Merrill Kelly to face Pirates in potential swan song with Diamondbacks

Reuters26-07-2025
July 26 - Arizona veteran right-hander Merrill Kelly will take the mound for what could be the final time with the Diamondbacks when he opposes Pirates left-hander Andrew Heaney on Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
As the uncertainty that comes with the final days before the July 31 trade deadline intensifies, Kelly is among the players who could draw the most interest from contending clubs should Arizona become a seller instead of a buyer in the coming days.
The Diamondbacks, who snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday with a 1-0 victory in 11 innings over the Pirates, aren't out of the postseason picture. But Arizona already has made one trade, which hints at the team looking more toward its long-term future when it dealt first baseman Josh Naylor on Thursday to the Seattle Mariners for two pitching prospects.
Kelly (9-5, 3.32 ERA) is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, as are several key Diamondbacks, including starting pitcher Zac Gallen and third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who drove in the winning run on Friday.
"I feel like it's a little too early for a reaction," Kelly said after the Naylor trade. "You know, it's just part of the business, part of where we're at. Obviously, there's been a million speculations about what we're doing. I think that [Thursday] is probably a signal, as far as you know what route we're taking, but you never know. We'll see what the front office has in store for us over the next couple days."
Kelly, who has pitched all seven of his major league seasons for Arizona, is enjoying one of his better and more durable seasons, making 21 starts.
He has picked up wins in his past two starts. On Sunday in a 5-3 defeat of the St. Louis Cardinals, Kelly gave up two runs on three hits while striking out five. He issued four walks, however, just as he did July 13 when he beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1.
Kelly is 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA in four career starts against the Pirates but did not face them when the teams met this season in late May in Arizona. The Pirates won two of three.
On Friday, the Pirates saw their three-game winning streak snapped as they were held to one hit -- a second-inning triple from veteran Tommy Pham -- over 11 innings.
Unlike the Diamondbacks, the Pirates are certain to be sellers if they make any trades in the next week.
Starting pitching is one of their biggest commodities.
Heaney, who is in his 12th season in the majors, could be a potential trade piece because he is on an expiring contract. But Heaney (4-9, 5.03) has struggled of late and is coming off one of his worst outings of the season where he matched a season high with seven runs allowed on nine hits and two walks in a 7-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Heaney faced the Diamondbacks earlier this season and did not fare well. He allowed five runs on eight hits, including two home runs, walked three and struck out two over five innings in a 5-0 loss on May 26. For his career, Heaney is 1-1 with an 8.25 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against Arizona.
"When you fall behind, you don't have much to get guys out with," he said after the loss. "I guess, narrow margin of error. I've got to go make better pitches."

Diamondbacks aim to continue ascent in opener vs. Rockies

August 14 - The Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to stay in the National League wild-card race while the Colorado Rockies are trying to avoid a season of infamy. The NL West rivals will meet on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series in Denver. Arizona will send left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (4-7, 5.68 ERA) to the mound against Rockies rookie right-hander Bradley Blalock (1-3, 7.89) on Thursday. The Diamondbacks, who reached the 2023 World Series -- losing to the Texas Rangers -- missed the playoffs in 2024 and have a tough road to get back to the postseason this year. They reside 5 1/2 games behind the New York Mets for the NL's final wild-card spot. Arizona was a seller at the trade deadline but has won eight of its last 11 games. Three wins came in a sweep of Colorado last weekend, including a comeback victory in the opener. Rodriguez and Blalock were the starters Saturday in the second game of that series. Rodriguez allowed five runs on six hits in his 5 1/3 innings but was saved from a loss when Arizona rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win 6-5. It was the fifth time he faced the Rockies in his career, and he is 2-0 with a 5.86 ERA in those outings. Blalock, who gave up five runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in the Saturday game, has a 6.97 ERA without a decision in two career starts against Arizona. After winning two of three games against the Texas Rangers, the D-backs will look to make up ground in the wild-card standings. Another sweep of Colorado would put them back in the thick of the race. "We haven't played consistent baseball all year long," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "Whatever the reason is, we win three in a row, we lose two in a row. We've got to string together a really nice streak of games where we play like we did (last) weekend. It's too early to say we're climbing and we're changing gears." Getting swept at Arizona was part of an eight-game losing streak by the Rockies. Colorado halted that skid with a 3-0 win at St. Louis on Tuesday and followed with a 6-5 victory on Wednesday to capture the season series against the Cardinals for the first time since 2009. Colorado needs 10 wins in its final 42 games to avoid tying the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the most losses in a season in the modern era. The Rockies are in the midst of a youth movement, with the latest addition being infielder Kyle Karros, who will play his first game at Coors Field in this series. Karros became the 12th Colorado player to make his major league debut when he played last Friday in Arizona, and he has played in all six games since his debut. Karros scored three of his team's six runs in Wednesday's victory and is batting .333. "The first weekend was sick, just being up here with these guys, but then to throw some wins in the mix has been super satisfying," Karros told the Rockies' broadcast after Wednesday's win. "I'm loving it. It's so fun. The home debut is going to be super cool, and hopefully we can keep the winning streak going." --Field Level Media

Venus Williams, 45, will be oldest US Open singles entrant in 44 years

Venus Williams will make her return to Grand Slam singles at the US Open after a two-year absence, having received a wildcard invitation on Wednesday to compete at Flushing Meadows at age 45. Williams will be the oldest singles entrant at the tournament since Renee Richards played there at 47 in 1981, according to the International Tennis Federation. The seven-time major singles champion – including US Open titles in 2000 and 2001 – already had been given a wildcard for next week's mixed doubles competition in New York. Singles matches begin 24 August. Williams last played in a Grand Slam event at the 2023 US Open, losing in the first round. She has not won a singles match there since 2019. Her return to the tour came last month at the DC Open, her first match anywhere in 16 months. Asked then if it would be a one-off appearance, Williams replied: 'I'm just here for now, and who knows? Maybe there's more … I definitely feel I'll play well. I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. This is my brand.' The comeback follows surgery last year to remove uterine fibroids, which sidelined her for most of the season. In Washington, she became the oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 2004. She also drew headlines for announcing her engagement to an Italian actor and joking that she needed to get back on court for the health insurance. Williams, who has also won 14 women's doubles titles with her sister Serena and two in mixed doubles, entered the Cincinnati Open via a wild card last week but lost in the first round of singles. In New York, she will play mixed doubles with American Reilly Opelka. Other women's singles wild cards went to Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn; France's Caroline Garcia, who will retire after the tournament; and Australia's Talia Gibson. Men's wild cards went to the Americans Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch; France's Valentin Royer; and Australia's Tristan Schoolkate.

Mets can't afford another blown lead against Braves

August 14 - It's almost certainly too late for the Atlanta Braves to save their playoff hopes. For the New York Mets, the clock on their postseason aspirations is ticking louder than they could have imagined a few months ago. The visiting Braves will look to earn a series win over the reeling Mets on Thursday night in the finale of a three-game set. Bryce Elder (4-9, 6.12 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Braves against fellow right-hander Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.30). The Braves mounted their biggest comeback of the season Wednesday night, when Michael Harris II hit the go-ahead grand slam to close out a nine-run fourth inning and help Atlanta power to an 11-6 victory. The Mets raced out to a 6-0 lead and chased Carlos Carrasco after two innings before the Braves sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth, when they worked five walks and collected four hits against David Peterson and Reed Garrett. Nick Allen walked with the bases loaded, Jurickson Profar hit a three-RBI double and Marcell Ozuna added a run-scoring single before Harris hit his second career grand slam. The comeback -- the biggest for the Braves since April 6, 2024, when they beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-8 after trailing 6-0 in the first inning -- isn't likely to change the long-term outlook for Atlanta. The Braves are 12 games behind the Mets, who occupy the last National League wild-card spot. Still, the Braves, who haven't missed the playoffs or finished under .500 since 2017, have taken pride in winning five of their past seven games -- a span in which they have scored 47 runs. "Just kind of nice to kind of be dead in the water for a little bit there real quick, get behind the 8-ball and then come roaring back," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "These guys, they're not looking at the standings or anything. They're out there trying to win a game, and it's really good to see." The standings are becoming worse on a nearly daily basis for the Mets, whose lead over the Cincinnati Reds in the race for the final NL playoff berth is down to one game. New York had the best record in baseball at 45-24 through June 12 but is just 19-32 since -- the fourth-worst mark in the majors. The loss on Wednesday was the 12th in 14 games for the Mets, who have found increasingly frustrating ways to lose during the skid. New York was nearly no-hit in a 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 6 and had Starling Marte thrown out at the plate as the potential tying run in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. New York has blown a lead of at least four runs in each of the past three games -- the longest streak in franchise history. The Mets won 13-5 on Tuesday even though Atlanta tied the score after falling behind 5-1. "They're rough losses," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, "but you've got to keep going." Elder took the loss in his most recent start after giving up five runs over six innings in the Braves' 5-1 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday. That result left Elder 0-3 with an 8.80 ERA in his past three starts. The 26-year-old Texas native is 2-0 with a 4.74 ERA in four career games (three starts) against the Mets. Senga also took a defeat on Friday, when he allowed three runs (one earned) over 4 1/3 innings as the Mets fell 3-2 to the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 0-1 with a 5.31 ERA in his past five starts. Senga is 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA in two lifetime starts against the Braves. --Field Level Media
