Two MERS deaths reported in Saudi Arabia: WHO

Al Arabiya13-05-2025

Nine new cases of MERS, including two deaths, have been reported in Saudi Arabia, according to the World Health Organization
The cases of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) – a disease typically transmitted by camels – were reported between March 1 and April 21, 2025, according to the WHO.
Among the nine cases, a cluster of seven cases were identified in Riyadh, including six health and care workers who acquired the infection from caring for a single infected patient. Of the reported cases, five were male and four were female.
Of the cases, only one had indirect contact with camels. The rest of the patients had no known history of contact with camels or camel products.
The cluster was identified through contact tracing and subsequent testing of all contacts, with four of the six health and care workers being asymptomatic and two showing only mild, nonspecific signs including myalgia, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
'These cases show that the virus continues to pose a threat in countries where it is circulating in dromedary camels and spilling over into the human population,' a WHO statement read Tuesday. 'WHO recommends implementation of targeted infection prevention and control (IPC) measures to prevent the spread of health-care-associated infections of MERS-CoV and onward human transmission.'
Since the first report of MERS in Saudi Arabia in 2012, a total of 2,627 laboratory-confirmed cases, with 946 associated have been reported to WHO from 27 countries, across all six WHO regions. The majority of cases (2,218; 84 percent), have been reported from Saudi Arabia. Since 2019, no human MERS-CoV infections have been reported from countries outside the Middle East.
The global health body also said that it has been monitoring the epidemiological situation related to MERS-CoV and conducting risk assessments based on the latest information.
As a general precaution, WHO advises anyone visiting farms, markets, barns, or other places where dromedaries are present should practice available hygiene measures, including regular hand washing after touching animals, avoiding touching eyes, nose, or mouth with hands, and avoiding contact with sick animals.

Saudi Arabia achieves unprecedented integration, efficiency during 2025 Hajj, says minister

MINA: Saudi Arabia has achieved unprecedented levels of integration, efficiency and service excellence during this year's Hajj, according to the Minister of Hajj and Umrah. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah was speaking at the annual reception for dignitaries and senior Islamic figures who performed Hajj this year, which was held on Saturday in Mina and attended by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This year saw the launch of the Hajj Transport Center, which served as the central hub for transportation across Makkah and the holy sites and was one of this year's notable achievements, said Al-Rabiah. In terms of infrastructure, he added, the electric power capacity in the holy sites increased by 75 percent, with total investments exceeding SR3 billion ($800 million). Logistically, the minister said: 'More than 7,000 flights from 238 destinations around the world were received. In addition, 4,700 Haramain High-Speed Railway trips and 2,500 shuttle bus journeys were operated, supported by the deployment of over 20,000 buses.' He added: 'In the health sector, hospital bed capacity was expanded by over 60 percent. A new emergency hospital was inaugurated, and 71 rapid response units were deployed, tripling the emergency response capacity compared to previous years.' Al-Rabiah also emphasized the success of the 'No Hajj Without a Permit' campaign, which played a vital role in maintaining order, protecting pilgrims and ensuring the safe management of crowds. He said the campaign was launched to reinforce discipline, protect legitimate pilgrims and facilitate crowd management in a safe environment, enhancing smooth flow and improving organizational efficiency. On the volunteer front, the Ministry of Health announced the participation of more than 5,000 health volunteers during this year's Hajj season, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of medical services provided to pilgrims. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Guests of God Service Program, launched in 2019 under Saudi Vision 2030, which aim to increase the number of volunteers and enhance their contribution to serving pilgrims. The ministry said: 'The volunteers supported healthcare services across three main areas, preventive, therapeutic and support services, in various locations throughout the holy sites … as well as through active participation in hospitals and health centers.' Authorities also praised the role of advanced technology and digital platforms that streamlined pilgrims' movements and access to services, while thousands of security personnel, health workers, and volunteers were deployed to offer support.

Israel says Gaza's civil defense spokesman linked to Hamas, claim denied

Israel's army on Sunday accused the spokesman for Gaza's civil defense, a rescue group operating in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory, of being a Hamas 'terrorist' -- an allegation he denied. Citing documents found during its forces' Gaza offensive, the military said Mahmoud Bassal was 'an active terrorist' in the militant group whose October 2023 attack on Israel sparked the Gaza war. It issued copies of what it said were Hamas membership lists to the media, without clarifying where or how the undated documents were obtained. The Israeli military accused Bassal of serving Hamas's objectives by spreading false and unverified information about its operations in Gaza. 'This is a false accusation,' Bassal told AFP. 'I do not work for any military organization,' he said, adding that the agency's mission was guided by international law. The civil defense agency has operated in the Gaza Strip for decades, deploying rescuers to rush victims of Israeli air strikes to hospital. The organization is often cited by international media outlets. With access restricted and conditions on the ground chaotic, it remains nearly impossible to independently verify casualty figures or the circumstances of deaths reported by the agency. The army's accusation comes as it faces criticism from the civil defense, which alleges Israeli forces recently killed civilians near food distribution centers. The war was sparked by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. On Saturday, the health ministry in Gaza said that the overall toll for the Gaza war had reached 54,772, the majority civilians. The UN considers these figures reliable.

Israel army orders evacuation of northern Gaza neighborhoods

GAZA CITY: The Israeli military has called for Gazans to evacuate from neighborhoods in the north of the Gaza Strip, where it said rockets had been fired from. Israeli forces will 'attack each zone used to launch rockets,' the military's Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee posted on X, adding: 'For your security, evacuate immediately to the south.' The warning covered a neighborhood northwest of Gaza City and another in Jabalia. The Palestinian Health Ministry said on Saturday that Gaza's hospitals only had fuel for three more days and that Israel was denying access for international relief agencies to areas where fuel storage designated for hospitals is located. The UN has warned that most of Gaza's 2.3 million people are at risk of famine after an 11-week Israeli blockade. There was no immediate response from the Israeli military or COGAT, the Israeli defense agency that coordinates humanitarian matters with the Palestinians. Also on Saturday, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said it was unable to distribute assistance to Palestinian civilians, blaming threats by Hamas, which the group denied. 'The threats made it impossible to proceed today without putting innocent lives at risk,' the GHF said in a statement in which it also said it intended to resume aid distribution 'without delay.' A Hamas official said he did not know of such 'alleged threats.' Aid distribution was halted on Friday after the GHF said overcrowding had made it unsafe to continue operations. The UN has warned that most of Gaza's 2.3 million people are at risk of famine after an 11-week Israeli blockade, with the rate of young children suffering from acute malnutrition nearly tripling. The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of aid distribution. On Wednesday, the GHF suspended operations and asked the Israeli military to review security protocols after Palestinian hospital officials said more than 80 people had been shot dead and hundreds wounded near distribution points between June 1-3. Eyewitnesses blamed Israeli soldiers for the killings. The Israeli military said it fired warning shots on two days, while on Tuesday it said soldiers had fired at Palestinian 'suspects' who were advancing towards their positions. The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of aid distribution that the UN says is neither impartial nor neutral. The GHF says it has provided around 9 million meals so far. The Israeli military said on Saturday that 350 trucks of humanitarian aid belonging to UN and other international relief groups were transferred this week via the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza.
