Preliminary checks of voting machines ahead of Maharashtra local body polls
According to officials involved in the process, these checks involve just testing and calibration, and not sealing of the machines.
State election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare told TOI on Saturday that Maharashtra currently has 65,000 EVMs, which he said were insufficient to cover 29 municipal corporations, 290 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis. To bridge the shortfall, he said they have sought additional machines from Madhya Pradesh state election authorities and the chief electoral office of the state.

"Madhya Pradesh provided about 25,000 control units (CUs) and 75,000 ballot units (BUs), half of which were already sent to ECIL for first-level checks," Waghmare said.
The state's chief electoral office also assured that it would provide 20,000 CUs and BUs, which will be checked at BEL's Pune facility.
To ensure no shortage, the SEC placed an additional order for 50,000 CUs and 1 lakh BUs. Once all consignments are cleared, Maharashtra will have around 1.5 lakh CUs and 2 lakh BUs ready for the polls.

Postal department service: Booking mail, parcels online resumes after suspension
Bengaluru: Home pickup of mail and parcels by the postal department is back after a temporary suspension following glitches in the online system. Last week, just a few days into the rollout of Advanced Postal Technology (APT) 2.0 announced across India on Aug 6, server issues led to a pileup of parcels and letters in the state's post offices. Music varsity gets new campus after 16 yrs
Mysuru: City-based Karnataka state Dr Gangubai Hanagal Music and Performing Arts University is getting its full-fledged campus on 5 acres near Nadanahalli on T Narasipura Road, after 16 years. The varsity has taken up the construction of 8 kuteeras in a Gurukul model, four new classrooms to conduct theory classes, a seminar hall, toilets, and several other facilities at the cost of Rs 4.8 crore funded by its internal resources. It also plans to conduct classes for its students on the new campus from this academic year and is making preparations in this regard. The university struggled to find land for construction of its new campus, it even searched for land at various locations including near Varakodu on T Narasipura Road, HD Kote Road, Hunsur, and Nanjangud Road. Finally, the then Mysuru Urban Development Authority sanctioned 5.5 acres for the new campus. Currently, the varsity operates from Lakshmipuram in the city, focusing on research, documentation, and preserving experts in music and performing arts. It aims to contribute to intellectual development and interact with society since its establishment in 2008-09. It also conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate, and diploma courses. It entered into an MoU with KSOU. It is initiated to use the new campus to nurture and develop rich cultural heritage of the state. The varsity also plans to open regional centres in Dharwad, Kalaburgi, Mangaluru, Bengaluru, and Belagavi.
