Washington, Jul 22 (AP) A US government employee has been banned from leaving China after travelling there in a personal capacity, the State Department said Tuesday, marking the latest case where Beijing has stopped US nationals from departing the country.
The State Department did not reveal the identity of the employee at the US Patent and Trademark Office, which is part of the Commerce Department, but said it is 'tracking this case very closely" and that it is engaged with Chinese officials to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
'The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens," it said.
The Chinese government restricts people from leaving the country if they are involved in investigations, including business disputes, but it has been accused of using the tool to arbitrarily keep both Chinese and foreign nationals in the country.
China's use of the exit ban and other concerns previously prompted the State Department to tell Americans to reconsider travel to China. The travel advisory was only eased in November after China released three US citizens who were detained for years.
It's one of the latest instances of such travel restrictions. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Chenyue Mao, a US-based Wells Fargo banker, was blocked from leaving China, prompting the bank to suspend all travel to the country.
Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said Mao is 'involved in a criminal case currently being handled by Chinese law-enforcement authorities" and that she is 'subject to exit restrictions in accordance with the law".
'Let me stress that it is an individual judicial case," Guo said. 'China will as always welcome people from all countries to travel and do business in China and ensure their rights and interests in accordance with the law." Asked about the case involving the US government employee, Guo said: 'I have no details to share. China upholds the rule of law and handles entry and exit affairs in accordance with the law." Other Americans have faced China's exit ban. Two American siblings were only allowed to leave China in 2021 after they were stranded there for three years after visiting their relatives. (AP) SCY SCY

Thai and Cambodian leaders head to Malaysia for peace talks

The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia were set to hold talks in Malaysia on Monday to reach a ceasefire in their deadly border dispute, with the United States saying its officials would be assisting in the peace process. Thailand's government said it was attending talks arranged by Malaysia in its role as chair of the regional ASEAN bloc, while Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the talks were co-organised by the United States with the participation of China. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said State Department officials were in Malaysia to assist peace efforts, after President Donald Trump had earlier said that he thought both leaders wanted to settle the conflict. 'We want this conflict to end as soon as possible,' Rubio said in statement released late on Sunday in the US and early Monday in Asia. 'State Department officials are on the ground in Malaysia to assist these peace efforts.' Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified since the killing in late May of a Cambodian soldier during a brief border skirmish. Border troops on both sides were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. Hostilities broke out last Thursday and have escalated into the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbours in more than a decade. The death toll has risen above 30, including more than 20 civilians, while authorities report that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had proposed ceasefire talks soon after the border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday, and China and the United States also offered to assist in negotiations. Thailand had said it supported calls for a ceasefire in principle but wanted to negotiate bilaterally, while Cambodia had called for international involvement. Anwar said he expected to chair the negotiations after being asked by representatives of the two governments to try to find a peace settlement, state media agency Bernama reported. 'So, I'm discussing the parameters, the conditions, but what is important is (an) immediate ceasefire,' he said late on Sunday

At least 2 dead, several injured in stampede at UP temple after electric current spread triggers panic

At least two people were killed and about 32 injured in a stampede at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki after a live electric wire, broken by monkeys, fell onto a tin shed early on Monday, officials were quoted as saying by news agency PTI. During the 'jalabhishek' ritual at the Avsaaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex. The electric current triggered panic, resulting in a stampede in the temple premises, Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said. The incident occurred during the holy month of Shravan on Monday when devotees had gathered at the temple for the ritual which involves offering water to the deity. Two devotees including Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said. A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition. Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries. Following the incident, district and police officials reached the spot to manages the chaos at the temple and surrounding areas. Devotees later resumed their worship at the temple. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
