
AI records advanced proficiency in forecasting storms
Two research teams have recorded impressive levels of success with artificial intelligence (AI)-based weather forecasting systems.
According to a report, the first research team from Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) leveraged the company's Aurora AI model to create an advanced weather forecasting system. The research, published in the Nature Journal, disclosed that the Aurora AI-based model outperformed traditional computerized weather forecasts.
The Microsoft researchers noted that the model can accurately predict a range of weather events, including narrowing down forecasts to specific ocean wave patterns and air quality. Furthermore, the researchers state that the model exceeded expectations in forecasting tropical cyclones with significantly lower computational costs.
The team achieved the feat by training the AI weather prediction model on over 1 million hours of 'diverse geophysical data,' providing the system with a deep pool to accurately make forecasts.
A U.S.-based team has also recorded significant strides in AI-based weather forecasts, leaning on Google DeepMind's (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Graphcast tool. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers revealed that the new model is 10X faster than traditional systems in storm predictions.
The model, trained on data from NOAA's Warn-on-Forecast-System (WOFS), reduces the forecast time for storms from nearly five minutes to seconds. Apart from spotting incoming storms, the Google-based model can predict the storm's pattern and movement for up to two hours with remarkable accuracy.
'The model yielded largely accurate predictions of how storms would evolve for up to two hours,' read the report. 'These predictions matched 70% to 80% of those generated by the Warn-on-Forecast system.'
Big Tech is hurtling toward AI-based weather forecasting tools, with Google leading the charge. Microsoft and IBM (NASDAQ: IBM) have also unveiled their AI-based weather prediction models with varying degrees of success.

The scourge of food fraud is on the rise, stealing nearly $50 billion annually from the global food industry while posing significant health risks. However, a report notes that blockchain offers a veritable solution to stifle the activities of bad actors in the food industry.
According to a report, while food fraud siphons only a small slice of the food industry's $12 trillion valuation, the figure is equivalent to the GDP of Malta. Cases of food mislabeling and dilution are at an all-time high, with horse meat sold as beef and olive oil diluted with cheaper vegetable oils.
The report notes that the absence of transparency in global supply chains is fueling the rise of food fraud. With industry processes built in silos and 'information islands,' participants in the supply chain do not have a bird's eye view of the processes.
'Many companies maintain their own internal tracking systems, but these often lack interoperability with their suppliers or customers,' said Naoris Protocol CEO David Carvalho.
To increase transparency and reduce the footprint of bad actors in the space, industry experts are making a case for blockchain. There is a consensus that the transparency and immutability features of publicly distributed ledgers will hold food suppliers to a higher standard.

Experts are turning to the utility of smart contracts and automation functionalities as reasons for blockchain-based supply chains to fight food fraud. Early use cases have yielded a streak of positives with South Korea's KT using the technology to fight food fraud, laying the foundation for new entrants.
Vietnamese companies are turning to blockchain to verify halal certifications, preventing unscrupulous suppliers from passing off non-halal food to unsuspecting consumers. Malaysia is also mulling the prospects of on-chain halal certifications, citing a wave of positives for the food industry.

Incorporating blockchain in food supply chains is not easy, with the report noting steep integration costs and manpower training. Apart from high implementation costs, there is the additional 'garbage in, garbage out' challenge associated with a Web3-based system.
The report recommends the integration of oracles and IoT technologies to feed external data into distributed ledgers. Other challenges include privacy and data concerns, as well as the absence of standardized protocols for blockchain adoption across several jurisdictions.

Palo Alto to scoop up CyberArk for $25 billion to tackle AI-era threats
July 30 (Reuters) - Palo Alto Networks (PANW.O), opens new tab said on Wednesday it would buy Israeli peer CyberArk Software (CYBG.F), opens new tab for about $25 billion, deepening its push to become a comprehensive provider of cybersecurity services amid rising AI-driven threats. The deal, Palo Alto' biggest yet and one of the largest tech takeovers this year, is the latest in a wave of consolidation as companies look to streamline vendors after facing breaches while relying on a patchwork of firms. It follows Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab $32 billion acquisition of Israeli startup Wiz in March, and would broaden Palo Alto's cybersecurity offerings by adding identity security tools, bolstering its appeal to large enterprise customers. CyberArk investors will receive $45.00 in cash and 2.2005 shares of Palo Alto for each share they own under the deal, the companies said in a joint statement. The acquisition is expected to close in fiscal 2026 and will immediately add to Palo Alto's revenue growth, as well as gross margin. "The rise of AI and the explosion of machine identities have made it clear that the future of security must be built on the vision that every identity requires the right level of privilege controls," Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora said. CyberArk specializes in privileged access management, technology that helps organizations safeguard sensitive systems by limiting and monitoring access to critical accounts. Its customers include Carnival Corp, Panasonic and Aflac. A surge in cyberattacks, including data breaches and ransomware, has driven demand for more comprehensive defenses. That has fueled interest in firms including CyberArk. The deal also comes as Palo Alto looks to accelerate its AI security push, with analysts at Scotiabank saying that it could use its large salesforce to drive adoption of CyberArk's tools -seen as critical for securing emerging agentic AI systems.

Radar satellite launched by India and NASA will track miniscule changes to Earth's land and ice
NASA and India paired up to launch an Earth-mapping satellite on Wednesday capable of tracking even the slightest shifts in land and ice. The $1.3 billion mission will help forecasters and first responders stay one step ahead of floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and other disasters, according to scientists. Rocketing to orbit from India, the satellite will survey virtually all of Earth's terrain multiple times. Its two radars — one from the U.S. and the other from India — will operate day and night, peering through clouds, rain and foliage to collect troves of data in extraordinary detail. Microwave signals beamed down to Earth from the dual radars will bounce back up to the satellite's super-sized antenna reflector perched at the end of a boom like a beach umbrella. Scientists will compare the incoming and outgoing signals as the spacecraft passes over the same locations twice every 12 days, teasing out changes as small as a fraction of an inch (1 centimeter). It's 'a first-of-its-kind, jewel radar satellite that will change the way we study our home planet and better predict a natural disaster before it strikes," NASA's science mission chief Nicky Fox said ahead of liftoff. Fox led a small NASA delegation to India for the launch. It will take a full week to extend the satellite's 30-foot (9-meter) boom and open the 39-foot-in-diameter (12-meter) drum-shaped reflector made of gold-plated wire mesh. Science operations should begin by the end of October. Among the satellite's most pressing measurements: melting glaciers and polar ice sheets; shifting groundwater supplies; motion and stress of land surfaces prompting landslides and earthquakes; and forest and wetland disruptions boosting carbon dioxide and methane emissions. NASA is contributing $1.2 billion to the three-year mission; it supplied the low-frequency radar and reflector. The Indian Space Research Organization's $91 million share includes the higher-frequency radar and main satellite structure, as well as the launch from a barrier island in the Bay of Bengal. It's the biggest space collaboration between the two countries. The satellite called NISAR — short for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar — will operate from a near-polar-circling orbit 464 miles (747 kilometers) high.
