Shocking moment MLB star swings at fan in heated exchange during game
A heated exchange between Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana and a fan turned violent when the reliever shockingly launched himself at the stands.
With the 29-46 Pirates bottom of the National League Central, tensions appear to be taking their toll - both in the stands and the clubhouse.
And during the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers, the frustrations boiled over for Santana as he lost his head.
With the game heading into a rain delay, the 29-year-old was caught in a furious back-and-forth with a fan from the bullpen.
But the exchange escalated to a shocking level when Santana launched himself upwards and swung his fist at the side of the spectator's face.
In videos posted to social media, Santana appeared to fail to make contact and the fan quickly stepped back from the wall as the security guard accompanying the pitcher swiftly intervened.

A member of the Pirates' bullpen staff could then by seen pulling Santana away before a teammate ushered him into the clubhouse to cool down.
The fan appeared to be wearing a Tigers hat and a shirt honoring Pirates Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
The Pirates have yet to address the incident but the Tigers confirmed that the fan had been ejected from Comerica Park, per The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen.
The pirates had lost the opening game of the doubleheader 9–2. The second game was tied at 4-4 before heading into a rain delay in the ninth inning but Pittsburgh managed to clinch an 8-4 10th-inning win once play resumed.
Santana is enjoying one of his best seasons on the mound, recording a 1.74 ERA heading into Thursday with 25 strikeouts.
The journeyman is in his eighth season in the major leagues and his second with the Pirates after stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees.
MLB will likely investigate the incident. In 2023, Angels' Anthony Rendon was punished after he grabbed an Athletics fan pestering him. He received a five-game suspension, cut to four, and paid an undisclosed fine for the incident.
It isn't the only incident to have rocked the Pirates this season. In May, a Pittsburgh Pirates employee was caught in a shocking violent altercation with a fan at PNC Park.
In April, a Pirates fan fell 21ft from a stadium wall and suffered serious injuries
The staff member hurled punches and even attempted to whip the fan with a belt after their heated exchange of words came to blows. The game day employee was suspended by the MLB team following the wild scenes.
That altercation came just one week after Pirates fan Kavan Markwood slipped off a railing and fell from a 21-foot wall onto the field during the seventh inning of Pittsburgh's win over the Chicago Cubs.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition after the horrific plunge, which left him with a broken neck, back and collarbone.
Around a week after Markwood's fall, doctors revealed he had made 'really remarkable progress'.
His friend, Evan Kirkwood, was arrested for buying Markwood just two beers - because he's underage.
Kirkwood, 21, told police investigating the incident that he bought friend Kavan Markwood, 20, the beers during the game against the Chicago Cubs on April 30.
Pirates icon McCutchen could be seen with his head in his hands in the immediate aftermath of the incident, while Pittsburgh owner Bob Nutting released a heartfelt statement, saying 'we are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken'.

Israel Adesanya ‘not a real fighter', says Joaquin Buckley after detailing run-in with UFC star
Joaquin Buckley has accused Israel Adesanya of not being a 'real fighter', after the UFC stars offered their respective accounts on a run-in between them. After Buckley suffered a one-sided decision loss to Kamaru Usman on Saturday (14 June), the latter's friend Adesanya hit out at Buckley, saying on his YouTube channel: 'I hate [him], bro. I don't even use the word 'hate' lightly, but I hate [him], bro. 'Something about him just f*****g annoys me. The coolest thing about him is that kick [Buckley's 2020 knockout of Impa Kasanganay]. I respect that.' Then, describing a moment in which he met Buckley at the UFC Performance Institute, the former two-time middleweight champion said: 'Literally, I'm just trying to chill, talk. [He says:] 'Hey, man, we've gotta get this going, duh duh duh duh duh duh,' like he's rapping. 'Every single time. He's just so f*****g annoying. At one point, I literally walked away while he was talking... and I think he didn't like that, so he went against me since then. But f*** the dude. Maybe I'm a hater, bro, maybe I'm just a hater.' Welterweight Buckley then used his own YouTube channel to fire back at Adesanya, saying on Thursday (19 June): 'He knows what it is to take an L, but to say that you hate a motherf***** and you're glad that they lost, you're glad that they didn't achieve their dreams is wild to me, bro. 'Like, bro, why the f*** you mad at me? What the f*** did I do to you? I kind of find it funny that you're hating on me, you need to be hating on the motherf****** that took your belt. 'He's trying to be funny, he's trying to use his platform to talk s*** on me, but that really just shows me the potential of my name, and how big I'm becoming. Just like when I met his ass at the [Performance Institute], and I ran up on him and was like, 'Hey, bro, I think we'd be a good-ass fight, [Adesanya] was quiet at the time. 'But see, I'm man enough to come up to your face. Tell me how you feel to my face, bro [...] You're all underneath the covers like: 'Man, I hate that [guy].' You ain't no real fighter. You want to be a little pretty boy.' American Buckley, 31, appeared to be closing in on a welterweight title shot before his loss to Usman, a former champion in the division. Meanwhile, Adesanya, 35, finds himself in the unusual position of riding a three-fight losing streak. After regaining the middleweight title from old rival Alex Pereira in April 2023, the 'Last Stylebender' lost the belt to Sean Strickland that September. Then, last August, Adesanya suffered a submission loss to Strickland's successor Dricus Du Plessis. The Nigerian-born New Zealander attempted to bounce back against Nassourdine Imavov in February, but he was stopped in round two. Adesanya's first reign with the belt lasted three years and featured five successful title defences, with those same numbers applying to Usman's welterweight title run. After surviving a difficult fifth round to outpoint Buckley, Usman, who had employed his trademark wrestling impressively in the first four frames, held back tears in the cage. 'It's been a while,' he said. 'I needed to get that monkey off my back. I know I'm still able to do this at the highest level. Sometimes when you're going up against a young, hungry guy like that – very talented, very aggressive – you've got to pull out the skills and use the experience. 'Before I go, I just wanted to say that I have a lot of emotions coming into this one [...] a lot of things that I had to battle back from. I'm holding back all the emotions. Unfortunately, my daughter can't be here with me tonight. That's another long story. But man, I just want to say thank you to everybody – thank you to my family, my coaches who kept me going, Buckley for bringing the challenge.'

‘We're not friends, obviously' – Lionel Messi gives rare glimpse into his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo
LIONEL MESSI declared 'we're not friends, obviously' as he gave a rare glimpse into his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran rivals are regarded as arguably the two best players to ever grace the beautiful game. 6 6 6 6 And their battle for legendary status has now been ongoing for over 20 years. Messi, 37, currently stars for MLS side Inter Miami after a dazzling career for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina. Ronaldo, 40, continues to tear things up for Saudi outfit Al-Nassr following glory at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. And the pair boast 19 league titles between them, as well as nine Champions Leagues and seven international trophies. As far as Ballon d'Ors go, Messi leads Ronaldo by eight of the individual honours to five. But despite their rivalry on the pitch, the pair have sought to play down reports of a grudge off it too. Ronaldo previously declared he 'admired' Messi's career while admitting son Cristiano Jr adored the Argentine's skills. Meanwhile, Messi believes they have enjoyed a 'great battle' and 'deserve credit' for leading the 'golden era' of football. Now, the World Cup winner has given a deeper glimpse into his relationship with his Euro-clinching counterpart. Admitting he's 'not friends' with Ronaldo, Messi told DSports: 'I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he's had and continues to have, because he's still competing at the highest level. 6 6 'The competition with him was on the pitch. Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Obviously, as always, everything stayed on the field. 'Off the pitch, we are two normal people. We're not friends obviously because we don't spend time together, but we've always treated each other with a lot of respect.' Ronaldo also had his say on Messi earlier this year. He declared: 'I have a good relationship with Messi. It was a healthy rivalry, we got along.'
