This year marks the 35th anniversary of the awards and the 10th anniversary of the ceremony taking place in Chicago. This year's ceremony will be hosted by chefs Nyesha Arrington and Andrew Zimmern.

The James Beard Awards are often referred to as 'the Oscars of the food world.' The James Beard Foundation will recognize chefs and restaurants tonight. It previously honored excellence in books, broadcast media and journalism covering food and drink at a ceremony on Saturday.
James Beard was a Portland-born chef who was revered as the dean of American cooking. He was an actor, singer and caterer, and eventually went on to star in a TV cooking show called 'I Love to Eat.' He created the James Beard Cooking School in 1955, wrote a newspaper column and published multiple cookbooks. He died in 1985 and the James Beard Foundation was established in his honor.
Semifinalists were announced in January, while the list of official nominees was announced in April.
Chicago has five nominees hoping to clinch a win tonight: Kumiko in the Outstanding Bar category; Galit in the Outstanding Restaurant category; and Thai Dang of HaiSous, Chris Jung and Erling Wu-Bower of Maxwells Trading, and Noah Sandoval of Oriole in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Chicago's most recent previous winners include Lula Cafe, which won the Outstanding Hospitality category in 2024; Tim Flores and Genie Kwon of Kasama, who won the Best Chef: Great Lakes category in 2023; and Damarr Brown of Virtue, who won the Emerging Chef category in 2023. Earlier this year, the James Beard Foundation recognized Lem's Bar-B-Q, Chicago's oldest Black-owned barbecue restaurant, as a recipient of its America's Classics Awards.

Kelly Clarkson is stepping back into the spotlight less than two weeks after her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock passed away. The first episode of the 43-year-old singer-songwriter's NBC special Songs & Stories will premiere at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19. As Star previously reported, the four-part pre-recorded special features the 'Miss Independent' songstress having 'unfiltered' conversations with a different musician/musical group each week, starting with the Jonas Brothers on Tuesday, according to the NBC website. In the following weeks, the American Idol alum will sit down with Gloria Estefan, Lizzo and Teddy Swims. Per NBC, viewers will also get to see musical performances in an 'intimate, unplugged setting.' As for the Grammy Award winner's other TV commitments, Star reported last week that Clarkson is allegedly going to be missing filming dates for season 29 of The Voice. 'Kelly will not be at the tapings scheduled next week for Thursday and Friday,' a source told The Sun in an article published Thursday, August 14. 'Production is working on a replacement coach for her now.' However, TMZ confirmed earlier this month that The Kelly Clarkson Show will be back for its seventh season this fall, with new episodes debuting in September. Clarkson's television appearance comes shortly after Blackstock died at 48 years old on Thursday, August 7. The former talent manager — who shares kids River, 11, and Remington, 9, with Clarkson — lost his three-year battle with melanoma.

Weapons actress Amy Madigan is currently courting Oscar buzz for her role as Aunt Gladys in the breakout horror hit, but she's also addressing an Academy Awards controversy she was present for nearly three decades ago. Following an introduction by Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese at the 1999 Oscars, stars like Warren Beatty and Kathy Bates were shown standing to applaud On the Waterfront director Elia Kazan's acceptance of an Honorary Award from inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. However, a shot from the live broadcast showed Madigan and her husband, actor Ed Harris, looking stone-faced as they watched Kazan accept his statuette in the room. Kazan became a pariah in some Hollywood circles following his HUAC testimony, during which he named eight people who'd participated in Communist Party activities alongside him. In a 1997 interview with the Times, Kazan reflected on pushback he received over the years. "You want to know the truth? Not one bit," he said when asked if he was bothered by the anger against him nearly five decades after his HUAC testimony. "I've had so much praise in my life. Some of it deserved, some of it not deserved. What does it matter?'' Kazan continued, ''That whole time wasn't very nice. People were really hurt by what went on. I was part of it, I suppose. I spoke my mind and I had a right to do it.'' Though Kazan died in 2003 at 94, his Hollywood legacy lives on through his son, Matilda and Bicentennial Man writer Nicholas Kazan, and his actress granddaughters Maya (The Knick) and Zoe Kazan (Olive Kitteridge). In a recent interview with EW, Madigan additionally reflected on her Weapons success. Writer-director Zach Cregger's horror hit has earned $150 million at the global box office after only 10 days in release. "It's not that I discount it, but in this business, nothing's real till it's real," she said about the thought of returning for a sequel, comparing the buzz to chatter about her potential Oscar nod for the film. "I just had such a great time working with Zach and being inside that brain of his. That's really the gift of how the movie came out. The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I'll leave it at that."
