ailing Sinner Withdraws in Painful Fashion Sinner later revealed he had been unwell since the previous day. Despite hopes of recovering in time for the final, he said he took the court only 'for the fans." 'I'm disappointed. I didn't feel great from yesterday," Sinner admitted. 'I thought I would recover better overnight, but it was not the case. I just tried to give everyone a match, but it was not meant to be." The Italian now turns his attention to the US Open starting Sunday, casting doubt over his scheduled participation in the tournament's revamped mixed doubles event set for Tuesday. 'The main focus is the US Open," he said. 'Recovery is the most important." Still, Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz in last month's Wimbledon final, stressed that his overall season has been 'incredible" and remains optimistic about his form heading into New York. For Alcaraz, the victory was bittersweet. 'Obviously it's not the way I wanted to win," he said. 'First of all, I wish Jannik a speedy recovery so he can be ready for the Open. But for myself, I'm very happy—I really wanted this trophy after losing the 2023 final here to Novak [Djokovic]." The Spaniard's return to form has been emphatic after last year's early Cincinnati exit. With this title, he improved his career head-to-head record against Sinner to 9-5, though the Italian still holds the upper hand from their Wimbledon clash. Alcaraz now looks ahead to Flushing Meadows, the site of his first Grand Slam triumph in 2022. 'New York is very special to me," he said. 'The energy, the support—it's where I won my first Slam. Last year was disappointing, but this year I feel great. I want to show my best tennis." With his 22nd career title and renewed confidence, the Spaniard will arrive at the US Open as one of the leading contenders, even as all eyes remain on Sinner's recovery. view comments Location : Cincinnati, USA First Published: August 19, 2025, 09:32 IST News sports Carlos Alcaraz Claims Cincinnati Title After Jannick Sinner Retires Ill Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
