iPhone 17 Air's incredible thinness ‘showcased' in comparison photo
Are you interested in seeing just how thin the rumored Apple iPhone 17 Air is going to be? An interesting image has been shared that appears to show Apple's next big thing next to the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, and the difference between them is stark. If you're not familiar with the 16 Pro Max, it measures 8.25mm thick, the same as the standard iPhone 16 Pro. In the photo, it appears the iPhone 17 Air is about half its thickness.
The two images originate from known mobile news leaker Majin Bu on X, but there's no source beyond this. It appears they are stills from a video too, meaning more examples may be ready to share in the near future, something Bu had already teased. If the iPhone 17 Air is half as thick as the iPhone 16 Pro Max at around 5mm, it will be thinner than Samsung's rival Galaxy S25 Edge, which is rumored to be around 5.8mm thick.
It'd also undercut the Tecno Spark Slim concept phone shown at MWC 2025, which has a 5.75mm thickness. Very few smartphones have ever broken the sub-5mm threshold for thickness, so we shouldn't expect Apple's phone to break this record, and recent leaks have placed the iPhone 17 Air at 5.5mm thick. It may still be able to claim the 'world's thinnest smartphone' title with this, which would certainly fit into Apple's love of hyperbole in its marketing. It just won't be able to add 'ever' to the end of the statement.
Other notable aspects seen in the images include the new camera module design, which borrows heavily from Google's excellent visor-style design first seen on the Pixel 6 series. The Action Button is placed above the volume controls, just like its thicker siblings, but the Camera Control isn't visible, but may just be covered up by the person's hands holding the phone. The iPhone 17 Air in the still images will be a mockup created from leaked information on design and dimensions, and shouldn't be taken as the absolute final design.
Apple traditionally releases new iPhone models towards the end of the year, and we expect the iPhone 17 Air to join the rest of the iPhone 17 series at that time.

Bonfire's new software lets users build their own social communities, free from platform control
Bonfire Social, a new framework for building communities on the open social web, launched on Thursday during the FediForum online conference. While Bonfire Social is a federated app, meaning it's powered by the same underlying protocol as Mastodon (ActivityPub), it's designed to be more modular and more customizable. That means communities on Bonfire have more control over how the app functions, which features and defaults are in place, and what their own roadmap and priorities will include. There's a decidedly disruptive bent to the software, which describes itself as a place where "all living beings thrive and communities flourish, free from private interest and capitalistic control." In other words, its mission is to build social software where people get to make the decisions, not big tech platform makers like Meta or Google. The organization itself runs as a nonprofit funded by donations and grants, and it doesn't take venture capital. Its code is open source, and it works in collaboration with the communities and researchers that use it to build and enhance online digital spaces. Bonfire Social, now offered as a 1.0 Release Candidate ahead of the public release, is just one representation of what Bonfire offers. Bonfire calls it a "flavor." Each flavor is a preconfigured bundle of Bonfire extensions, features, and defaults, sort of like a starting template. When a community opts to run a particular "flavor," it gets to govern the app as it sees fit, adding its own extensions and determining its own roadmap for product changes. This puts the social software back under users' control, instead of being subject to the whims of a platform maker with an ever-changing feature sets and algorithms. The organization is already developing other flavors like Bonfire Community and Open Science, and the Bonfire software lets any other community create their own version. In Bonfire Social, users will recognize familiar features, like feeds and tools to follow users, share posts, create user profiles, flag or block content, and more. However, it also offers other tools and features that traditional social networks may not have, like tools for customizing feeds, support for nested discussions, the ability to host multiple profiles per user, rich-text posts, and access control features. Custom feeds are a key differentiation between Bonfire and traditional social media apps. Though the idea of following custom feeds is something that's been popularized by newer social networks like Bluesky or social browsers like Flipboard's Surf, the tools to actually create those feeds are maintained by third parties. Bonfire instead offers its own custom feed-building tools in a simple interface that doesn't require users to understand coding. To build feeds, users can filter and sort content by type, date, engagement level, source instance, and more, including something it calls "circles." Those who lived through the Google+ era of social networks may be familiar with the concept of Circles. On Google's social network, users organized contacts into groups, called Circles, for optimized sharing. That concept lives on at Bonfire, where a circle represents a list of people. That can be a group of friends, a fan group, local users, organizers at a mutual aid group, or anything else users can come up with. These circles are private by default but can be shared with others. Another unique feature on Bonfire Social is Boundaries, which let you control who can see or engage with your content. For instance, you could share a post with a number of your circles, but only allow one specific circle's members to comment. Bonfire also supports threaded conversations (nested discussions) where replies can branch out into their own sub-threads. This can be useful for communities where deeper discussions and collaboration are more valuable than those where everyone competes for attention. Plus, Bonfire users can customize the app using one of the 16 built-in themes, or they can design their own layout and pick their own colors and fonts. Accounts on Bonfires can also host multiple profiles that have their own followers, content, and settings. This could be useful for those who simply prefer to have both public and private profiles, but also for those who need to share a given profile with others -- like a profile for a business, a publication, a collective, or a project team. Other features available at launch include PWA support for mobile devices, community blocklists, custom emoji support, full-text search (with opt out), direct messages, private group discussions (also with nested threads), and more. Extensions, which add different features, can be enabled or disabled by both admins and users. Admins simply decide what the defaults are. That means users could turn on or off features they don't like, even core features such as likes or boosts (the federated version of the retweet/repost). Because Bonfire is built on ActivityPub, it also federates with Mastodon, Peertube, Mobilizon, and others. The software is meant to be self-installed, though work to develop a hosting network is under way. For those who just want to kick the tires, a demo instance is available.

Tech giant Foxconn creating 600 jobs with $450M Houston investment
Taiwan-based tech company Foxconn has acquired the Fairbanks Logistics Park, an industrial property situated on 100 acres in northwest Houston. The seller, Dalfen Industrial, announced in a news release on Thursday that the site includes four buildings totaling 1 million square feet of industrial space. Foxconn is reportedly investing $450 million in the property to build an AI server manufacturing facility, according to the Greater Houston Partnership, the largest chamber of commerce in the Houston area. The Fairbanks Logistics Park facility will create 600 direct jobs and have an estimated economic impact of $920 million. 'Foxconn Corp. is based in Taiwan and manufactures electronics for companies such as Apple,' the Greater Houston Partnership said in its New Business Announcements: Q1 2025. 'They are expanding production lines in North Houston to build an AI server.' Foxconn has not publicly commented on the facility in Houston. Dalfen Industrial, which acquired the Fairbanks Logistics Park for $90.6 million in July 2023, did not disclose the sale price to Foxconn. Ingrasys USA, a Foxconn subsidiary, acquired the property in March for $142 million, according to the Financial Times. 'This transaction marks a significant growth move for another Fortune 50 tech manufacturer entering the Houston market — joining the ranks of Apple and Nvidia, who have also announced major investments in the region,' Dalfen Industrial said in a statement. 'Together, these developments are helping to position the city as a growing hub for advanced manufacturing and AI infrastructure. Foxconn's purchase of the Fairbanks Logistics Park arrives in conjunction with Apple Inc. and Nvidia Corp. recently announcing new production facilities in the area. Foxconn supplies high-tech components for both firms. Apple plans to build a 250,000-square-foot server manufacturing facility scheduled to open in 2026. iPhone 17 just tipped for a huge wireless charging upgrade
The next generation of Qi 2.2 wireless charging could be upon us soon, thanks to discovered regulatory filings on Taiwan's NCC certification site. This would update the Qi wireless charging standard, and we could see it on iPhone 17 models later this year. As spotted by the filings reveal two new MagSafe charger models (A3502 and A3502). Both models appear to support the new Qi 2.2. standard. Based on images in the filings, the models appear to be pretty standard white puck chargers with braided USB-C cables in 2 and 1-meter lengths. What's new with 2.2 is that the testing revealed it could support up to 50W charging output. For comparison, the Qi 2 standard tops out at 15W. Current iPhone 16 models do support upgraded MagSafe charging with a 30W charger, and can get up to 25W. The Qi 2.2. chargers double that. According to the testing documents, the new chargers were tested on devices as recent as the iPhone 16 and as old as the iPhone 11. Apple's MagSafe charging was first introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020. It does indicate that Qi 2.2. chargers will have broad compatibility, obviously charging speeds will be limited on older devices. Additionally, 2.2. comes with "improved magnetic alignment" natively, which means iPhones should snap on the charger faster and better. It's also supposed to be more efficient with no "unnecessary power loss or heat generation." While the iPhone 16 does not support Qi 2.1, it's likely that the forthcoming iPhone 17 models will support Qi 2.2. if testing is already being done well ahead of the usual September launch window.
