Bill Moyers, the former White House press secretary turned acclaimed TV journalist, dead at 91
Moyers died in a New York City hospital, according to longtime friend Tom Johnson, the former CEO of CNN and an assistant to Moyers during Lyndon B. Johnson's administration.
Moyers' son William said his father died at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York after a 'long illness.'
Moyers' career ranged from youthful Baptist minister to deputy director of the Peace Corps, from Johnson's press secretary to newspaper publisher, senior news analyst for 'The CBS Evening News' and chief correspondent for 'CBS Reports.'
But it was for public television that Moyers produced some of TV's most cerebral and provocative series. In hundreds of hours of PBS programs, he proved at home with subjects ranging from government corruption to modern dance, from drug addiction to media consolidation, from religion to environmental abuse.
In 1988, Moyers produced 'The Secret Government' about the Iran-Contra scandal during the Reagan administration and simultaneously published a book under the same name. Around that time, he galvanized viewers with 'Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth,' a series of six one-hour interviews with the prominent religious scholar. The accompanying book became a best-seller.
His televised chats with poet Robert Bly almost single-handedly launched the 1990s Men's Movement, and his 1993 series 'Healing and the Mind' had a profound impact on the medical community and on medical education.
In a medium that supposedly abhors 'talking heads' — shots of subject and interviewer talking — Moyers came to specialize in just that. He once explained why: 'The question is, are the talking heads thinking minds and thinking people? Are they interesting to watch? I think the most fascinating production value is the human face.'

Agriculture Minister triggered panic buying of urea, charges BJP chief
BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao on Wednesday offered to resign from his post if Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao can prove there is a fertilizer shortage in the State. He blamed the Minister for 'prematurely declaring' a lack of stock, which triggered panic buying among farmers leading to black market activity. He likened the situation to a financial panic, calling it a 'run on fertilizer'. At a press conference at the State office, he accused the Congress government of 'mismanagement' and 'inefficiency', alleging that it created an 'artificial scarcity' despite the Centre supplying sufficient quantities. Mr. Rao also challenged Mr. Nageswara Rao to resign if he fails to prove the shortage. Cautioning the State government against launching a campaign against the Centre over the issue, he urged farmers not to be misled by 'false statements'. According to Mr. Rao, 7,250 rakes of urea were supplied to Telangana by IFFCO, KRIBHCO and RCF, with an additional 10,000 metric tonnes allocated through imports at Karaikal Port. He noted that despite global challenges, including the Israel–Iran conflict and disruptions in the Red Sea, the Centre did not hold back on fertilizer supply. He reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government remains committed to farmers' welfare. For the 2025 Rabi season (October 2024–March 2025), the Centre supplied 12.47 lakh metric tonnes of urea against the State's requirement of 9.87 lakh metric tonnes. Of this, the State government sold only 10.43 lakh metric tonnes, while 2.04 lakh metric tonnes remained as opening stock for the Kharif season. For the ongoing Kharif season (up to August 2025), the Centre has already supplied 5.18 lakh metric tonnes out of the required 8.3 lakh metric tonnes. As of now, 7.22 lakh metric tonnes of urea are available in the State. Mr. Rao said that in the Agriculture Minister's own district, 3,200 tonnes more urea were sold this August compared to last year, despite no change in crop area. He questioned whether this excess supply actually reached farmers or was diverted to the black market. He also noted that even when production at the Ramagundam factory was halted due to technical issues, the Centre ensured uninterrupted supply. Highlighting the Centre's support for farmers, Mr. Rao said the Modi government has allocated ₹1.40 lakh crore in fertilizer subsidies, making fertilizers available to farmers at just 10–20% of the actual cost. On the issue of the Vice Presidential candidate, Mr. Rao questioned why the Congress and its allies did not nominate a BC candidate, despite earlier lobbying for one. He urged Congress and INDIA bloc MPs to support NDA's MBC candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan to ensure justice for BCs. Mr. Rao also condemned divisive slogans like 'Marwari Go Back', calling them harmful and unconstitutional. 'We are all Indians, and anyone from any region has the right to live anywhere in the country,' he said, blaming 'Urban Naxal' forces and Congress leaders for encouraging such sentiments.

China Steps Up Russian Oil Purchases As Trump Tariffs Reshape Trade: 'Opportunistic Move'
Chinese refineries secured at least 15 new cargoes of Russian crude for October and November, ranging from 700,000 to 1 million barrels. Chinese refineries secured at least 15 new cargoes of Russian crude for delivery in October and November, CNN reported citing analysts who believe that shifting trade flows have opened fresh opportunities for the world's second-largest oil consumer. The shipments, each ranging from 700,000 to 1 million barrels, are set to load from Russia's Arctic and Black Sea ports, it was reported. These routes have traditionally supplied other markets rather than China due to their distance but are now being redirected amid changing global demand. Muyu Xu, senior crude oil analyst at commodities tracker Kpler, told CNN that China's state-owned and private refiners had already booked 13 cargoes for October and a further two for November. She told the outlet, 'This is an opportunistic move. Russian oil remains at least $3 a barrel cheaper than Middle Eastern alternatives. Taking advantage of this opportunity while prices are low, more refineries may consider buying within the next week or two." Trade Pressures And Pricing Since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, China has become one of the main outlets for Russian crude shunned by Western buyers. Discounted Russian oil now accounts for 13.5% of China's imports, according to energy consultancy Vortexa. Last year, China bought $62.6 billion worth of Russian petroleum and crude, UN data shows. The latest purchases follow US President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. Donald Trump told Fox News that while he was not immediately considering tariffs on China over its Russian oil imports, he may revisit the issue 'in two or three weeks". For now, analysts believe the threat of further US measures is not deterring Chinese refiners. 'Over the short term, China still sees a very good window," Muyu Xu said. Limits To Expansion Despite the surge in buying, analysts caution that China cannot fully absorb all the volumes Russia is struggling to place elsewhere. Muyu Xu noted that China currently imports about 1.2 million barrels per day of Russian seaborne crude- a figure unlikely to grow enough to offset declines in other markets. 'If those other buyers continue holding back, that's going to be a real problem for Russia. China simply can't take on all of that volume by itself," she said. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. INDIA Bloc VP Candidate Sudarshan Reddy Confident Of Victory, Says 'Those Who Believe In...'
Last Updated: In an exclusive interaction with CNN-News18, Reddy said that the Vice-Presidential election is not a battle between political parties but between individuals. INDIA Bloc Vice President candidate Sudarshan Reddy exuded confidence regarding his victory in the upcoming elections, stating that the next time he faces CNN-News18 for an interview, it will be as the Vice President of India. In an exclusive interaction with CNN-News18, Reddy said that the Vice-Presidential election is not a battle between political parties but between individuals, since Members of Parliament and not parties cast their votes. The former Supreme Court judge, who is contesting against NDA's candidate C Radhakrishnan, said, 'Next time, you (News18) will interview me as the Vice President. MPs will decide who is better suited for the post, and I am confident of receiving support from across party lines." The INDIA bloc candidate argued that the choice before MPs is one of principle, not political alignment. 'Those who believe in social justice and the values of the Constitution will support me. I do not believe that MPs from Andhra Pradesh or elsewhere will simply vote along alliance lines. Leaders are mature and will take considered decisions," he added. Notably, Sudarshan Reddy comes from Andhra Pradesh and the MPs political parties like TDP and YSRCP will hold importance in the upcoming Vice Presidential election. However, TDP, which is part of NDA, and YSRCP have announced their support for NDA's pick, CP Radhakrishnan. CP Radhakrishnan Vs Sudershan Reddy The stage is set for the Vice-Presidential election in which the ruling BJP-led NDA's CP Radhakrishnan will face the INDIA bloc's B Sudershan Reddy. The government's efforts to take the opposition on board for a unanimous Vice Presidential election have failed, with the INDIA bloc fielding Reddy, described as one of 'India's most distinguished and progressive jurists." Members of Parliament from both Houses — Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — comprise the electoral college for the Vice-Presidential elections. At present, the strength of Parliament stands at 787, including both Houses. A candidate requires at least 394 votes to be elected as the next Vice President of India. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
