Fortunately for the storied franchise, it appears that the 5-time All-NBA First Team selection and 26-year-old phenom plans to remain the centerpiece of the organization heading into the post-LeBron James era.
After the Lakers recently acquired former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft Deandre Ayton and 2022 Defensive Player of the Year winner Marcus Smart this offseason, reports surfaced that Dončić had a hand in recruiting the pair of talented complementary pieces, indicating that he is fully committed to winning in Los Angeles.
Dončić's offseason enthusiasm has been viewed as a positive sign by fans and NBA media members alike, and new updates have indicated that the Lakers can breathe a sigh of relief, as the likelihood of the generational guard inking a hefty contract extension with the franchise this summer continues to see exponential growth.
"There was ownership by Luka this offseason to stamp down that he wants to be part of the Lakers moving forward, and he wants others to join him," ESPN's Dave McMenamin shared during a Wednesday evening appearance on ESPN's NBA Today.
"So he makes calls to Deandre Ayton, the guy who came into the draft with him as the No. 1 pick, now he's the center for the Lakers."

"(Dončić) makes calls to Marcus Smart, needs to fill the point-of-attack defender spot that Dorian Finney-Smith occupied last year, he now plays for the Houston Rockets. (He) gets Marcus Smart to come."
"We look at that Aug. 2 date when the Lakers can offer an extension to Luka Dončić worth four years, $222 million, up to that figure. I would say if you're a Laker fan, you shouldn't have any worry about Luka coming to some sort of an extension agreement."
Following the league-shattering trade that swapped Dončić for 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis on Feb. 2, the Slovenian superstar contributed 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists while knocking down 37.9% of his 9.6 three-point attempts in 28 regular-season contests with the Lakers to close the 2024-25 campaign.
Los Angeles would then fall in disappointing fashion in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games, but the Lakers have already begun to look forward to a future with Dončić at the helm.
The one-of-a-kind offensive talent will have the option of inking a deal for three or four years, but it looks as though the Lakers could be afforded a semblance of security regardless of the contract's structure.

He set a career high of 20.5 sacks in 2018 and put together a career of 111.0 sacks through those 10 seasons. Donald also secured three Defensive Player of the Year nods, 10 Pro Bowl nods, and eight First-team All-Pro nods. He should be an easy first-ballot Hall of Famer as well. It would be more plausible that he would instead want to come over and help to coach the defense to some degree. Either way, the Rams getting a visit from their former defensive legend was sure to fire up the team. The Rams surprised everyone in 2024 when they were viewed as a "rebuilding" team. Despite the rough start of 1-4, the team would rifle off a 5-1 record in the final six games of the regular season. Matthew Stafford played a wonderful season despite also having to deal with a severely injured offensive line. The Rams would make it to the postseason and handily beat the then-red-hot Minnesota Vikings in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Sadly, Los Angeles' postseason berth was cut short when they lost in the Divisional Round to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Things are looking up for the Rams, and the team was able to land star wide receiver Davante Adams in free agency. Also, Jared Verse is one of the most dynamic defensive players in the league and has been spending time with Donald. Raiders lose Lonnie Johnson to broken fibula
Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. suffered a serious injury on Saturday. Johnson has a broken fibula and will get an MRI to determine whether he has further damage, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The injury happened at the Raiders' mock game practice at Allegiant Stadium, which was conducted at a somewhat higher intensity than a typical training camp practice. Johnson and Maxx Crosby collided while attempting to tackle running back Raheem Mostert, and Johnson was in obvious immediate pain. Raiders coach Pete Carroll referred to Johnson's injury as "significant." Johnson signed with the Raiders at the start of free agency after playing last season with the Panthers. He was expected to make the roster to provide depth in the secondary and contribute on special teams.

Moments after Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr laid on the field Saturday afternoon during the team's mock game, it was clear his injury was serious. After the game, head coach Pete Carroll said the injury was "significant", The question was simply what kind of significant injury was it and what it would mean for his 2025 season and beyond. The MRI results are in and it's a broken fibula for Johnson, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. This is not great news, but it could have been a lot worse. There were undoubtedly plenty of fears of an injury that was season-ending. Typically the recovery time for a broken fibula is about two months. And we are still over a month from the start of the season, which means there's a possibility Johnson could only miss 4-5 games. Still, Johnson had just spoken to the media the day before the game and was very excited about the opportunity he had in Las Vegas to get his career back on track. He was slated to be a starter and rotational safety along with Isaiah Pola-Mao and Jeremy Chinn. "With me playing my role on different teams and starting, and then having to go to straight special teams for three years straight, and now I've got an opportunity to go earn a better contract for myself this year," Johnson said of his career struggle. "I think Pete [Carroll] has been trying to chase me for so long, and he finally got an opportunity to, like, put his hands on my game. So, everything is just complementing, and like I said, I get a chance to just earn it and prove that I'm their guy. I never really had the opportunity to show a team. I've always been, 'Hey, he's a role player.' I've got an opportunity to show like I'm Pete's guy, I'm M-Rob's guy, I'm Spytek's guy, so that's what I'm here to do." This will be one more hurdle the seven-year vet will have to clear in his efforts to find a long term NFL home.
