Golden Boot winner to substitute - England's Mead on role 'shift'

Golden Boot winner to substitute - England's Mead on role 'shift'

Yahoo5 days ago
England forward Beth Mead's role at Euro 2025 is very different to the one she enjoyed three years ago.
Named player of the tournament and winner of the Golden Boot, Mead played a starring role in England's success at Euro 2022.
Her stunning performances were capped off with six goals and five assists - the most in the tournament.
It led to countless honours including being named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, as well as coming runner-up in the Ballon d'Or and Uefa Player of the Year Awards.
But so far in Switzerland, 30-year-old Mead has started just one of England's four games, scoring once in the 6-1 Group D win over Wales.
She has adapted to a new role as one of Sarina Wiegman's 'finishers' - a term the squad use to express the importance of the substitutes.
"You've got to be ready to go into the moment," Arsenal forward Mead told BBC Sport.
"You've got to be ready to go into a position that you might not want to play or don't normally play in and that was what was different for me [against Sweden].
"I ended up playing in midfield as a number six and then I was a number 10 - I changed position a few times in the game and I loved it.
"I love being on the pitch, I love being able to do what I can do for the team but they're the things that you have to be able to do as a player.
"You have to expect the unexpected and be willing to do what you need to do for the team and the greater good."
England's substitutes have played a key role in Switzerland, scoring three goals en route to the semi-finals.
Since Euro 2022, England substitutes have scored four result-altering goals - all in knockout games - which is more than any other nation.
It is up to Mead, among others, to continue to provide Wiegman with squad depth.
"It's not easy when you know you're not starting and you're playing well or whatever but I think that's what has set us apart as a team," she added.
"The togetherness, the willingness to try to make each other better, to try to make each other feel like we can figure it out.
"That's something that I've also seen as a shift of my role. I really know how important that is - from being a starter to being competitive in training - to make us better. So far I think we're doing a good job of that."

England captain Stokes 'good to go', says Pope

England captain Ben Stokes will be "good to go" on day four of the fourth Test against India having suffered with cramp during the third day, says vice-captain Ollie Pope. Stokes, 34, retired hurt on 66 in the evening session, but did return after the fall of three wickets to end 77 not out as his side reached a dominant position of 544-7, a first-innings lead of 186. The all-rounder had surgery on his hamstring in January after tearing it for the second time in five months in December but has bowled more overs in this series than any other in his career. "He is just cramping down his left leg and it spread to his whole leg from what I understand," Pope said. "He has pushed himself to some serious limits so far and that was a build-up of it. "He will be good to go tomorrow I am sure." Catchin' Sachin - Joe's root to 15,921 Root passes Ponting as England dominate India 'Speed, stamina and skill - Stokes is now England's best seamer' Much of the talk around Stokes' bowling at the start of the summer was about how he would have to limit himself to protect his body. Despite that, Stokes is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 16 and has bowled 129 overs across three and a half Tests. He only returned to bowling in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in late May. On day one of the third Test at Lord's Pope said he had to make sure Stokes "doesn't push himself to a ridiculous place" after an injury scare. But, with the game on the line, Stokes bowled marathon spells of 9.2 and 10 overs as England secured victory on the final day. At Old Trafford he took 5-72 in the first innings - his first five-wicket haul since 2017. "I'm there to give him a nudge but he also gets this crazy look in his eye sometimes when you go over," Pope said. "Rooty [batter Joe Root] plays a similar role but there's times when you can't take the ball off him. "He gets his vision and that's what makes him such a great cricketer." Manchester United Women's analyst Lawrence Shamieh set to join Tottenham

Manchester United Women's analyst Lawrence Shamieh is set to join Tottenham Hotspur in a reunion with new head coach Martin Ho. Shamieh has been with United since October 2022 when he joined from Tottenham, where he was the lead performance analyst for the women's team from 2021 to 2022. Upon joining United in the same role, Shamieh became coach analyst in February 2025, where he has been was part of the team's scouting and recruitment set-up as well as the tactical analysis. Shamieh's time at United overlapped with Ho, who was United's assistant coach from February 2020 to June 2023. According to sources familiar with the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, Shamieh is in the process of leaving his role at United to re-join Tottenham. Ho was appointed Tottenham head coach earlier this month. Previously the head coach of Norwegian side SK Brann, he was formerly an assistant at both Everton and United. He also spent a spell as the head coach of Liverpool's Under-21 women's team. Ho replaced Robert Vilahamn, who departed the club after two years last month on the same weekend that Ange Postecoglou was sacked by the men's side. What does this mean for Tottenham and Manchester United? If Spurs can get the deal over the line, this is a very savvy appointment and testament to the mission that the club are embarking on in their new era under Ho. Shamieh is regarded among United's coaching staff and players, with many considering him one of the most important members of Marc Skinner's coaching staff when it came to scouting and tactical analysis. For United, this is a big loss. Shamieh is the second staff departure for United this summer, with assistant Charlotte Healy taking over as head coach of Bristol City. Shamieh represents the next step in Tottenham's mission to rebuild after a disappointing Women's Super League season in which they finished the season on a 10-game winless run from January, recording an 11th-place WSL finish, just one place from the foot of the table and relegation. Vilahamn led Spurs to a top-six Women's Super League (WSL) finish and the club's first-ever FA Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United, in the 2023-24 campaign. In the proceeding summer, the team saw the departures of head of women's analysis and recruitment Zoe Mattheson (formally Matthews) and women's performance analyst Alexander Adams, who joined NWSL's Gotham FC and Leicester City men's team respectively. Shamieh's potential appointment would crucially help to recover from those departures. This article originally appeared in The Athletic. Women's Soccer 2025 The Athletic Media Company

Catalans to face Wigan in Paris during 2026 season

Catalans Dragons will meet Wigan Warriors in Paris in 2026 to mark the 20th anniversary of the French club's debut in Super League. The two teams will play at the Stade Jean-Bouin, home of rugby union outfit Stade Francais, on 6 June next year. The match will also mark the 30th anniversary of Super League, which kicked off on March 29, 1996, when Paris St Germain met Sheffield Eagles at the Charlety Stadium. Catalans Dragons president Bernard Guasch said: "It is a great honour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Super League in Paris, where it all began in 1996. "It will mark the return of professional rugby league to our capital and I have no doubt it will be an emotional occasion, both for French and English fans." Warriors chief executive Kris Radlinski added: "It's a great honour to take our wonderful sport back to Paris. "This June will mark 30 years since I had the privilege of playing in the Wigan side that narrowly defeated Paris Saint-Germain in what was a historic occasion. Now, to return with our club to this iconic city to face Catalans Dragons is another landmark moment." The match will also be Catalans' first match relocation since they faced Wigan at Barcelona's Camp Nou in 2019, a game which broke the Super League attendance record with a gate of 31,555.
