From Lady Gaga to Gloria Gaynor: What We're Listening to Right Now

Yahoo27-02-2025

2025 looks to be an exciting year for music, and if the last several weeks are any indication, artists are feeling inspired in new ways, pushing themselves in different directions and/or returning to styles and aesthetics that worked in the past. Collaborations have been —and will continue to be— huge, mixing genres and vibes that are accessible to everyone. Here's 10 songs we're listening to right now.
LADY GAGA — "Abracadabra" (Interscope) Yes, this one sounds awfully similar to Stefani Gemanotta's heyday hits, but that is not only okay with fans, it feels like what we all need right now. A return to her weirdo banger-babe era makes sense after she's been in movie star mode the past few years. We're one of the few who actually enjoyed Joker: Folie à Deux and to a lesser extent, the retro swing-era-inspired soundtrack, Harlequin, and the chart-topping collaboration with Bruno Mars 'Die With A Smile." But there's a reason those didn't explode the way 'Abracadabra' has. Gaga's dance floor anthems are as infectious as any of the current crop of pop starlets, but they also have a quirky allure that no one else can touch, even without the arty videos. Hypnotic, synthy, sexy and diva-level dramatic, it's got the magic its name implies. Can't wait to hear it in the club and get an earful of Mayhem, the full release, out on March 7.
JARVIS COCKER — "California Dreamin'" (Bandcamp)Speaking of Gaga and Mars, the pair's rendition of The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'" at the Grammys was beautiful, especially in the context of celebrating our city post-wild fires. But we love this version, by the venerable Jarvis Cocker (of the band Pulp) even more. It's off of Los Angeles Rising, a benefit comp for Los Angeles fire victims that came out earlier this month. L.A.'s music community led by Kevin Haskins (Love and Rockets, Bauhaus) and producer Nick Launay (Amyl and the Sniffers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) came together for this epic collection featuring Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, Gary Numan, Primal Scream, Devo, Danny Elfman and many more. And Cocker's stripped down take on the classic, recorded in 2020, conveys the complex emotions —loss and love— felt by all of us in Southern California during and after the fires. BRUNO MARS & SEXYY RED — "Fat Juicy & Wet" (Atlantic)It's time to talk about Bruno... Known for his poetic lyrics and melodic romanticism, the singer-songwriter is making fans blush with his latest, a lascivious collab with rapper Sexyy Red that feels like a companion, or rather a f*ck buddy, to Cardi B's "WAP." Topically, it covers the same area anyway. The lyrics will make you cringe and cackle, especially when you realize it's Mars talkin' 'bout gangbangs and good "kitty," but the basslines and groove are good enough to make any frisky-time playlist in spite of, not due to, the dirty talk. And the video —with cameos by his other recent duet dolls, Gaga and Blackpink's Rose— was well timed to Valentine's Day, bringing fun, frolic, and filth to February.DOECHI — "Denial is a River" (Capitol) Doechii's Alligator Bites Never Heal won the Grammy for Best Rap Album this year, and the current single, 'Denial Is A River,' is a perfect intro for those who didn't know her work before the win. The slick and addictive track shows off her gifts for story-telling and her fierce, audaciously authentic flow. The rapper, originally from Florida and now residing in L.A., makes charismatic and conversational tracks worth paying attention to, but they're unique and vibey enough when you just want badass background sounds, too.
FKA TWIGS — "Striptease" (Atlantic) Her work in The Crow revamp last year didn't get the recognition it deserved, but FKA Twigs has always shown her acting chops in her music videos anyway— her clip for "Cellophane" being the most memorable. Her latest. "Striptease" continues the theme of shedding layers, and her attraction to dark subject matter and darker emotions drives the expression. Angelic yet potent, her vocals on her third studio album EUSEXUA shimmer sonically and allude to both internal and external exposure, something she's dealt with a lot, especially when it comes to her past relationships. Experimental and ethereal, FKA's output has a punk rock spirit and a goth soul, something she talked about in our chat for LA mag last August.
WARFIELD — "Kiss Kiss Kiss" (Cleopatra) Justin Warfield is best known as one half of She Wants Revenge, but the L.A.-born and bred music artist has been making multi-genre sounds for decades. With his brand new solo project, Warfield, he's delving even deeper into his death rock roots. Faster tempos, imposing instrumentation, and Warfield's pensive and propulsive vocals make for a post-punk potency that feels fiercely fresh. This ain't your mom or dad's "goth" — because we never called it that anyway. Speaking of which, our kid is an extra in the video filmed at Genghis Cohen in L.A. See SWR at Cruel World this Spring and look for Warfield's full EP, Deathrock Devotionals Vol I on Cleopatra Records later his year.
JUANITA & JUAN — "Aftertaste" (The Red Records)Two Los Angeles music legends —Alice Bag and Kid Congo— join forces for this new project, a Chicano lounge duo that's melodic and groovy but still packs a punch worthy of their musical pasts. Alice aka Alicia Armendariz is best known for her seminal L.A. punk group The Bags (which most will recall from Penelope Spheeris' documentary, Decline of the Western Civilization) while Kid Congo Powers has had an equally formidable career, playing with the Gun Club and The Cramps. The pair's charisma sparkles on this tasty bite from their kitschy, catchy repertoire.
BAD BUNNY — 'Baile Inolvidable' (Rimas) Old school salsa grooves drive the energy of this new Bad Bunny track (which translates to "Unforgettable Dance"), but it's not just the focus on movement that makes it so dynamic. There's a joyful energy here that clearly seeks to celebrate traditional Puerto Rican sounds, from the horns and piano to the harmonic back-up vocals and of course, the percussion. The hip-hop influences of BB's music are nearly non-existent here, and as a Latina who grew up hearing artists like Tito Puente often, this one feels like home. Even non-Latin music fans will enjoy the exuberance and hopefully, learn about a music genre that doesn't often get exposure on the pop charts.
SABRINA CARPENTER & DOLLY PARTON — "Please, Please, Please" (Hollywood/Island)Add Dolly Parton to literally anything and it gets better. While Carpenter's single "Please, Please, Please," became a hit thanks to her patented sass and sex appeal (and possibly her beau at the time, Barry Keoghan, starring in the video) this new take on the track makes for a much sweeter and cleaner rendition— and a truly adorable duet. The extra twang compliments Carpenter's breathy croon nicely as do Parton's harmonies, which do indeed please, and the reference to her actor ex at the end of the video wraps it all up with a wink.
GLORIA GAYNOR — "Fida Known" (Rockin' Robin)
If you've never blasted Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive' after a break-up are you even human? The disco classic might be the ultimate anthem for kicking a bad relationship to the curb and moving on with strength. Now, the two-time Grammy winner is back with a new single, 'Fida Known' another funky proclamation about love and loss, focused on reflection and renewal. It's the first single off Gaynor's upcoming EP, Happy Tears coming this Spring, which also coincides with the recent release of her biopic Robin Roberts Presents I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story, available to stream on Lifetime now.

Are You Ready For The Most Amazing Full Moon Of 2025? It's Here

Are you ready for the most amazing Full Moon of 2025? Well, it's here! Mark your calendar for June 11th to bask in the glow of the Strawberry Full Moon in Sagittarius. It's bringing all the rizz and good vibes that we need. For the first time in a while, the cosmos is giving abundance, prosperity, and positivity to us, allowing us to revel in our passions and have an open heart. Nothing can stand in the way of attaining greatness, not even ourselves. So, lean into the amazing energy during the last Full Moon of spring. Why do we love the Strawberry Full Moon? Well, it's lucky and prosperous. Sagittarius is one of the most fortunate signs of the zodiac, and when the Moon is in this fire sign, it's a blessing. We want to say 'yes,' take a chance, believe in ourselves and others, and seize the day. More importantly, we let go of negativity and should have an optimistic outlook. e appreciate what we have and aren't taking anything for granted. The sky's the limit for what we can achieve if we keep the faith and remain positive. We got this! The Full Moon in Sagittarius urges us to cut loose from the past and be free like a bird. Nothing can hold us back from embracing our truest forms, and if they do, then we'll fight relentlessly for autonomy, especially since Mars in Leo is pushing us to do so. Inspiration and motivation will come out of nowhere, helping us embrace our creativity. Whether writing, painting, or debating, our talents will take center stage. The light shines on our strengths and desires. So, go ahead and post a thirst trap or a video showcasing your gifts. Glowing up won't be hard to do. As a matter of fact, it'll come naturally to us. The Nodes of Destiny are pushing us to make major decisions. As they square the Full Moon (both the sun and moon) we will be presented with two different opportunities. It's up to us to pick the path that most aligns with our essence and being. Think before acting impulsively by discussing the situation with a friend or family member who can offer solid advice. You don't want to rush into a situation immediately, so allow yourself a few hours or even a few days to contemplate and meditate. Being mindful is time well spent. Two days before the Full Moon on June 9th, Jupiter enters Cancer. Since Jupiter is Sagittarius's planetary ruler, and the expansive planet is now paddling through Cancer, we can expect fantastic opportunities to come our way. Cancer is Jupiter's favorite sign, offering joy and love. The cosmos is supporting our dreams. Use this lunation to your advantage by setting intentions that speak to your soul and manifesting what is in your heart. Things will come together quickly, due to the power of the Sagittarius Full Moon. Lean into your visions with gusto. The same day, Mercury in Cancer harmonizes with Venus in Taurus. When these two planets come together, it gives us a chance to communicate from the heart. This is on brand with the Sagittarius Full Moon. We won't be able to hold back. Go big or home with your feelings and take a chance. Slide into your crush's DMs and ask them out. Let your boss know that you are ready for a promotion or raise. Apply for the job of your dreams. Take a trip to a new and exciting place. Whatever you choose to do, the universe wants you to make the first move and achieve your goals. Go for the gold! Fell in the boundless effervescence of the Strawberry Full Moon in Sagittarius. Do not forget to align yourself with your innermost hopes and aspirations. Think big! You have the potential to make them real. This is your time to make anything happen. Use it to your advantage.

Lumines Arise combines that addictive puzzling flow with a killer soundtrack

After a symphony, online multiplayer and a remaster, the well-regarded (and often handheld) puzzler Lumines is getting Enhance's full synesthetic, Tetris-flowing, treatment. Lumines Arise is almost here. If you haven't played the game before, Lumines' premise centers on rotating and dropping four-square blocks made of one or two colors, building up larger squares of a single color. The game's timeline sweeps across the playfield – to the beat of the soundtrack – erasing completed squares in its path, while also giving you the brief opportunity to quickly drop more squares, add multiplier combos and score even more points. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the "Content and social-media partners" setting to do so. Lumines Arise adds a new mechanic to the addictive yet simple puzzle. 'Burst' is a refillable bar that you can trigger with L2/R2, which locks a square on the playing field, allowing you to pile on subsequent blocks. You can initiate Burst once the counter has rolled above 50, although it maxes out at 100. As you might expect for a synesthesia-tickling game like Arise , Burst mode has its own low-key musical accompaniment. Lumines has never looked better. But that's not just due to 2025 hardware power, but also design choices for Lumines' skins – the unhinged wallpaper design and block themes that bubble up as you advance through puzzle stages. They're delightfully mad and, at times, distracting. (As you play, the view of your Lumines blocks will occasionally 'zoom' closer – this is intentional. Game Director Takashi Ishihara said this was to both add some dynamism to what are typically static blocks, but also to pull the players' attention back to the game at hand. Lumines Arise wants you to focus on the now, not the score, your Burst meter, or your customizable avatar.) My favorite part of the demo was the final stage, which featured two chameleons simply raving along to the dance music. The soundtrack is, naturally, a banger, too. Lumines Arise features new music from Hydelic, also responsible for the award-winning soundtrack of Tetris Effect: Connected . (The band has already launched one track, "Only Human," on Bandcamp – it's coming to other streaming services, too.) On another stage, two skeletal hands, seemingly strung up like puppets, twitch and wriggle as you shift and rotate your blocks. If anything, I think Enhance missed a trick not mapping the finger movements to a DualSense controller. I said that in front of Ishihara because I have zero sense of decorum — apparently, he'd had the same idea. I now consider myself a game designer. I got to briefly see Lumines Arise running on a Steam Deck, too. The time of the handheld console and PC is now, so it's nice to see a typically made-for-consoles game ready for this new gaming PC form factor. Ishihara teased that there's more to reveal ahead of Arise 's launch. The game will launch on both PS5 and Steam, and it will also feature VR compatibility on both platforms. While Enhance wasn't yet willing to reveal the details, there will also be some form of multiplayer, but it seems like it'll be in a different form compared to the more adversarial nature of Tetris Effect's multiplayer modes. Additionally, Ishihara wanted to highlight that the avatars, which dance and emote in sync with your in-game actions, now feature legs. That is important, apparently. Enhance is promising more answers in due time. Lumines Arise is set to launch in fall 2025.

Forbes Travel Guide's Best Hotel Bars For 2025

Hotel bars have become destinations in their own right. The finest examples are familiar yet transporting, offering a welcome respite for weary travelers, a launching pad for an exciting night out or the elegance of a perfectly crafted cocktail. The inaugural Forbes Travel Guide Star Bars for 2025 honors the world's most exceptional hotel bar experiences. A timeless icon such as Monaco's Le Bar Américain at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo demonstrates daily why it's endured since the 1930s, with its jazzy ambiance and nightly music drawing illustrious fans from Josephine Baker to Lady Gaga. Then there are new favorites such as the BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River's, which connects Asia with North and South America, showcasing Mexico-inspired drinks in a dazzling Art Nouveau space that evokes Buenos Aires. The inaugural list also includes sky bars—including SkyHigh on the 60th floor of the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia and the Lounge & Bar on the 102nd floor of The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong—and old school drinking dens, like Rosewood London's Scarfes Bar, which draws from English caricaturist Gerald Scarfe's famous works, and Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa's Library by the Sea, a Grand Cayman hot spot that interprets literary works through creative cocktails. Forbes Travel Guide recognized 58 bars this year to celebrate its 1958 founding as Mobil Travel Guide. And FTG's expert, incognito inspectors visited each one, sampling cocktails on multiple visits. The winners were determined by data collected as part of FTG's 2024 and 2025 Star Ratings, based on several exacting standards. The top bars achieved the highest scores for their beverage program and presentation, as well as providing seamless service and an exceptional guest experience. FTG also focused on publicly accessible hotel bars. London rang up the most accolades with seven bars, followed by Paris with five and Dubai at four. When it comes to brands, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts earned eight spots, and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company tied with five winners each. 'These awards highlight sophisticated ambiance, elevated service, artfully curated wine lists and cocktails that are skillfully crafted and creatively presented," says Bastien Gardrat, Forbes Travel Guide's Global Spirits Ambassador. 'These are elements that come together to create an unforgettable hotel bar experience.' Here are the Star Bars for 2025 The Study at Four Seasons Hotel, Macao VIRTÙ at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi Wing Lei Bar at Wynn Palace, Macau
