Xiaomi 16 grabs a certification on its way to launch

GSM Arena08-07-2025
The Xiaomi 16 has been rumored to launch in China by the end of September, right after Qualcomm unveils the chipset that will be powering it. The phone has now received the EEC certification, ahead of its global launch.
It's unclear when that will take place - its predecessor was introduced to international markets this February at MWC, but if the Xiaomi 16 launches in China in September, waiting five months for it to make its global debut is stretching things quite a lot, so perhaps Xiaomi will change things this time around - it remains to be seen.
The certification reveals the Xiaomi 16's model number for global markets, which is 25113PN0EG. The Chinese model will have a "C" at the end instead of the "G", while the Indian model - you guessed it - will end in "I".
According to previous rumors and leaks, the Xiaomi 16 will have a massive 7,000 mAh battery, a 6.3" to 6.39" flat OLED display, and three 50 MP cameras on the rear (including a main with a 1/1.3" type sensor and a periscope telephoto). Xiaomi 15

Does this huge $16.5 billion order mark the start of a turnaround at Samsung Foundry?

Samsung's beleaguered foundry unit made a surprise announcement in South Korea Monday morning local time. The foundry announced that it would supply automobile manufacturer Tesla with chips until 2033. The transaction is valued at $16.5 billion and is huge for Samsung Foundry, which has been a distant second to TSMC in the business of contract chip manufacturing. Samsung Foundry's yields have been well below TSMC's. This measures the percentage of dies cut from a silicon wafer that pass quality control (QC), divided by the maximum number of usable dies that the wafer could have produced. A low percentage means that not enough good chips are being manufactured, and that results in higher prices for the chips that can be used. The yield issue has cost Samsung Foundry business from big-name chip designers such as Qualcomm. TSMC had a leading 67.6% share of the contract chip manufacturing business in Q1. Samsung Foundry was second with a 7.7% share. The deal with Tesla could help generate more business for Samsung Foundry. Finding new clients and keeping current ones has been difficult for the Samsung unit. Kiwoom Securities analyst Pak Yuak says the deal will reduce the red ink that Samsung's foundry business has been spilling. For the first half of this year, Samsung Foundry lost more than 5 trillion won ($3.63 billion). TSMC's client list contains some of the biggest names in tech, including Apple (its number one client), Nvidia, Qualcomm, AMD, and MediaTek. It doesn't seem likely that Tesla will require Samsung Foundry to supply it with its most cutting-edge 2nm chips. That's the word from Lee Min-hee, an analyst at BNK Investment & Securities. Investors seem pleased by this announcement as Samsung's shares soared 6.8% on Monday, rising 4,500 Korean won ($3.45) to 70,400 Korean won ($50.68). The feeling is that with this order, Samsung Foundry may have turned a corner in a bid to become more competitive with TSMC. Galaxy Z Fold 7 users are adding reinforcements to the phone after unfolding struggles

Thought skinniness didn't come with its own set of problems? Think again! The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the thinnest foldable phone in the world, and that's causing some usability problems. Hordes of Galaxy Z Fold 7 users have taken to Reddit to complain that unfolding the Fold 7 is a task in itself. Since the phone is so slender, getting a grip on the two halves to open it can be a hit or miss. It's also suspected that the magnets used to hold the two sides together securely are very strong. —Joneep, Reddit user, July 2025 This is particularly noticeable when users try to unfurl the phone with one hand while juggling another task with the other. It may have helped if the phone's frames had a grippier texture. While the issue can mostly be managed with the right case, not everyone wants to put one on, which is why many users have come up with creative solutions, such as adding rubber grips to the sides of the phones. Another idea is to use a skin with a grippy texture. —Mouser05, Reddit user, July 2025 —ContributionLive3126, Reddit user, July 2025 One user has recommended using a collapsible strip to make it easier to unfold the phone one-handed. If you place your thumbs at the same level on both sides and place your middle, ring, and index fingers on the hinge and open the phone while applying gentle downward pressure using your thumbs, it should do the trick. —grepresentitive, Reddit user, July 2025 Should it have to be this complicated is another question. While it's easy to be dismissive of the problem and call it nitpicking, it's important to remember that this is a real concern if it's bothering so many people. It was one of the first things our Victor Hristov noticed when testing out the phone. He explained that the phone's flat sides exacerbated the problem, and he came close to dropping it a few times when trying to open it. Perhaps next time, Samsung will want to opt for angled sides to fix the problem.

Samsung Galaxy A07 and A17 get more certifications, F17 shows up in support pages

Samsung is currently working on a bunch of entry-level smartphones - the Galaxy A07, A17, and F17. The Galaxy A07 has just been certified by NBTC in Thailand, while the A17 5G has received the GCF stamp of approval, both usual steps on the road to becoming official. Neither of these certifications has revealed any specs, unfortunately. Meanwhile, the Galaxy F17 5G's support page has gone live on Samsung's regional websites for both India and Bangladesh, with the model number SM-E176B/DS. Galaxy A07 (left), Galaxy A17 (center) certifications, Galaxy F17 support page (right) The F17 5G is very likely to be a rebranded A17 5G, perhaps with a couple of minor spec changes here and there. And the Galaxy A07 will also spawn the M07 and F07, which will probably be very similar to it too. Speaking of the A07, this one is rumored to come with the MediaTek Helio G99 SoC at the helm, while the A17 5G should get the Exynos 1380 and OIS support for its main camera. Both devices will apparently come with 6GB of RAM and will launch running Android 15, despite the fact that Android 16 is already out (then again, Samsung's One UI 8 based on it hasn't been finalized yet).
