Xiaomi 16 specs leaked, performance and camera seem to be in focus

It's crazy that we're even talking about the Xiaomi 16 series this early, but that's just how things move in the internet age. Following the recently leaked render of the Xiaomi 16, fresh details have now emerged regarding the phone's specs and features. If you're unaware, we're talking about a phone expected to succeed the Xiaomi 15 — a device that only launched in India a couple of months ago. Even if we consider the Xiaomi 15's original China launch, which happened in October last year, and assume Xiaomi sticks to a similar timeline for the 16 series this year — we're still discussing details of a phone that's at least five months away from becoming to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the Xiaomi 16 will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chip — the spiritual successor to the current-gen 8 Elite processor. This isn't surprising, considering the Xiaomi 15 runs on the 8 Elite, so it's only logical the next model will move to the next-gen version. Qualcomm is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 at the company's Snapdragon Summit, which is scheduled to take place between September 23 and 25. That said, Xiaomi has also recently introduced its own in-house chip — the Xring 01 — which currently powers the 15s Pro and Pad 7 Ultra. So, the possibility of the Xiaomi 16 using company's own chip can't be ruled out either. Again, this is purely speculative, and realistically, the Xiaomi 16 will most likely continue with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 interesting detail is the rumoured battery capacity. Reports suggest that the Xiaomi 16 could pack a battery of over 6,500mAh. Early leaks even hint at the possibility of a 7,000mAh unit under the hood. Following the trend in the industry, this will probably be a silicon carbon battery — something we've started seeing more brands adopt for better energy density and efficiency. In the camera department, the Xiaomi 16 is expected to feature a triple rear camera setup. This includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor (reportedly 1/1.3-inch in size), a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with macro functionality. The display is also said to be similar to the one on the Xiaomi 15 — a 6.32-inch panel, likely AMOLED with 12-bit colour support and an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh mentioned earlier, if Xiaomi sticks to its usual launch cycle, we can expect the Xiaomi 16, 16 Pro, and 16 Ultra to debut in China sometime in October. As for the Indian launch, it's safe to assume we'll see the Xiaomi 16 series arrive around March 2026. For context, the Xiaomi 15 was launched in India this past March and is currently available in a single 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variant, priced at Rs 64,999.

Xiaomi 16 specs leak

The Xiaomi 16 has a new round of leaked specs to speak of, courtesy of the prolific Weibo account Digital Chat Station. According to him, the phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset, and will have three 50 MP rear cameras: a main one with a 1/1.3" type sensor, an ultrawide, and a telemacro. The phone will allegedly have a battery over 6,500 mAh in capacity, and a 6.3-inch flat OLED panel with thin bezels on all sides. None of these specs is unexpected, perhaps only the fact that the telemacro isn't specifically called out as a periscope - the Xiaomi 16 was previously rumored to be getting one of those. Xiaomi 16 leaked illustrative render Since Qualcomm is making the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 official at the end of September, don't be surprised if the Xiaomi 16 will also be unveiled before that month ends. In the meantime, we'll surely be hearing much more about it, so stay tuned. Source (in Chinese) | Image source

With Xring O1, Xiaomi seeks chip independence and here is what it means for Qualcomm and Apple

'Our collaboration with Xiaomi has always been about more than technology - it's about collaboration, vision, and a shared belief in what's possible. Lei Jun [CEO of Xiaomi] and I have worked closely over the years to bring innovation to millions of users around the world. With this new agreement, Snapdragon will continue powering Xiaomi's flagship devices as well as new products as it expands into categories like automotive and AR/VR. The next chapter starts now,' Qualcomm's president and chief executive officer, Christiano Amon, wrote on LinkedIn on May 20, are three big takeaways from this piece: 1) China's Xiaomi has signed an agreement with Qualcomm [an American company] to use its flagship - Snapdragon 8-series - chips inside its premium smartphones for many more (but unspecified) years, 2) the Xiaomi 16 series, coming later this year, will be powered by the Snapdragon Elite 2 which is pegged to launch in September, and 3) Xiaomi is probably working on Android XR-based hardware like you read between the lines, you'll find another big takeaway in hiding. If you know, you know. If you don't, that is okay, too. But if you're genuinely interested, spoiler alert: Xiaomi would launch a new phone and tablet exactly two days after signing this 'multi-year' agreement with Qualcomm. Both these devices - the Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra - are powered by the Xiaomi Xring O1, its first independently developed flagship-grade System-on-Chip (SoC).To call it fully custom is a bit misleading as Xiaomi is relying on UK-based ARM's blueprints and TSMC [which is based out of Taiwan] manufacturing to make the Xring O1. But building a chip – however you can – takes a great amount of investment and engineering might which is why only a select few – Apple, Google, and Samsung – are doing it. To be clear, even they are not making 100 percent custom chips [only Qualcomm has been able to crack this code with its Oryon core architecture]. Xiaomi is a much smaller company in comparison and for it to be able to pull off something like this, is a phenomenal achievement. You can say that Xiaomi made history on May 22, is not the first time that Xiaomi has made its own chip. But its first attempt – Surge S1 – which dates to 2017, was a relatively more restrained, mid-tier affair in terms of both technology and scale. With Xring O1, it is taking a swing at Qualcomm and MediaTek's fastest mobile chips in the market today in a fully no-holds-barred fashion. The stats are claims that the Xring O1 achieved over 3 million points in the AnTuTu benchmark, outperforming the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. In Geekbench 6, it reportedly scored over 3,000 in single-core and 9,000 in multi-core tests, with the multi-core score edging past Apple's A18 Pro (which is inside the iPhone 16 Pro). You should take these 'controlled' lab scores with a pinch of salt, but that is hardly the point. The real headline is, Xiaomi is going all-out to challenge Qualcomm and Apple at the highest level, and saying, 'Hello world, look, we can do what Apple, Google, and Samsung can, too.'But it is not so much about beating Qualcomm and MediaTek, or even Apple, Google and Samsung, any more. The need of the hour is self-reliance and while no country is immune to the changing geopolitical and macroeconomic environment, Chinese companies are perhaps the most volatile after the recent Trump tariffs diktat. But Chinese companies have also shown great is a classic example. With no access to US-tech – due to strict sanctions – from Qualcomm chips to Google and Windows software, it built its own ecosystem from the ground up in no time. DeepSeek was able to make Nvidia dance – however briefly – by releasing generative AI models with a significantly smaller number of resources than Xring O1 rollout is another sign of how Chinese companies are coming together to not just brave but take Big Tech head on. Xiaomi has earmarked a USD $7 billion investment, which is roughly Rs 60,000 crore, to build and improve its in-house chip efforts. With AI being the next frontier, these chips would help drive the next phase of growth for the company. It has already announced its own LLM called MiMo, so there is plenty of action happening across the board, not in one or two key Xring O1 isn't just a chip. It is a statement. While it continues to partner with Qualcomm, its first real swing at custom silicon signals a bold pivot toward independence in an increasingly uncertain tech world. With ambitions across AI, hardware, and XR, Xiaomi is no longer content playing catch-up. It is building the future on its own terms and making sure the world takes notice.

Xiaomi 16's design leaked and this is what it may look like

Just a few months back, India witnessed the Xiaomi 15 (review) launch in February. While it is still a new entry into the Indian market, the rumours around its successor -- the Xiaomi 16 -- have started churning up. According to the latest leak, the Xiaomi 16 is expected to debut in September 2025, but in China only. For context, the Chinese variant of the Xiaomi 15 was launched in October 2024. And if the assumption is current for the upcoming launch, the two phones will have a gap of 11 months, which is fair. In his blog, tipster Majon Bu has shared that the Xiaomi 16 is shaping up to be a strong contender in the premium smartphone segment, with fresh leaks offering a closer look at what to expect ahead of its official debut. Let's take a look at what is coming. advertisementXiaomi 16 renders reveal design A leaked CAD render shared by tipster Maijinbu Official reveals a design that retains some visual elements from the Xiaomi 15 but introduces notable refinements. The back panel sports a dual-tone finish, accompanied by a squircle-shaped camera island in the top-left corner. The module houses three camera sensors, an LED flash, and Leica branding — continuing Xiaomi's ongoing camera collaboration. The handset also appears to have slightly curved edges, contributing to a sleek and ergonomic 16: Leaked battery, camera and more advertisement Powering the Xiaomi 16 is expected to be Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset, which is set to be unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit this September. It is noteworthy that the same chipset is rumoured to be featured in the upcoming OnePlus 15, which makes them direct competitors. The Xiaomi 16 is also rumoured to run HyperOS 3, Xiaomi's in-house software interface built on Android 16. This positions the Xiaomi flagship to be one of the first devices globally to feature Qualcomm's latest flagship silicon, potentially delivering major performance and efficiency to the render, the phone will feature volume controls and a power button on the left side, while the bottom edge will house a USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and SIM tray. Despite its compact display size, the Xiaomi 16 is rumoured to pack a large 7,000mAh battery, thanks to the adoption of silicon-carbon (Si/C) battery technology — a move that could significantly improve energy density and battery life without increasing the phone's physical Xiaomi has yet to confirm details, the Xiaomi 16 is expected to sport a triple rear camera system led by a 50-megapixel main sensor. The collaboration with Leica suggests that photography will remain a key selling point for the device.
