East Valley community mourns Saguaro High senior killed in car crash: 'Kind, thoughtful, fun'
The East Valley is mourning the loss of Adam Mychajliw, a senior at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale who died in a car accident last week.
Mychajliw, 17, was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Holbrook on Friday, as heavy snow and freezing temperatures continue to impact northern Arizona.
He and his girlfriend, Olivia, were on a ski trip during spring break, according to an online fundraiser organized by the community group East Valley Firefighter Charities.
"In an instant, Adam's life was taken, and Olivia now faces the long road to recovery," the fundraiser reads.
Mychajliw also leaves behind his parents, Mark and Joni, and his sister, Ella.
"Adam was a truly exceptional young man—talented, bright, athletic, and accomplished. Described as 'the most interesting man in the world—teenage version,' he was a senior at Saguaro High School, poised to graduate in May from the Math and Science Academy," the caption continues.
"A brilliant student with a natural aptitude for math, Adam would effortlessly solve problems and then playfully explain them to his classmates. His fun-loving nature, irrepressible smile, and joyful spirit brought light to all who crossed his path."
"Vibrant, kind, thoughtful, and fun, Adam had a gift for making others feel seen and appreciated."
A total of five people have died as a result of Friday's crash, according to Arizona's Department of Public Safety.
The other victims are Jeet Vikram, 34, of Ozone Park, New York; and Fort Collins, Colorado residents Sarah Broyel-Case, 50, Sophia Case, 17, and also Samuel Case, 51, who died in the hospital on Tuesday.
Two more people were injured, and one person survived unharmed, the department said.
Authorities' initial investigation suggested that the crash was a "chain reaction" that started when a commercial truck tractor and trailer rear-ended a Cadillac Escalade. It also involved a Jeep Wrangler and another commercial truck tractor and trailer.
The incident took place early Friday afternoon, going westbound on I-40 near milepost 294.
Mychajliw was going to graduate in May from Scottsdale's Math and Science Academy, an accelerated academic program. He was also involved in track, orchestra, and competitive biking, according to the fundraising page.
A vigil remembering Mychajliw will be held at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday. It will take place on the Saguaro High School football field.

Dillon woman charged with Medicaid fraud, attorney general says
DILLON, S.C. (WBTW) — A Dillon woman was arrested Wednesday after officials say she falsified signatures on Medicaid insurance payment documents. Stephanie Lauren Lovette, 45, is charged with one count each of obtaining signature or property under false pretenses valued at $10,000 or more and presenting false claims for an insurance payment valued at $10,000 or more. Attorney General Alan Wilson said his office's Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit launched an investigation in cooperation with the Dillon County Sheriff's Office, finding that between Jan. 4, 2021 and Nov. 30, 2024, Lovette filed phony payment claims to the state Department of Health and Human Services. She's accused of submitting fraudulent mileage reimbursement claims for non-emergency medical transportation for a Medicaid beneficiary despite not providing the services. Both charges carry fines of between $500 and $5,000 and prison terms of up to 10 years. Wilson's office is prosecuting the case. * * * Adam Benson joined the News13 digital team in January 2024. Lori Daybell Trial Day 5: Prosecutors rest case, 'Doomsday Mom' not testifying
The Brief Lori Vallow Daybell's second Arizona trial continues on June 11 in Phoenix. On Tuesday, a number of people took the stand, including a police detective from Rexburg, Idaho. Daybell is accused of conspiring with her late brother in the attempted murder of Brandon Boudreaux. PHOENIX - The second and final Arizona trial of Lori Vallow Daybell, the so-called "Doomsday Mom," resumed in a Phoenix courtroom on Tuesday morning. The backstory This is the second and final Arizona trial for Daybell. In this case, she is accused of conspiring with her brother, Alex Cox, in the attempted murder of Brandon Boudreaux, who once married Daybell's niece. Boudreaux was shot at outside his Gilbert home in October 2019. While Boudreaux was not hit, the incident is linked to a series of deadly events in Idaho, including the murders of Daybell's two children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Chad Daybell's first wife, Tammy. In April 2025, Daybell was also found guilty of plotting the fatal shooting of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, in Chandler. Just like she did in her first Arizona trial, Daybell is representing herself. The trial kicked off on Thursday, June 5 with both sides presenting their opening statements. During Daybell's opening statement, multiple objections were made by the prosecuting attorney, Treena Kay. A day later, Daybell was briefly removed from the courtroom after an intense exchange with the presiding judge. What Happened Yesterday On June 10, Daybell continued her cross-examination of Gilbert Police Officer Ryan Pillar, who also testified on June 9. Pillar is the case agent who investigated the shooting at Brandon Boudreaux's home on Oct. 2, 2019. During Vallow Daybell's cross-examination, she questioned Gilbert's lack of testing to determine the type of gun used, why Boudreaux's Tesla vehicle was not kept in evidence, and the trajectory of the shooting. Prosecuting attorney Treena Kay later re-directed testimony to argument that evidence showed a clear shooting from a Jeep Wrangler that was allegedly driven by Cox, who died in December 2019. Later on, Lieutenant Ray Hermosillo from Rexburg, Idaho took the stand. Lt. Hermosillo was one of the detectives on the case against Lori and Chad Daybell, a crucial part of the investigation leading to the discovery of the remains of Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan on Chad Daybell's property in June 2020. Daybell did not choose to cross-examine Hermosillo. During Tuesday's proceedings, we also saw photos of rifles discovered in Alex Cox's garage at his Rexburg apartment. In Other News... On the morning of June 11, we obtained legal documents related to a motion that Daybell filed that seeks the recusal of Judges Jennifer Green and Justin Beresky. Per the legal documents, a judge has dismissed Daybell's motion, stating that the motion can't be filed after a hearing or trial began. What you can do You can watch live coverage of the trial on FOX 10's YouTube channel.
