England hit by kit supplier blunder on eve of Women's Rugby World Cup in major blow to fans
John Mitchell's side are firm favourites to seal global glory on English soil and will kick-off the tournament against the USA at Sunderland 's Stadium of Light on Friday.
But Daily Mail Sport has learned there has been a shortage in the production of the replica jerseys, which will be worn by players like Ellie Kildunne and Natasha Hunt, by Castore. England's Women's Rugby World Cup kit is not available on the RFU's official online store.
It also cannot be bought in sports and leisure shops up and down the country.
A small number of official shirts will be on sale at the Stadium of Light and other England tournament match venues. But they are expected to sell out very quickly and won't then be available anywhere else. 'We can confirm official England Rugby World Cup shirts are now in short supply as fans continue to show their amazing support for the Red Roses,' Castore said in a statement. 'Online stores are now sold out, but stock will be available at England game match venues.
'There is a wide range of other Red Roses products available for fans to buy, including official Rugby World Cup branded merchandise with additional products to be launched in the coming weeks. This is all available on the England Rugby store online.
'We're confident Red Roses fans will have plenty of product to purchase and we thank supporters for their amazing support.'
The fact such small numbers of England World Cup kits are available before a ball has even been kicked in the hotly-anticipated tournament reflects badly on Castore's support for the women's game. Castore became official kit supplier to the RFU earlier this year, replacing Umbro. It is understood Castore's shortfall is down to a logistical issue which resulted in not enough shirts being ordered by the company. The 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup is set to be the biggest yet, with nearly 500,000 tickets sold and the September 27 final at Twickenham already at capacity. England's women's regular match shirt, with sponsor O2 on the front, can still be bought online.
But the tournament jersey, with red trim and no sponsor, cannot.
World Cup rules state teams aren't allowed to showcase brand deals on their kits. However, the Castore shortfall of World Cup shirts means organiser World Rugby has allowed the RFU to sell its regular women's jerseys, with O2 on the front, at match venues.
It is understood the RFU has been left hugely frustrated by the kit supplier mix-up and has looked to rectify it but with no immediate joy.
Other England Women's Rugby World Cup merchandise, including the team's new range of Barbie-inspired clothing, can still be bought.
The RFU is also soon to release a clothing partnership with the Spice Girls.
It is hard to escape the fact, however, that a shortage of England kit simply would not happen in the men's game, especially on the eve of a home World Cup.
Castore's error brings back memories of Nike's decision not to put the shirt of former England women's football goalkeeper Mary Earps on public sale ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Earps, now retired from international duty, described it at the time as 'hugely disappointing and very hurtful.'
After England's Lionesses lifted their second consecutive European Championship trophy last month, their rugby counterparts are now looking to emulate that success.
It is a shame, however, many of those watching on in the stands and at home in the weeks to come won't be able to be decked out in team merchandise.

Car Deal of the Day: we've never seen the Cupra Born this cheap
Stylish design; premium feel 347-mile range; great fun to drive Just £199.81 a month The Cupra Born neatly mixes a sporty driving experience with an upmarket feel. It's also a car you usually have to pay pretty handsomely for – but not right now. Scouring the Auto Express Buy A Car service, we found Leasing Options is offering the desirable EV for under £200 a month – and that's down to the Government's Electric Car Grant. After a not-unreasonable £2,747.11 initial outlay, the Born requires 24 monthly payments of £199.81, which constitutes excellent value for money. There's an annual mileage cap of 5,000, but you can bump this up to a far more flexible 8,000 for just under £20 a month more. Advertisement - Article continues below You'll be getting the keys to the entry-level trim, but this is no problem as Cupra tends to give its cars a high level of standard equipment. On the Born, V1 trim gets you sports bucket seats trimmed in recycled materials, full LED front and rear lights, a heated steering wheel and a 12.9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The deal also gets you the largest battery on offer in the Born. This gives a claimed range of 347 miles, while the 79kWh pack has a maximum DC charging speed of 175kW, so rapid charging takes around 30 minutes. This model adds aero-styled 20-inch alloy wheels for a really sporty look. The Born gets a rear-mounted electric motor that packs 228bhp, delivering a pretty rapid 0-62mph acceleration time of 7.1 seconds. An 'e-boost' button on the steering wheel provides a short extra punch of power when overtaking. It's a fun car to drive, too. Although heavily based on the Volkswagen ID.3, the Born feels sharper and more engaging on the road. It's a more direct steer with a firmer ride – perfect for those who want some fun from their EV, but not at the cost of practicality and range. Manuel Akanji weighs up future as Galatasaray hit Manchester City's £15m valuation of Treble winner
Manuel Akanji is debating his future after Galatasaray hit Manchester City 's valuation of the defender. The Turkish champions want to land Akanji as well as City goalkeeper Ederson, while also holding long-standing interest in Ilkay Gundogan. Galatasaray are willing to meet the £15million required to land Akanji, who does also have interest from elsewhere ahead of the transfer window closing on September 1. The Switzerland international joined City from Borussia Dortmund for £15m three years ago, becoming an integral part of their Treble success. Pep Guardiola wants to trim the numbers in his squad this month and currently has nine defenders at his disposal. Six of those can play centrally and Akanji's competition at right back, Rico Lewis, is set to sign a new five-year contract after attracting interest from Nottingham Forest. Akanji, 30, is assessing his options and will be allowed to determine next steps. Both he and Gundogan were unused substitutes for the opening day victory at Wolves last weekend. Guardiola claimed that the squad remaining its current size would be unhealthy for team morale over the coming months. Meanwhile, exciting attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri has joined Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan. Vitor Reis, Jack Grealish, James McAtee and Maximo Perrone have all moved on either on loan or permanently.
