KOTA KINABALU (Aug 20): The Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) has called for more direct flights between Sabah, China, and ASEAN destinations to strengthen international connectivity, boost tourism, and attract greater investment into the state.
Speaking at a corporate engagement session hosted by the Malaysia Airlines Group at the Hilton Hotel Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday, SCCC president Datuk Frankie Liew said Sabah's tourism and investment environment is expanding rapidly and requires stronger airline support.
'Sabah has already surpassed pre-pandemic recovery levels and is set to climb higher. But there is still significant room to improve air connectivity. More direct flights mean smoother flows of people, goods and business – which in turn will drive both tourism and investment,' he said.
Liew noted that while low-cost carriers play a vital role in Sabah's aviation sector, there is a growing need for premium and diversified travel options to cater to business travelers and high-end tourism markets.
'We believe Malaysia Airlines and Firefly can fill this market gap and bring in more quality travelers and investors,' he added.
The session featured Malaysia Airlines' representatives including Joshua Sanjan, Assistant Manager of Business Sales for Sabah and Labuan, who highlighted the airline's premium services such as the A350 Business Suite, offering private cabins, full-flat beds, and onboard chef dining.
He also presented updates on:
WiFi-enabled 737-MAX aircraft on the Kota Kinabalu–Kuala Lumpur route, equipped with MH Studio wireless entertainment; the MHexplorer student program, offering up to 30% fare discounts, extra baggage, and flexible date changes; and corporate travel registration programs with tailored benefits.
Liew reaffirmed SCCC's readiness to collaborate closely with Malaysia Airlines and Firefly in promoting trade, tourism and business events in Sabah. He also announced that the second Sabah-China Expo will take place this November, inviting participation from airlines, tourism stakeholders and industry players.
'Sabah's progress depends on stronger airline links, and the growth of aviation relies on local partnerships.
Together, we can open broader skies and build a brighter future,' Liew concluded.
Also present were SCCC Deputy President Brett Chua, and Vice Presidents Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, Datuk Jonathan Koh JP, and Chiew HH, Secretary General Nr Chea HT and the committee members Hong YH, Ling HT, Anthony Leong, Chan JG, Chin HZ, Joanis Yee, Leo Liew, Kapitan Foo HW and other life members.

Sabah's bioeconomy sector shows promising growth with rising local participation

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Threads WhatsApp Telegram Khairul (second left) and Firdausi (second right) officiating the symbolic launch of the Bioeconomy Tour 2025: Sabah Edition. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 20): The bioeconomy sector in Sabah is showing encouraging signs of growth, driven by stronger participation from local biotechnology firms and a commitment to producing high-quality, marketable products. Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation (Bioeconomy Corporation), Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak, said the level of commitment demonstrated by Sabah-based companies during the Bioeconomy Roadshow 2025: Sabah Edition was notably higher compared to the previous year. 'We are seeing a more focused direction this time around, with many of the participating companies investing efforts in developing premium products. Not only are these products gaining traction in the domestic market, but they are also penetrating international markets,' he said. Speaking to reporters after officiating the roadshow, Khairul noted that the programme also served to raise awareness on the support services offered by Bioeconomy Corporation and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). 'We are working closely with these companies to understand their challenges and provide the necessary assistance to accelerate their growth. This is not just about product development, it is about building a sustainable and innovation-driven ecosystem for the future,' he added. The event was organised in collaboration with Invest Sabah Berhad as a strategic partner, with the aim of strengthening Sabah's bioeconomy ecosystem and unlocking broader economic and sustainable development opportunities. Khairul said the corporation is committed to empowering local companies in line with the national target for the bioeconomy sector to contribute five per cent to Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He added that beyond increasing income for the involved companies, the roadshow also focuses on building stronger partnerships and enhancing industry capabilities. As a result of last year's Sabah edition, a total of 249 participants underwent training under the BeST 2.0 programme, including 29 Sabahan youth, with a 97 per cent job placement rate. Moreover, 12 local companies in Sabah successfully became host companies or industrial training partners. 'This year, we are targeting at least six strategic locations with more than 200 participants and the launch of 60 new products or innovations,' he shared. To reinforce these efforts, Bioeconomy Corporation has also implemented the BioSynergy programme in partnership with POIC Lahad Datu. The initiative connects industry players and stakeholders with bio-innovation solutions developed by BioNexus and Bio-based Accelerator (BBA) status companies. Khairul said these companies play a vital role in advancing technology, creating high-value products, and opening up skilled job opportunities in Malaysia. 'To date, more than 630 BioNexus and BBA companies have recorded approved investments amounting to RM8.7 billion as of the second quarter of 2025. Continued support for these companies will significantly impact the country's Science, Technology and Innovation (STI)-based economic development,' he said. Meanwhile, CEO of Invest Sabah, Dr Firdausi Suffian, highlighted Sabah's rich biodiversity as a key driver for the state's bioeconomy aspirations. 'Sabah has the potential to position itself as a regional hub for bio-based industries. This roadshow provides a strategic platform to support the growth of biotechnology and bio-based sectors while creating new economic opportunities for our people,' he said. Firdausi noted that Sabah's natural resources, including microalgae, can be processed into biofuel, cosmetics and health supplements, while seaweed can be developed into pharmaceuticals, bioplastics and animal feed nutrition. 'Palm oil waste, on the other hand, can be transformed into bioenergy and green chemicals. We encourage universities and local research institutions to play a bigger role in R&D and the commercialisation of products while also producing skilled talent,' he said. 'With Bioeconomy Corporation and industry drivers on board, Sabah has a real opportunity to lead the bioeconomy frontier in the region,' he added. Unity govt forms technical committee ahead of Sabah polls

Unity government secretariat chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said today's meeting also discussed reviewing the government's achievements and maintaining focus on economic development and the welfare of the people. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The unity government has established a technical committee to study cooperation among its member parties in preparation for the upcoming Sabah state election, says its secretariat chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. In a statement, Asyraf said the decision was made during a unity government leadership consultative council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today. Formed after the 15th general election, the unity government comprises Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and several independent MPs. However, PH has entered separate pacts with GRS and BN for the Sabah election, as the two coalitions have refused to work together despite Anwar's urging. Sabah BN previously said any form of cooperation with GRS would only be considered after the outcome of the state polls, which must be held by December. PH is an ally of GRS in the state government, while BN sits with Warisan in the opposition. In the statement, Asyraf also said a mid-term review of the unity government's achievements, currently conducted at the Cabinet level, would be presented to the council to assess matters agreed upon while respecting differing party perspectives. 'The meeting also agreed to evaluate the government's achievements and take note of all feedbacks and criticisms directed at the administration,' he said. 'Attention was given to efforts to strengthen the national economy and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the people.'
