Tuesday is the deadline for candidates to file nominating petitions to run in the primary. The council seats available in the election are held by council President Gerald Smurl, Tom Schuster and Bill King, all Democrats. Candidates who previously announced their intentions to run in the Democratic primary for council include Smurl, Schuster, Virgil Argenta, Sean McAndrew, Todd Pousley and Frankie Malacaria. Marc Pane intends to run in the Republican primary for council. The other two council members not up for reelection this year are Mark McAndrew and Jessica Rothchild, both Democrats.

Senate panel cites Secret Service lapses in Trump rally shooting
A "cascade of preventable failures" within the U.S. Secret Service nearly cost President Donald Trump his life during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last year, according to a Senate committee report released Sunday. The Republican-led Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees the Secret Service, found that a series of lapses in planning, communication and coordination allowed 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to climb undetected onto a rooftop overlooking the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and open fire on July 13, 2024. "It is a miracle that President Trump survived," Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the committee's chairman, said in the report. "What happened was inexcusable, and the consequences imposed so far do not reflect the severity of the situation." The findings were released on the one-year mark of the shooting, which jolted the 2024 presidential campaign. Trump, who was grazed in the ear, moments later raised his fist and chanted, "Fight, fight" - an image his campaign capitalized on. According to the Secret Service, six agents were suspended for up to 42 days without pay. The committee probe, which included 17 interviews and more than 75,000 pages of documents, showed that repeated requests for additional security were either denied or left unfulfilled in the months before. Numerous questions remain about the shooting, including Crooks' motivation. Democrats on the committee did not immediately comment on the report. Agents assigned to Trump's protective detail told investigators they often refrained from submitting further requests because they were convinced headquarters would deny them, according to the report. Just 25 minutes before Crooks fired toward Trump, local law enforcement reported a suspicious man carrying a rangefinder outside the rally perimeter. But the Senate report says a Secret Service supervisory agent failed to broadcast the warning over the agency's radio network, and the message failed to reach agents on Trump's protective detail. The report found significant gaps in how agents were briefed. One counter-sniper assigned to the Butler rally testified he had not been told about any intelligence suggesting a potential long-range threat. That agent chose not to report a suspicious person because he assumed someone else would act. "I'm not the only one that's observing that area," the sniper told investigators. "Someone else could've also put out the radio call." Trump's megabill triumph has Democrats eyeing the ‘high ground' on energy prices
Republicans scoffed at the notion that Democrats will succeed in promoting themselves as energy price populists. 'It's tough for the Democrats because they've made climate their energy priority for decades,' said Alex Conant, a Republican strategist and former aide to then-Sen. Marco Rubio who is a partner at Firehouse Strategies. 'Voters associate liberals with prioritizing climate change over energy affordability.' Also inconvenient for the Democrats is the fact that oil prices are hovering near four-year lows, GOP strategist Ford O'Connell said. So even if Democrats cling to a message that Republican policies raise energy prices, he said, those price hikes are unlikely to show up in the real world before the midterms. 'That's just something that Democrats keep saying over and over, but it's just not going to be true because the argument defies gravity,' O'Connell said. Blaming Republicans for future energy price increases is 'too abstract,' said David Victor, an expert on climate change and energy markets who works as a professor of innovation and public policy at the University of California San Diego. He added that for people who simply believe that green energy is expensive, the Democratic counterargument will be drowned out. 'People don't believe it,' he said. 'All kinds of claims are being made.' Try, try again The Democrats' plans to seize on the energy argument is part of a larger effort to hammer Republicans over projections that the megabill will steer huge tax breaks to the wealthy while kicking millions of poorer Americans off Medicaid. It also recognizes the new realities of the U.S. energy markets, including the rise of AI data centers and the fact that U.S. power consumption is moving up after almost 20 years of nearly flat demand. Democrats believe the time is ripe to revive the call to speed the growth of wind and solar power — and bash the Republicans for taking the green power incentives off the table. They also contend that Trump's law will spike power prices by making renewable electricity more expensive. 'We're going to need to build assets for a growing grid. Choosing not to build things is fucking stupid,' Rep. Sean Casten (D-Illinois) said. Castor agreed with the messaging approach, adding that her Tampa-area constituents are already well aware of how climate change is affecting their lives. But when she talks to them about what's at stake in the Capitol and the White House, she said she focuses on 'higher costs, higher electric bills.'
