Frank Bruno health update after mid-air emergency saw him fall ‘seriously ill' on flight & spend weeks in hospital

The Sun23-04-2025

FRANK Bruno has made a 'dramatic' recovery after being struck down on a flight to the Far East and spending weeks in hospital.
Boxing legend Bruno plans to attend the Conor Benn v Chris Eubank Jnr bout in London this weekend - and return to his national speaking tour next month.

It comes after we told how ex-World Heavyweight champ Bruno, 63, was rushed to the hospital in Qatar after falling ill on a long-haul flight on March 3.
He was treated by medics in the country's capital, Doha, for several weeks after the mid-air drama as he travelled to Thailand.
Doctors diagnosed him with a viral infection and did not allow Bruno, whose PA, Paul Hunter, stayed by his side, to leave the hospital.
National treasure Bruno was feared to have contracted meningitis at one point, and was also treated when he returned to the UK.
The star was too ill to pick up a Lifetime Achievement gong at the British Boxing awards at the end of March, but plans to make public appearances from next month.
A source said: 'Frank was in a bad way for a long time and people were worried - but is now thankfully fighting back to fitness.
"His recovery has been as dramatic as his illness, and he is looking forward to the fight on Saturday.
"He is well enough to be ringside and will doubtless chat to fans at the event.
"Frank really wanted to be there and obviously knows both Benn and Eubank's fathers as well as the fighters themselves.
"He has spent Easter with family and friends and thankfully is now on the mend.

"Frank is looking forward to getting back out and about and is really grateful to his fans and the public for their support.'
Dad of four, Bruno has been sent thousands of 'get well' cards by the public since we told you last month of his mid-air health battle.
In a recent social media post, he said: "I am getting better and have been told to convalesce for a few weeks.
"Thank you for all your messages, I now have enough for two new chapters of a book - the last month has been eventful!"
After he fell ill on March 3, Bruno was treated on the Qatar Airways flight, then by airport medics after landing in Doha.
He was then whisked 10 miles to the Al Wakra Hospital, where baffled medics eventually diagnosed a viral infection.
Bruno has not cleared passport control so could not leave, and stayed in the hospital in the Middle East for two weeks, before flying home and continuing his recovery in the UK.
The star had been due to talk at four events in Thailand but suffered "fever-like" symptoms on the connecting flight to Doha.
As he boarded the plane at Heathrow, he had posted a picture of himself in his seat, smiling and with sunglasses perched on his head.
But he fell seriously ill soon after take-off.
Bruno is now set to make a private appearance at an event on Wednesday, May 7, before public appearances three days later in Norfolk and on May 17 in Bradford.
His national speaking tour marks the 30th anniversary of Bruno's WBC heavyweight triumph over Oliver McCall at Wembley in 1995.
Our source added: "In typical Frank fashion, he was worried about letting fans down in Thailand - but that should not happen with his UK events."
30YRS ON FROM EPIC WORLD WIN
By Michael Hamilton
FRANK Bruno's planned UK tour this year will celebrate 30 years since his greatest achievement — beating Oliver McCall to land the WBC heavyweight title.
He outpointed the American in front of a frenzied Wembley crowd in September 1995 — landing the world crown on his fourth attempt.
Londoner Frank had made his professional debut in 1982 and became a fan favourite, winning 21 consecutive bouts by KO.
He also enjoyed a long-standing TV double act with BBC boxing presenter Harry Carpenter.
He popped up on TV shows, Comic Relief appeals and appeared in pantos, with the nation loving his 'Know what I mean, 'Arry?' catchphrase.
His first world title loss came against Tim Witherspoon in 1986, before defeats to Mike Tyson in 1989 and Lennox Lewis in 1993.
After beating McCall, his first defence was against Tyson, who stopped him in round three.
Bruno suffered eye damage in the 1996 fight and retired — with a career record of 40 wins from 45 bouts, 38 by knockout.
The star has been open about his battles with mental health since quitting.
He helps others via his charity The Frank Bruno Foundation, and his book 60 Years a Fighter was published to mark his birthday in 2021.
The Sun was invited to the landmark bash, with tributes from stars including Tyson, Stephen Fry and Ricky Hatton.

Tottenham star reacts to Frank rumours after 'strange' Postecoglou sacking

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven says he found Ange Postecoglou's dismissal 'strange' given the Australian proved his 'winning mentality' by ending the club's 17-year wait for a trophy. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided to bring Postecoglou's tenure to an abrupt halt last Friday, just 16 days after the north London outfit edged out Manchester United in an all-English Europa League final. The scrappy 1-0 victory secured Tottenham a place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2022/23 campaign and Postecoglou would no doubt have been looking forward to leading his side into Europe's premier competition next season. But Spurs' woeful domestic campaign – their worst-ever in the Premier League – ultimately cost Postecoglou his job and the search is ramping up for his successor. Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has emerged as the overwhelming favourite to take over the reins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Spurs' talks with Brentford are progressing at a pace. It's understood Tottenham will have to pay a compensation fee of £10million to get a deal over the line for Frank. Asked for his thoughts on Postecoglou's sacking after the Netherlands' 8-0 thrashing of Malta, Van de Van told Voetbal Zone: 'That was ultimately a choice from the club. 'We, as players, have little to say about that. Of course, he is the first coach in a long time who has won a trophy has had success at Spurs. So if you look at it that way, it is of course a strange choice. 'It is a choice from the club about which we have little to say, so we will see what happens now.' Van de Ven admits it looks likely that Frank will be named as Postecoglou's replacement in due course. 'Of course, we see some rumours about the Brentford head coach, who it will probably be,' he added. 'So yes, a choice from the club about which we have little to say.' The Dutch centre-back believes Tottenham players must accept much of the responsibility for their 17th-placed finish which led to Postecoglou being fired. 'I think many of the players got along with him well and, of course, what I say is that he is the first coach who has brought success to Spurs in a long time,' he continued. 'That also shows that he has a certain quality. It also means that he has a winning mentality, 100 per cent. More Trending 'From that, you would of course say that it is strange that he was fired. 'What we have shown in the Premier League is, of course, unacceptable. That would, of course, have been a factor, but that was not only down to the coach.' The leading candidate to replace Postecoglou, Frank, is said to be eager to push through a switch to north London and has reportedly told the club to make Bryan Mbeumo their first summer signing. But Mbeumo is also attracting strong interest from Manchester United this summer, with the Red Devils lodging a second offer worth more than £60m for the Cameroon forward in recent days. Oleksandr Usyk makes retirement admission before Daniel Dubois fight

The Ukrainian has not fought since beating Tyson Fury for a second time last September and is set to return to the ring next month against Dubois Oleksandr Usyk has admitted he thinks about retirement but is targeting a stadium fight in his beloved Ukraine before hanging up the gloves for good. It is fair to say that the heavyweight star is is edging closer to the end of his career as he prepares to take on Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley Stadium. Usyk - who holds the WBA, WBO and WBC belts - will put them on the line against 'Triple D' - the IBF champion - in the first ever four-belt heavyweight unification on British soil. ‌ The pair have already met before when Usyk went on to stop Dubois in the ninth round back in 2023. However, the fight was not without drama. Just before the midway point, the Ukrainian was sent crashing to the canvas due to a shot to the body. That said, it was later deemed a low blow - much to the frustration of Dubois. ‌ With just over a month to go until the contest, Usyk is currently preparing over in Spain. While he is giving it his all in training, the 38-year-old is thinking about life after boxing. He told The Ring: 'I don't think about retirement much but I do think about it sometimes. I cannot say now how many fights I've got left. 'Right now, my dream continues but I'm very grateful for my family and my team who are with me… But I still want to fight at the Olympic stadium in Kyiv. Now I have no idea who that would be against.' Next month's fight will be his first fight at Wembley Stadium. The 38-year-old admits it was always a dream of his to fight in a big stadium like Wembley. 'When I was young or at the start of my career I used to dream about boxing in a big stadium like Wembley or Tottenham,' he added. 'Now it's real. I boxed in a big stadium against Anthony Joshua and it was great, a big fight. But I don't visualise the fight now. My focus is just training, my rest. I'm not visualising the fight because when I go to London, when I step in the ring, OK I'll start. Now there's no need for it.' On the topic of the low blow incident two years ago, the Ukrainian is adamant that it was a 'dirty punch,' but is now solely focused on the task at hand on July 19. 'It doesn't frustrate me because I think it's rubbish,' he said. 'It's trash talk, it's rubbish. For me it doesn't matter because I know it was a dirty punch - now for me it's in the past. I live today in the present.' Ahead of the rematch, the two teams have already come to blows after Dubois' trainer Don Charles sensationally questioned Usyk's faith in God after accusing him of 'conning the boxing world' during the pair's 2023 bout in Poland. 'The actions you did that night, you've heard of the Oscars? You should've won an Oscar,' Charles told a press conference in April. 'You conned the referee, you conned us and you conned the boxing world. You pride yourself as a God-fearing man – 'Thou shalt not lie' – so I question what kind of God do you worship? The God has summoned you for our son Daniel Dubois to get revenge on you.'

Thomas Frank's dream Tottenham XI with Man Utd's top target leading 3 signings

Thomas Frank could see some new signings at Totteham when he is appointed Spurs' successor to Ange Postecoglou, including a Brentford star and another Manchester United target Tottenham are on course to have a deal wrapped up for Brentford's Thomas Frank. The Danish coach is set to be the man to succeed Europa League-winning boss Ange Postcoglou in north London but the changes aren't likely to stop there. Frank is a coach rather than a manger and will be tasked with improving the squad at his disposal. But after the Lilywhites finished in 17th position, the 51-year-old will rarely have a stronger position to negotiate from over what he requires in the transfer market. ‌ There will be key decisions to make over a number of players with the future of captain Son Heung-min a hot topic. But Tottenham technical director Johan Lange will be the figure heading up much of the recruitment, possibly alongside a returning Fabio Paratici. ‌ With a return to Champions League football to manage in addition to the battles of the Premier League, the pressure will be on Frank to deliver on both fronts. And perhaps a new player or two can help boost Spurs' numbers and quality ahead of a better season. Mirror Football takes a look at how Spurs could line up under Frank next term. Guglielmo Vicario is set to remain the club's No.1 with the likes of January signing Antonin Kinsky to provide back-up. Goalkeepers Fraser Forster, 37, and Alfie Whiteman, 26, are both set to be released at the expiry of their contracts. The Spurs backline will see Kevin Danso make his loan move permanent this summer after arriving amidst the club's injury nightmare midway through the season. Already there is some competition with talented stars such as Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin at Frank's disposal. With Dragusin still recovering from an ACL injury and Romero being linked to a possible exit for Atletico Madrid, perhaps there is room for another however. Spurs have already been linked to Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, AS Roma defender Evan Ndicka and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. ‌ If Spurs can take advantage of Guehi entering the final year of his contract with the Eagles, perhaps he his most likely to slip into a backline including Pedro Porro, Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie. In midfield Frank will have talented youngsters to choose from in Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr, while only one of older options Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur is likely to extend their stay via a new contract. The latter could help provide a base alongside Sarr if Spurs plan to stick with the players they have. Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze have both drawn interest from Tottenham but could prove difficult to prise away from Selhurst Park ahead of Oliver Glasner's side heading into Europe and being notoriously tough negotiators. With James Maddison already in the squad, Frank has an option to play in an advanced role and Dejan Kulusevski could also thrive in such a position. ‌ Across Spurs' frontline a familiar face could arrive in the form of Bryan Mbeumo to provide plenty of goalscoring threat from the right side. Frank is said to have asked for the Cameroon international to follow him from Brentford. On the opposite flank could be Son Heung-min but after securing his place as a Spurs legend by virtue of finally winning a trophy, he could find new competition. Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo is of interest to Tottenham and would appear to fit in with Frank's philosophies. ‌ Up front, Dominic Solanke is the obvious option to lead the frontline. Son could provide some support in that position throughout the season, in addition to Richarlison but Solanke will be handed the responsibility. Dream Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Guehi, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Sarr; Mbeumo, Kulusevski, Semenyo; Solanke.
