Gujarat govt brings ordinance to extend factory working hours, allow women on night shifts
The Factories (Gujarat Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, issued on July 1 by the Labour, Skill Development and Employment department, comes into effect while the state Assembly is not in session. It seeks to provide 'relaxation to the factories to boost economic activities, attract investment in national importance to new projects and generate employment.'
The ordinance amends Section 54 of the Act to allow the state government to notify an increase in daily working hours up to 12 hours, including rest intervals, subject to a maximum of 48 hours in any week. It clarifies that increased hours is contingent on the written consent of the worker.
The revised Section 54 also allows the state to extend, through notification, the number of continuous working hours without interval from five to six.
Workers will receive overtime wages at twice the ordinary rate. Additionally, the ordinance raises the quarterly cap on overtime hours from the existing 75 to 125, again subject to the worker's written consent.
Another key amendment permits employment of women in night shifts—from 7 pm to 6 am—subject to 16 specified conditions. These include mandatory preventive measures against sexual harassment, provision of proper lighting and CCTV coverage in and around the workplace, minimum batch size of 10 women workers per shift, deployment of female security personnel, and provision of safe transportation.
The ordinance clarifies that no woman worker shall be compelled to work night shifts and that written consent will be required from those willing to opt for such duty.work night shifts

When voters were asked what Labour's biggest achievement had been since winning the election, the most common answer was "nothing", polling firm More In Common said on Friday. A new left-wing party led by Mr. Corbyn would win 10% of the vote, reducing Labour's share from 23% to 20%, the same polling company said last week. Mr. Corbyn, who was elected as an independent member of parliament last year, said the "Labour government has refused to deliver the change people expected and deserved". On Thursday evening, lawmaker Zarah Sultana said she was quitting the Labour Party and planned to launch the new party with Corbyn. "We are different people and we've got different political backgrounds and leanings, but we do have a good relationship and that comes from a number of places," he said. He also said that he "understands what anchors the president", and "what he really cares about". He added, "For both of us, we really care about family and there's a point of connection there." He also revealed that Trump reached out to him to offer him his consolation after the death of his younger brother Nick Starmer on Boxing Day. He also said that before this call, the last time they had spoken was when Trump was shot at a rally in July last year. "That was a phone call really to ask him how it was, and in particular I wanted to know how it impacted on his family," he said. He also said that the personal relation with Trump had helped him secure a deal by removing UK industries from some of the sweeping tariffs announced by Trump. He also cited how his discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron "over a glass of wine" on a train to Kyiv had made the foundation for a new agreement with the EU, which he said would lead to lower food prices in British supermarkets. "That is a good thing for millions of people across the country," he said.

Development of poor will be true tribute to ASR, says Tourism Minister
The district marked 128th birth anniversary of Alluri Sitharama Raju by garlanding his statues at different places in the city on Friday. Minister for Tourism Kandula Durgesh said that it was his good fortune to set foot at the birth place of Sitharama Raju at Pandrangi in the district. Measures would be taken to develop the areas connected with the life of the revolutionary freedom fighter to enable posterity to know his sacrifices, the Minister said, adding that Visakhapatnam would be developed as a hub for tourism, culture and cinema. The tribute to Alluri would be to achieve better living standards for the downtrodden and the poor, he said. The Minister said that he had visited Krishnadevi Peta in ASR district earlier during the day and paid tributes at the Alluri Sitharama Raju Memorial there. Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that the bridge leading to Pandrangi would be completed soon to provide better connectivity to the birth place of Sitharama Raju.
