In Control: How Janet Jackson Shaped Her Destiny, Her Way
Source: Bonnie Schiffman Photography / Getty
'This is a story about control. My control . Control of what I say. Control of what I do. And this time, I'm gonna do it my way.'
The opening monologue of Janet Jackson's 1986 hit 'Control' was more than just a lyric. It was a mission statement. Before this point, the public mostly regarded her as the baby sister of the Jackson 5. Even as she was already gaining notoriety with TV roles and her first two albums, Janet's career and image were carefully crafted in her family's cookie-cutter image.
Then she decided to grab her career (and her life) into her own hands.
For many female artists, Janet Jackson serves as the blueprint for how to navigate the business. As a singer, songwriter, producer, actress and all-around entertainer, she has paved the way for the generations that followed her, even as she continues to earn her stripes herself.

Jackson's independence in her career was a long time coming, especially since it was a career that, she admitted, wasn't her first choice. As she explained in an interview with BBC News, it was never really her choice to join the family business. As she made her television debut alongside her brother Randy on the Carol Burnett Show, she admitted, 'I don't ever remember being asked. I just remembered doing it.'
The same was said about her music career, as her late father, Joe, told her that she was going to sing after discovering a recording of her first song, 'Fantasy,' that she wrote out of boredom at the age of nine.
'I was so embarrassed. The studio door was open and Mike was listening to it,' she says, referring to her brother Michael.
'I think Randy was listening to it, my father was listening.
'Then my father said, 'You're gonna sing'.
'I said, 'No, no, no, I want to go to the college and study business law.''
But when Joe Jackson told his children what to do, they fell in line.
'It was kind of hard [to argue] because, look at where he led my brothers,' she says.
'So I said, 'OK, I'll give it a go.''
After her first two albums failed to sell, it was clear that things needed to shift for her. Ditching her father's preferred producers in favor of revered Minneapolis production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, her third studio album, Control, was a landmark project that changed the trajectory of her career and the music industry as a whole.
From that moment on, Jackson was her own woman.
In the years that followed, Jackson became a history-making entertainer who continued to evolve sonically as she grew into her womanhood. Pushing the boundaries in a variety of ways, she was fearless on wax and on stage. From the politically-charged Rhythm Nation 1814 to the sensuality of Janet. and The Velvet Rope , she has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, has the most consecutive top-ten entries on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist (18) and is the only artist in history to have seven singles from a single album ( Rhythm Nation 1814 ) peak within the top 5 of the Hot 100. And she did it all in the face of several challenges and pushback from the often male-dominated industry.
Even as her career was threatened following the infamous 'wardrobe malfunction' at Super Bowl XXXVIII and the subsequent backlash, she continued to move forward on her own terms, putting out 11 studio albums while also maintaining her acting career in films such as Poetic Justice, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married, Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps, and Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls . Today, Jackson has been in the game for nearly 50 years and shows no signs of slowing down. Now at the tail end of her 2nd Vegas residency, her decision to have full autonomy of her career, image, and life has paid off, inspiring the new wave of female musicians to follow in her footsteps. Her career is proof that to have longevity in the fickle music industry, it is perhaps best to take…well… control.

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner: A Complete Relationship Timeline
Getty It looks like Dua Lipa was not too busy for love after all…. Lipa and Fantastic Beasts actor Callum Turner sparked relationship rumors just one month after the pop star reportedly split from filmmaker Romain Gavras. 'Dua and Romain have gone their separate ways after a summer of love,' a source told The Sun in early December 2022 before heavily implying that Lipa was too focused on her music career for their relationship to work. Well, it looks like she found time in her schedule. In January 2023, Lipa and Turner were spotted getting pretty cozy at the 33-year-old actor's Masters of the Air premiere after-party. 'It's new, but they're mad about each other,' a source told Page Six at the time. A little over two years later, Lipa and Turner are officially engaged. Here's a complete timeline of their relationship, with the latest developments first. June 12, 2025: Lipa confirms her engagement during a recent interview with British Vogue. 'Yeah, we're engaged. It's very exciting,' Lipa says, adding that she's 'obsessed' with the ring he had made for her after consulting her best friends and her sister. 'It's so me,' Lipa said. 'It's nice to know the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well.' As far as the wedding is concerned, the couple is not in a rush to walk down the aisle. 'I want to finish my tour, Callum's shooting, so we're just enjoying this period,' Lipa said. 'I've never been someone who's really thought about a wedding or dreamed about what kind of bride I would be. All of a sudden I'm like, Oh, what would I wear?' Lipa says she 'never really understood the weight' of getting engaged until now, adding, 'This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever—it's a really special feeling.' Lipa also discussed expanding her family, revealing she's waiting for the right time. 'I'd love to have kids one day. But it's like the constant question of when would there ever be a good time—how it would fit in with my job and how it would work if I went on tour, and how much time out I'd have to take,' she says. 'I think it's just one of those things that's going to happen when it happens. I love kids, but I think there's so much more to raising a child than just loving children.' December 28, 2024: Lipa appears to egg on engagement rumors, posting a sweet photo with Turner on Instagram and once again obscuring her left ring finger. 'tooooooooo much fun ✨❤️🔥,' she captioned the roundup, which appears to feature photos taken throughout the year. December 26, 2024: A source tells The Sun that the pair are 'engaged and couldn't be happier,' though neither the singer nor the actor has confirmed the rumors. 'Dua has had one of the best years of her career professionally and this is the cherry on the cake,' the source claims. 'Callum is such a solid support for Dua and they make a wonderful couple. Their family and friends are so happy. It's been an amazing Christmas for them.' December 25, 2024: On Christmas Day, the singer sparks engagement rumors with a holiday roundup featuring Turner and a sparkling diamond on her left ring finger. After her fans flooded the initial post with engagement questions and theories, she posted another series of photos—all strategically covering up that finger. Icon behavior. November 19, 2024: Turner performs his Instagram boyfriend duties well, earning him the first spot in another Instagram roundup. July 2, 2024: They're Instagram official! Turner makes not one but two sweet appearances in one of Lipa's grid posts. June 29, 2024: Lipa and Turner hold hands at Glastonbury Festival in England. April 26, 2024: Lipa is all smiles on date night with Turner in New York City. February 18, 2024: Though Lipa and Turner walk the 2024 BAFTAs red carpet separately, the pair are later photographed holding hands as they arrive for an after-party hosted by British Vogue and Tiffany & Co. Lipa traded her red Valentino gown for a sheer black feather dress. January 30, 2024: The pair get cozy in coordinated looks while walking in Beverly Hills. The duo were photographed arm in arm in light-wash jeans and white tops. January 16, 2024: The PDA continues at celeb hot spot Sushi Park, with Turner planting a sweet kiss on Lipa's cheek. January 14, 2023: Page Six reports that Lipa and Turner had dinner in Santa Monica with a group of friends after leaving an event at Aero Theatre. January 11, 2024: TMZ shares video of Lipa and Turner slow-dancing and kissing at an after-party for Masters of the Air, which stars Turner, Austin Butler, and Barry Keoghan. Following the party, Turner deftly ignored a reporter who asked about the relationship, but a source tells Page Six that the pair are dating. 'It's new, but but they're mad about each other,' the source says. 'She was at the premiere to support him.' January 10, 2024: Lipa and Turner both attend the premiere of the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air in Los Angeles. January 8, 2024: Controversial celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi posts an anonymous tip that Lipa was 'looking very cozy' with Turner after the Golden Globes. January 7, 2024: Lipa attends the Golden Globes. December 2, 2023: A source tells The Sun that Lipa and French director Romain Gavras called it quits 'before things turned sour.' 'Dua and Romain have gone their separate ways after a summer of love,' the source says, 'She has blinkers on when it comes to her career, and the pair ended the relationship before things turned sour. Romain considered Dua to be a workaholic but she doesn't plan on slowing down for anything or anyone.' This post may be updated. Soap Lake Library celebrating renewed look, efficient layout
Jun. 12—SOAP LAKE — One Soap Lake resident walks into the library, takes one lap around the building, stopping to look at a couple of things. Before he walks out, he turns to the librarian with a smile on his face. "Looks good in here," he said before walking out. Stephanie Jackson, the temporary librarian at the Soap Lake Library, has said this has been a common occurrence since the May 23 soft opening of the renovated library. "People have been walking in, or sometimes they just stand at the door, look around at all of the new upgrades. Sometimes they give me a compliment about the new features. Sometimes they just walk right back out," Jackson said. "Some people sit down and enjoy the amenities. It all just depends, but I think people are excited." The Soap Lake Library will have its Grand Reopening Celebration on June 20 at 9 a.m., where there will be activities and opportunities to sign up for the Summer Library Program and renew or get a library card. "The mayor will be here, and I will do kind of a grand opening sort of thing," Jackson said. "We are having a story time before that. We will also be doing a drum beater craft. One of our local artists has made a large Native American drum that's made with cedar and pine and buffalo skin, and so at our grand opening, he's going to come and teach everybody how to make the drum beaters. For that, the library is providing the supplies, and he'll lead the class. The next day, when they're doing the drum ceremony as part of the Soap Lake Food and Folk Festival, hopefully those people who made drum beaters will be able to participate in that drum ceremony." The library renovations include updated bookshelves, fresh paint, new flooring, an improved service point, modern furniture, upgraded lighting, a public-use TV, a staff office area and a soon-to-be-installed reservable public meeting room. "People can expect it to feel much brighter and more open," Jackson said. "We have arranged the new bookshelves so that they're more efficient. A lot of people have come here so far and asked if our collection is smaller, and it's actually not. We just are a bit more efficient, which gives more space for seating areas. We've got a few larger tables where people can sit and put down their things and work. Another thing that adds to the brightness is that all the lights have been replaced with LED lighting. I think that helps." Amenities of the library include books, DVDs, public computers, free wireless internet, early literacy computers, lakeside view seating, scanning, copying, faxing and printing. Mayor Peter Sharp said he is very pleased with the upgrades. "I know that the Soap Lake Library is a staple for the city," Sharp said. "It's a meeting place. It engages all age groups, which is really phenomenal, and they have broken it down into new pod sections and also made it a friendly environment. They also have removable shelves that are on caster wheels to open up the space for larger groups. It's updated, modern, friendly, and the new staff that they have, there are phenomenal people." Sharp said another nice feature is that the library is open to everyone, whether they have a library card or not. "Another benefit is the library does offer a safe space for when the temperature outside is too hot. They have the ability to go in there if it's too hot outside to cool down, or when it's too cold to warm up," Sharp said. "That's a nice feature for the community." Sharp and Jackson said there are still some final upgrades to come prior to the grand opening. Sharp said public works are beginning to work on upgrading the parking lot to cover some potholes, adding a stop sign near the church and the library, replacing one more window and working on completing the conference room. "So overall, I'm excited," Sharp said. "It's right on the lake. I know out back they're talking, possibly putting some benches and stuff out there. So, people do have the ability to go outside to enjoy the grass and lakefront view while reading a book."
