A small rubber boat carrying 57 people who are trying to reach Europe from Libya is running out of fuel in the Mediterranean Sea. The passengers use a satellite phone to call an emergency hotline for migrants, but the connection drops before they can provide their location coordinates.
2:39 a.m.
The passengers call back and provide a location about midway between Libya and the closest European territory, the Italian island of Lampedusa, according to Alarm Phone, the charity that runs the hotline.
It has been nearly 23 hours since the passengers began their journey. They say they are tired and have not eaten since the previous morning, a timeline provided by Alarm Phone shows.
3:09 a.m.
The passengers call the hotline again. Their boat has stopped, and they have no more fuel, they say.
They are now adrift in the Mediterranean, a vast expanse of water where tens of thousands of migrants have disappeared over the past decade.
An Alarm Phone volunteer urges the passengers to remain calm and try starting the engine again.
It still won't start.

Why your morning commute takes longer in hot weather

Several UK train companies have warned customers to expect delays to their journeys due to the weather - but not the kind you may expect. Rather than storms that so often cause disruption to our railways, it is the hot and dry weather that is sparking issues. Train operators are trying to deal with dried-out and shrunk clay soil on which its rail tracks sit, as the UK experiences one of the hottest summers it has ever seen. This clay causes uneven tracks, making it necessary for train operators to slow down their trains for safety reasons. Passengers have been urged to check their journeys, as the speed restrictions could mean delays and even cancellations due to timetable changes. Here's some information about the changes and why they are necessary. Which train operators are affected? C2C is the latest operator which has had to amend its timetable from Monday in response to the track conditions, which it said have been affected by the driest spring in more than 50 years. From Monday, customers have been urged to check their journeys in advance. Simon Milburn, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said: 'We are really sorry for the disruption to passengers from the timetable alterations, but we need to keep everyone moving safely. 'Our teams are working together to keep running the best possible service for passengers, even with the significant challenges we face with clay soil following prolonged dry spells.' South Western Railway has also been affected, explaining it had seen some of the driest conditions for around 200 years. The clay soil embankments which support its tracks have dried out across long stretches of the route between Gillingham and Axminster. Why does this happen? Train operators have said the exceptionally dry spring and summer have sparked the issues across the network. The UK had its fifth-hottest July on record, according to provisional Met Office figures. This followed the UK's driest spring since records began in 1836. C2C, which operates between London and south Essex, said the clay soil underneath its lines had shrunk, causing the track to drop in places and become uneven. South Western Railway said because track levels have been disturbed, their trains cannot travel safely at their normal speeds. Last year Network Rail dropped 12,600 tonnes of ballast across the route to try to minimise the effects of clay shrinkage, but an exceptionally dry spring this year has meant that it hasn't been possible to eliminate track issues. It said it would need to rain for a solid three months for a soil moisture deficit not to impact services this summer. Network Rail said although this can happen across Britain, there are different soil types across the country, meaning soil moisture is a particular problem in southern England where there is a lot of clay in the ground. How will journeys be affected? C2C advised customers to check journey planners before they travel, as trains operate at slower speeds with journeys taking longer than usual. It said this may mean trains run at slightly different times, with a small number of services each day to be altered to start or terminate early. The alterations are expected to be in place for between two and three months. South Western Railway said due to the speed restrictions between Gillingham and Axminster, an amended timetable is in place for services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids. This means only one train is running every two hours rather than the usual one per hour. It said train services between London Waterloo and Yeovil Junction are also taking approximately 25 minutes longer than usual between Tisbury and Yeovil Junction. It said the timetable changes will be in place until further notice.

Tourists describe panic on board Boeing jet as engine exploded moments after take-off from Corfu with passengers 'sending last messages to loved ones'

Tourists on board a Boeing passenger jet that suffered an engine explosion just moments after take-off have told how they were sending 'last messages to loved ones' amid the chaos. Flight DE3655 to Dusseldorf from Corfu was carrying 273 passengers and eight crew when it took to the skies on Saturday, before making an emergency landing in Brindisi, Italy. But just forty minutes after take-off, when the aircraft reached a height of 1,500ft, orange sparks began flickering and sparking from the jet's right engine. Footage from inside the plane showed terrifying bursts of flames exploding from the engine while the aircraft shook as it travelled over the sea. Inside the cabin, a power outage and loud bangs made passengers fear the worst. Many of those recording from the ground reported hearing a 'deafening sound, seemingly like an explosion' coming from the aircraft during the incident. 'I sent goodbye messages thinking it was over. It was a horrible experience,' a woman traveling with her daughter told Bild. 'Suddenly, we heard a loud noise, then flames shot out of the engine. It was very scary,' another passenger said. A young woman named Leah described 'a loud clicking noise.' But despite the panic as they flew over Corfu, the pilots veered the plane to the right and turned back on itself to become parallel to the take off and landing runway at Corfu Airport - which had been placed on red alert at the time. However, the pilots decided that this would no longer be necessary as they assumed they could continue the flight with a single engine. The aircraft then moved at an altitude of eight thousand feet and landed at Brindisi airport, Italy, across from Corfu. According to German network RTL, the pilots were forced to change course to Brindisi as the engine malfunction did not allow them to carry through the flight to Dusseldorf. 'We apologise for any inconvenience, but passenger safety is our top priority at any given time', Condor airways said in a statement. The passengers and crew on board were forced to spend a night in Puglia, but their new emergency location was unable to accommodate them all in local establishments. Condor Airlines told Bild that passengers stranded at the airport had been given food vouchers and blankets following the incident. By the time they left on Monday morning, some passengers were still so stunned by the ordeal they they decided to take a 19-hour bus journey to return to Corfu instead of boarding another plane. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. It comes after a plane skidded down the runway to make an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport on August 6 forcing all flights to remain grounded for hours. The small aircraft, a Beech B200 Super King Air plane, had been headed for Belfast before it was forced to make an impromptu landing on the city runway at 1.40pm. An observer, who wished to remain anonymous, filmed the plane - forced to descend without fully extending its landing gear - as it made the emergency stop. Three people received medical attention after the emergency landing, but just one person was treated for minor injuries.

Sasha Attwood flaunts her chiselled midriff in sizzling bikini-clad snaps as she shares glimpse into her Italian getaway with boyfriend Jack Grealish and their daughter Mila, 11 months

Sasha Attwood displayed her incredible figure in a slew of sizzling snaps from her sun-soaked holiday to Italy with her boyfriend Jack Grealish and their baby daughter, Mila. The model, 28, took to Instagram on Sunday to share a glimpse into the family's lavish getaway and flaunt her toned physique in a number of bikini shots. Posing up a storm on the deck of private boat, she slipped into a stylish cream two-piece that showed off her chiselled abs and long legs. While she also shared a sweet shot of her footballer boyfriend, 29, cuddling their baby girl, 11 months, onboard the luxury vessel. Sasha and Jack - who have been together since school - also proudly posed for a family snap with Mila, all dressed up to the nines for a day out during their balmy holiday. Sasha sent temperatures soaring in a lemon yellow maxidress covered in layered ruffles, while Mila looked adorable in a sweet baby pink dress as she clung affectionately to her dad. Further shots showed the mother-of-one continuing to display her chic fashion sense in a plunging pink satin dress, complete with a matching pink Chanel handbag. After over a decade together, Sasha and Jack welcomed their first child, Mila Rose Grealish, in September 2024. Mila's arrival was announced on Instagram by her footballer father, with Sasha calling it 'the most special moment of my life'. However, despite his joy at becoming a dad, Jack described 2024 as one of the hardest years of his life as he fought for his place in Manchester City. The year saw him spend more time that he would have liked on the bench instead of on the pitch and also narrowly miss out on a spot in England's Euro team. After mounting speculation, last week Everton confirmed that they had signed Jack on a season-long loan, with a £50million option to make the move permanent next season. After falling out of favour under City boss Pep Guardiola, he will now look to resurrect his career at Everton. Daily Mail Sport revealed on Monday how the England player had made financial sacrifices to push through the loan switch. Jack, who earns around £300,000 a week plus sponsorships at City, has, according to Everton sources, gone 'above and beyond' to make the deal happen. The move across the North West also means he does not have to uproot his young family. In his first words since joining Everton, Jack said: 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - It's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. 'I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will.' Speaking about taking on the No 18 shirt at Everton, he explained: 'There is a reason for [choosing number 18]. There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here. 'So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point. 'I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he's happy as well!' After mounting speculation, last week Everton confirmed that they had signed Jack on a season-long loan, with a £50million option to make the move permanent next season After spending the majority of last season on the periphery of City's first team, making only seven league starts, Jack has been convinced by manager David Moyes that Everton can provide him with the platform to rekindle his form of old and stake a claim for Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad. Moyes said: 'We welcome Jack to Everton, and we're very pleased to have him on board. I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League, and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. 'I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season. 'We're all looking forward to working with him and providing a platform for him to show the best version of himself.' Jack has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and FA Cup during his time at City. This included being a major part of their Treble winning squad in the 2022-23 season, and he was also a part of their 2023 UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup winning squads.
