Clemson vs. SMU could define the 2025 College Football Playoff race
CBS Sports has identified key matchups throughout the 2025 college football season that could influence the 12-team College Football Playoff race, and Clemson's clash with SMU on Oct. 18 was highlighted as Week 8's most impactful game.
The Tigers and Mustangs will meet in Death Valley for the first time, renewing a matchup that delivered a thrilling finish in the 2024 ACC Championship Game. That contest ended with Nolan Hauser drilling a 56-yard field goal as time expired, securing Clemson's 22nd conference title and a return to the CFP after a four-year absence.
CBS Sports' Chip Patterson noted that Week 8 features several major showdowns, including Georgia-Ole Miss and Alabama-Tennessee, but emphasized the importance of the Clemson-SMU rematch in the ACC race. With the Tigers aiming to build on their recent success, this game could significantly shape the playoff picture.
Like last season, we should expect fireworks in this matchup. Both offenses should be very explosive in 2025, and each team should be competing for the conference title.
Clemson, ranked No. 8 in CBS Sports' early 2025 rankings, will begin its season with a showdown against LSU at home on Aug. 30.

Iowa football QB Mark Gronowski leads the pack of best Big Ten returning quarterbacks
Iowa football QB Mark Gronowski leads the pack of best Big Ten returning quarterbacks As the summer months continue to slowly creep by as the 2025 college football season kickoff looms, there is a growing sense of expectations and excitement surrounding the Iowa Hawkeyes and the noise they could potentially make this fall. The reason for the anticipation rests on the shoulders of their new quarterback, South Dakota State Jackrabbits transfer Mark Gronowski. Expected to be one of the most impactful transfers in the Big Ten, the Hawkeyes and their faithful are hoping that he can continue the dominance that he showed at the FCS level while winning two national championships. Mark Gronowski's arm talent and running ability are undeniable, and that combination of skill sets has him ranked as the top returning quarterback in the Big Ten entering 2025, per Pro Football Focus. While at South Dakota State, Mark Gronowski threw for 10,330 yards and 93 touchdowns while adding 1,767 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns on the ground to prove that defenses have to game plan for him in a multitude of ways. Other Big Ten quarterbacks returning in 2025 that could lead their teams to a successful year, or even a College Football Playoff run, include Penn State's Drew Allar, UCLA's new QB Nico Iamaleava, Indiana's new QB Fernando Mendoza, and Luke Altmyer, the signal caller of the Illinois Fighting Illini. Alabama basketball set to face former player, assistant in 2025-26 nonconference schedule
Alabama basketball set to face former player, assistant in 2025-26 nonconference schedule Alabama basketball added another opponent to its 2025-26 nonconference slate this week. The Crimson Tide will face the Kennesaw State Owls from Conference USA on Sunday, Dec. 21. The game will be played at a neutral site, Propst Arena in Huntsville. The matchup against the Owls will come against a head coach that Alabama fans know well: former Crimson Tide guard and assistant coach Antoine Pettway. A starter on Alabama's 2004 team that went on a deep NCAA Tournament run to reach the program's first Elite Eight, Pettway will be in his third season as Owls head coach. He previously served as an assistant at Alabama from 2013-23 under Anthony Grant, Avery Johnson and Nate Oats. Pettway guided Kennesaw State to a 19-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Conference USA play last season. He had a four-year playing career at Alabama from 2000-01 to 2003-04 under coach Mark Gottfried, averaging 9.1 points per game to go with 3.7 rebounds with 3.5 assists while starting all 33 games his senior season. Oats has put together another loaded nonconference schedule with marquee matchups for 2025-26. The Crimson Tide will face Illinois (in Chicago), Purdue (at Coleman Coliseum), St. John's (Madison Square Garden) and Arizona (in Birmingham), among others. Alabama finished 28-9 last season and advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to Duke in the East Region final in Newark. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 6 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
