Dhubri communal tensions: Assam CM says main accused identified; urges surrender
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the main culprit behind placing cattle parts near a Hanuman temple in Dhubri town during Id-ul-Azha has been identified.
The man who tried to stoke the communal fire should give up, he said after assessing the law and order situation in the western Assam town on Tuesday (June 24, 2025).
'The mastermind has been identified as Mintu Ali. He is currently absconding, and his mobile phone has been switched off. I ask him to surrender,' Mr. Sarma said, adding that 151 people have been arrested in connection with the unrest so far.
The Chief Minister said Dhubri has remained calm since the government took stern measures two weeks ago. 'We are planning long-term measures, including setting up an Army camp,' he said.
He also said action would be taken against officials in the Animal Husbandry Department for letting 1,460 cows enter Dhubri from adjoining West Bengal ahead of Id-ul-Azha.
Mr. Sarma reminded people of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 that prohibits the consumption and sale of beef within a 5-km radius of Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, and Sikh places of worship.
The Chief Minister also declared a beef-free buffer zone around Dhubri's iconic Gurdwara Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib and advised beef sellers to shut down shops or face police action.
He further said the police were probing deeper into 'Nabin Bangla', a new group reportedly espousing the merger of the Muslim-majority Dhubri district with Bangladesh.

4 arrested for tonsuring religious preacher, aide in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah
Four persons were arrested after a group of upper caste men allegedly tonsured the head of a religious preacher and his assistant after finding that they were from the Yadav community in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah district, PTI reported. The incident took place on Sunday night and persons accused in the matter were arrested on Monday. The police took action after the video of the preachers being tonsured was widely shared on social media. The preachers had gone to Dandarpur village for a narration of the Bhagwat Katha, a Hindu religious text. Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, the senior police superintendent of Etawah, said that the video shared on social media showed that after the religious event, 'villagers were misbehaving with two people, and cutting their hair despite their unwillingness'. After taking cognisance of the video, the police reached the spot and identified the person whose head had been tonsured, the officer told PTI. Based on the victim's complaint, a case was registered. The main person accused in the matter is among the four individuals who have been arrested. The four have been identified as Ashish Tiwari, Uttam Kumar Awasthi, Nikki Awasthi and Manu Dubey. All of them are residents of Dandarpur. In a video shared on social media, a person is heard telling the preacher, Sant Singh Yadav, that he was being 'punished for coming to the village of Brahmins'. 'We were questioned over our caste,' PTI quoted him as having alleged. 'It was said that we are chamar [Scheduled Caste], but I said I am not a chamar, I am Yadav'. Sant Singh Yadav alleged that he was 'tortured throughout the night'. 'Urine was sprinkled over me, and I was told that now I have become pure,' he alleged. — Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) June 23, 2025 Sharing the video in a social media post, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said on Monday that the Constitution does not allow caste-based discrimination and that the incident was a ' crime committed against the fundamental right to live with dignity and respect'. The former chief minister had said on Monday that if the police did not act within three days, he would call for a 'major movement' to protect the 'dignity and honour of PDA', referring to pichde (backward classes), Dalits and alpsankhyak (minorities).

'Do not play with the Supreme Court': SC bench slams jail staff for keeping man illegally behind bars over typo in bail order
NEW DELHI: SC on Tuesday fumed at Ghaziabad jail SP refusing to release a Muslim man, who converted to Hinduism to marry but got booked under UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, for a typographical error in the court's order granting him bail. SC on April 29 gave bail to Aftab, who voluntarily converted to Hinduism by performing rituals at an Arya Samaj Mandir & married a Hindu girl according to Hindu rites. The girl's aunt had lodged a missing person complaint when she eloped with Aftab to get married to him. Ghaziabad police lodged a case under Section 366 (kidnapping) of IPC and Sections 3 and 5(1) of the UP anti-conversion law and arrested Aftab on Jan 10 last year, a week after his marriage. Three days later, the police filed a chargesheet. Allahabad HC rejected his bail plea. The SC, while granting bail, mentioned Sections 366 of IPC and Sections 3 and 5, instead of 5(1), of the UP anti-conversion law. On presentation of the bail order before the additional and sessions judge, Ghaziabad, and on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 1.5 lakh with two sureties, order for release of Aftab aka Rahul from jail was issued on May 27. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Τι είναι το ChatGPT για το οποίο μιλάνε όλοι; courses AI Undo You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Nearly a month later, on Wednesday, Aftab's counsel told a bench of Justices K V Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh, "The release order was returned by the jail authorities on the ground that the charges mentioned in the jail register - Section 366 of IPC and Sections 3 and 5(1) of the anti-conversion law - does not match with the particulars mentioned in the release order." The bench fumed at the hair-splitting by the jail authorities to keep the man illegally behind bars for more than a month and said if this was the reason for refusing to release the petitioner, then it would initiate contempt of court proceedings against the officials concerned. "Do not play with the Supreme Court," the Justice Viswanathan-led bench warned. It ordered the superintendent of Ghaziabad district jail to remain present in court on Thursday. "Director general (prisons) will remain present through virtual mode," the bench said. Though the SC caught the lapse on part of jail officials, the petitioner innocently requested the court to modify the order and mention the sections correctly to enable his release from prison.
