WNBA Team Makes Final Decision on Undrafted Rookie on Tuesday
As of early June, the Phoenix Mercury sit at a promising 5-2, holding the second spot in the fiercely competitive Western Conference, behind only the undefeated Minnesota Lynx (7-0).

Under second-year head coach Nate Tibbetts, the Mercury have established a defensive identity, forcing 16.3 turnovers per game (the best in the league) and allowing just 75.3 points per game (second-best overall).
While offseason additions Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally have led the offense with 21.3 and 15.2 points per game, respectively, the team's collective effort has led to Phoenix's early success, highlighted by rookie contributions from Kathryn Westbeld, Monique Akoa Makani and Lexi Held.
On Tuesday, the Mercury officially signed rookie Duquesne's Megan McConnell, sister of Indiana Pacers' T.J. McConnell, inking her to a one-year, $66,079 rookie contract, per Spotrac.
Over in Pittsburgh, McConnell closed out one of the most decorated careers in Duquesne program history, finishing with 1,795 career points (second in school history).

McConnell also became Duquesne's all-time leader in assists (660) and steals (370) while her 144 games played rank as the program record, as do her 136 career starts and four career triple-doubles.
During the 2024-25 season, McConnell averaged 18.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and a nation-leading 4.1 steals per game, earning Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and All-Conference honors from 2022 to 2025.

Despite going undrafted in the 2025 WNBA Draft, McConnell caught the attention of several teams.
Shortly after draft night, she accepted a training camp invitation from the Mercury.
Now, she's staying in Phoenix on a one-year deal.

Kansas City Chiefs OL coach Andy Heck recaps Josh Simmons' preseason debut
During Tuesday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck shared his thoughts on rookie left tackle Josh Simmons' preseason debut last Saturday. "It's a big job for anybody coming in to learn the details of the offense, assignments (and) techniques. Every play has a thousand little details and so picking those things up, that was job one in the spring where he (Josh Simmons) was doing less physical work with us." said Heck, "Since he has gotten to training camp, he's been able to every day add one or two of these details that are important to each play. So, I've seen him steadily improve, and his understanding - and we're able to have better conversations about what's going on and I think that'swhat we'll see his trajectory do is just go like this (points up)." Simmons played briefly in the starting lineup against the Arizona Cardinals but made a positive impression. Heck was happy with Simmons' performance, but refuses to compare him to anyone he's worked with through his coaching career. "I'd hesitate to compare guys; every guy is different. I'm still in a learning process myself, of what makes him (Josh Simmons) tick, how does he learn best (and) how can I help him get better? There's constant communication there," said Heck, "But I would say he's certainly as talented a player as I've ever been around. He loves the game. So, those are two good things: when you're talented and you love the game, and you want to be the best, you've got a great chance to be a good one." Simmons earned Third-Team All-Big Ten honors for the 2024 National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes. Saturday's game was his first since suffering a patellar tendon injury, ending his college career.

However, when asked if Holmes might be a candidate to be removed from the rotation as well, manager Carlos Mendoza brushed aside the question after the eventual 13-5 Mets win on Tuesday. "When you have a night like (this), you're always going to start questioning. But he's coming off an outing with five innings, 75-pitch efficiency," Mendoza said, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post. "He keeps saying he's fine, the sinker is 96 (mph), the movement. He just had a hard time throwing that pitch for strikes. So we'll continue to check on him, continue to make sure we're not missing anything. He's a big part of this team." Even if Holmes keeps his rotation spot, it's difficult to say with certainty whether he'll take the mound to start a playoff game. At his best, he's been one of the keys to the Mets' success, but his recent struggles, combined with his new career-high in innings, makes for an interesting storyline to follow as the season progresses. But hey, the Mets also broke a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday, so Holmes' bad day sure isn't the end of the world.
