News186 days ago
New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) A Mumbai-bound Air India Express plane, with around 160 passengers onboard, aborted takeoff due to a technical snag at the Delhi airport on Wednesday evening, according to a source.
An Air India Express spokesperson said the crew of the airline's one of the flights from Delhi elected to reject takeoff, prioritising safety following a minor technical issue.
A source said the pilot decided to abort takeoff as there was a glitch with the screens displaying the speed parameters in the cockpit. The flight was to be operated with an A320 aircraft.
Passengers were deboarded and accommodated in an alternative aircraft that had departed for Mumbai, the spokesperson said on Thursday.
The spokesperson regretted the inconvenience while reiterating that safety remains paramount.

Amarnath Yatra suspended as heavy rain lashes Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir's divisional commissioners on Wednesday suspended the Amarnath Yatra on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes as a precautionary measure after continuous heavy rainfall over the area. The annual pilgrimage was also halted earlier on July 17, due to similar weather disturbances.(PTI) 'Due to the heavy rains in the Yatra area, the movement of pilgrims from Base camps has been affected. Therefore, it has been decided that no convoy movement shall be allowed towards the base camps Baltal and Nunwan from Bhagwati Nagar Jammu on 31st July, 2025,' said the divisional commissioner of Jammu, Ramesh Kumar. Pilgrims would be kept informed about the situation and related updates, Kumar added. The divisional commissioner of Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri also informed that due to heavy continuous rains since early morning on July 30, the pilgrimage has not been allowed on the tracks from both the base camps Baltal and Chandanwari. The Jammu and Kashmir department of information and public relations (DIPR) also took to X to announce the suspension. Before the warning was issued, the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage continued from Jammu amid heavy rains as another batch of more than 1,300 pilgrims left on Wednesday for the twin base camps in the south Kashmir Himalayas. The Amarnath Yatra resumed earlier this month and is scheduled to conclude on August 9, coinciding with the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan. The annual pilgrimage was also halted earlier on July 17, due to similar weather disturbances. It commenced this year on July 3, and nearly 4 lakh pilgrims have so far visited the cave shrine, said the DIPR. Located in South Kashmir, at an altitude of approximately 3,888 metres, the sacred shrine is flocked by devotees every year. Pilgrims travel to the shrine through either of the two routes, the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on July 27 flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the Budha Amarnath Yatra from Jammu, officially starting the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Lord Shiva in the region, reported news agency ANI. 'More than a thousand people have just set out for the Budha Amarnath Yatra. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has made excellent arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra,' said Sinha as he spoke at the flag-off event. (With inputs from HT correspondents and ANI)

Bagdogra: AAI Begins Work On Climate-Resilient Terminal At The Airport, Know More

Last Updated: Bagdogra's terminal is part of India's larger push to improve airports in strategic but under-served regions. Bagdogra Airport, located at the base of the Himalayas, is the main air link to popular tourist spots like Darjeeling, Gangtok, and Kalimpong. With air traffic increasing every year, the Airports Authority of India has launched a massive upgrade to build a modern terminal that can handle 1,000 passengers every hour. Spread over 1.2 million square feet, the new terminal is being developed by CP Kukreja Architects. It aims to boost both domestic and international connectivity in this crucial region. How Will This Terminal Be Different? The new terminal is designed with climate resilience at its heart. Since the region is prone to flooding, the construction includes stormwater systems, culverts, and drainage channels to keep the terminal safe throughout the year. The terminal will also be a net-zero carbon facility, using passive cooling, energy-saving glass, and renewable energy sources to lower its carbon footprint. 'This project is more than infrastructure-it's a powerful demonstration of how architecture can respond to both context and climate," said Ar. Dikshu C. Kukreja, Managing Principal, CP Kukreja Architects. 'Our vision for Bagdogra Airport combines performance with poetry-drawing from the Eastern Himalayan landscape and embedding sustainability at every level." The design beautifully mirrors the local landscape. The terminal's aluminium fins and pitched roofs are inspired by Darjeeling's tea gardens and the outline of Mount Kangchenjunga. These touches not only look stunning but also help regulate the building's temperature naturally. Inside, passengers will enjoy large, open spaces with natural ventilation, easy navigation, and warm, locally inspired interiors that offer both comfort and style. Why Does This Project Matter? Bagdogra's new terminal is more than just an upgrade. It's a vision for the future—where aviation meets sustainability, and design respects both culture and climate. view comments First Published: July 30, 2025, 13:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tsunami hits Hawaii: Traffic gridlock as residents evacuate low-lying areas; flights diverted

Hawaii and parts of the US West Coast are placed on high alert after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29(local time), triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Authorities in Hawaii have urged residents and tourists to evacuate low-lying coastal areas and move to higher ground as waves up to 10 feet were expected. 'You can expect a tsunami wave to hit the state, and it will not just hit one beach,' Hawaii Governor Josh Green said at a press conference. 'It will wrap around the islands', reported USA Today. City's 911 emergency system has been overwhelmed with calls, as capital Honolulu faces gridlock amid mass evacuations. Officials have urged the public to avoid calling 911 unless it's a life-threatening emergency. Several Hawaii-bound flights have been diverted mid-air. Delta Air Lines Flight 311 to Kailua-Kona returned to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after spending nearly four hours in the air. Tsunami warning also extended to Alaska's coastal regions, from Samalga Pass to Attu in the Aleutian Islands, and remained in place for Hawaii. US President Donald Trump also issued a cautionary message on X, urging people to stay informed. 'Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!' National Weather Service Los Angeles said that tsunami waves are expected around 1am local time. In a social media update, the NWS said, 'If you are located in the coastal area, move off the beach & out of harbors & marinas. Do not go to the coast to watch. Be alert to instructions from local EM officials.'
