Nintendo Direct announced for Thursday but don't expect Metroid Prime 4

After weeks of rumours, Nintendo has officially confirmed a Direct presentation for this week, but it's not quite what fans were hoping for. A Nintendo Direct presentation for this week looked inevitable, between leaked game announcements and the word of various insiders, but now it's been officially confirmed. As announced on X, a Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase will take place on Thursday, July 31 at 2pm UK time and 3pm CET in Europe. It will be available to stream on YouTube. The showcase will span 'roughly' 25 minutes and feature 'information on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games from our publishing partners'. In other words, don't expect any updates on first-party Nintendo games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby Air Riders, or Splatoon Raiders. This might be disappointing for some, especially those hoping for a Metroid Prime 4 release date, but there are many unanswered questions regarding the Switch 2's third party support. More Trending We still don't have release dates for Elden Ring or Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the console, while Ubisoft has heavily hinted a port of Assassin's Creed Shadows is on the way. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. A number of Microsoft published games are also rumoured for Nintendo's system, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator. A PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 port of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 has been rumoured for some time as well. Beyond those, it's highly likely some indie titles will get shown. This might be where we get an official release date for Hades 2, following its launch in early access, or ports of UFO 50 and Blue Prince. As for what we know is coming this year from third parties, Star Wars Outlaws, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Little Nightmares 3 and Borderlands 4 are all set to launch this year on Switch 2. 007 First Light is also coming to the console, but not until 2026. Top three most-watched media services in UK revealed with 'traditional TV fading'

One British cultural critic has declared the broadcast age "over" with Gen Z leading the way on streaming Brits used to solely rely on the TV schedule for entertainment. If they wanted to tune into their favourite show or catch up with a soap, they would need to wait until the omnibus or re-run was shown, always at a set time. ‌ Now, kids can watch their programme of choice anytime and anywhere. Catch up on demand and iPlayer has revolutionised the nation's viewing habits - as has the rising prominence of other media services bar just TV. ‌ According to an annual Ofcom report, YouTube is now the second most-watched media service in the UK behind the BBC and ahead of ITV. ‌ In 2024, broadcast TV made up 56 per cent of in-home viewing, the regulator said, but YouTube is "leading the charge" in the streaming takeover of TV sets, with the service now the first place younger viewers go. Ed Leighton, Ofcom's interim group director for strategy and research, said: "Scheduled TV is increasingly alien to younger viewers, with YouTube the first port of call for many when they pick up the TV remote. ‌ "We're also seeing signs that older adults are turning to the platform as part of their daily media diet, too. "Public service broadcasters are recognising this shift – moving to meet audiences in the online spaces where they increasingly spend their time. "But we need to see even more ambition in this respect to ensure that public service media that audiences value survives long into the future.' ‌ At home, people spent 39 minutes a day on YouTube in 2024, with 16 minutes of this on the household's TV set. Younger adults aged 16 to 34 are driving the trend, watching 18 minutes of YouTube a day on TV, while one in five children aged four to 15 head straight to the app as soon as they turn the set on. ‌ Even those aged over 55 have almost doubled the time they spend watching YouTube on their TVs compared with the previous year – up from six minutes a day in January 2023 to 11 minutes in December. YouTube's soaring popularity comes as the platform's content has evolved, with half of its top-trending videos now more closely resembling traditional TV, including long-form interviews and game shows, Ofcom said. On average, people spent four per cent less time watching broadcast TV on sets than in 2023, and just as in the same year, a decline was seen across all age groups except adults aged 75 and over. ‌ Ellis Cashmore, a British sociologist and cultural critic, admitted on X, previously Twitter, that he wasn't taken aback by the findings. He said: "Traditional TV is fading. Why? A short story of taste, tech, and trust. "Once, TV was a ritual: same shows, same time, same sofa. It built a national consensus — and broadcast it. But younger generations grew up with on-demand control. They don't want schedules. They want sovereignty." ‌ Pointing to the fact YouTube is free, he went on: "Sky, Netflix, BBC - they all cost. With subscription fatigue, rising rents, and student debt, free content wins. Ads? A small price for autonomy... "This isn't just YouTube winning - it's traditional TV losing relevance. Young people don't watch less, they just refuse to watch on your terms. The broadcast age is over. User power has taken the mic." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Of the most-watched TV programmes and films of 2024, Gavin & Stacey, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Mr Bates vs The Post Office came up trumps. Gavin & Stacey: The Finale was the most-watched programme of the year, averaging 18.6 million viewers across BBC One and BBC iPlayer on TV sets.

Nintendo Direct July start time – how to watch and what to expect from the Partner Showcase

The Nintendo Direct July start time has been revealed, with the new Partner Showcase set to share new look at games coming to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 owners, get ready for a new Direct showcase, although the first-party offerings might be a bit thin on the ground. ‌ After nearly a month of sifting through alleged leaks and rumours, we're finally getting a new Nintendo Direct. However, it may not feature all the first-party titles that gamers have been eagerly awaiting. A new showcase is imminent, set to share the limelight with Nintendo 's partners, announced with just 24 hours' notice, and it could be quite the spectacle. ‌ It has emerged that despite the Nintendo Switch 2 2025 games list appearing somewhat sparse in terms of first-party titles that haven't officially been announced yet, and players still trying to decipher their Donkey Kong Bananza The Divide direction, a new Partner Showcase will be released online tomorrow. This will provide a fresh look at games coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. It's intriguing, particularly given recent rumours of a new Animal Crossing, and this announcement throws that idea into doubt. However, we can still anticipate a fantastic array of new games for the system. ‌ We're still in the dark about Elden Ring Tarnished Edition and the Switch 2 port of 007: First Light, so it's possible we might see these games make an appearance, along with a few surprises. Moreover, following the reveal of Grounded coming to the Nintendo Switch at the last Partner Showcase, we might see more Xbox Game Studios titles making their way to the platform. Could we be bold enough to anticipate Oblivion Remastered? Regardless, there are plenty of reveals on the horizon, and the wait for the Nintendo Direct July start time is almost over.
