Soap Lake Library celebrating renewed look, efficient layout
Jun. 12—SOAP LAKE — One Soap Lake resident walks into the library, takes one lap around the building, stopping to look at a couple of things. Before he walks out, he turns to the librarian with a smile on his face.
"Looks good in here," he said before walking out.
Stephanie Jackson, the temporary librarian at the Soap Lake Library, has said this has been a common occurrence since the May 23 soft opening of the renovated library.
"People have been walking in, or sometimes they just stand at the door, look around at all of the new upgrades. Sometimes they give me a compliment about the new features. Sometimes they just walk right back out," Jackson said. "Some people sit down and enjoy the amenities. It all just depends, but I think people are excited."
The Soap Lake Library will have its Grand Reopening Celebration on June 20 at 9 a.m., where there will be activities and opportunities to sign up for the Summer Library Program and renew or get a library card.
"The mayor will be here, and I will do kind of a grand opening sort of thing," Jackson said. "We are having a story time before that. We will also be doing a drum beater craft. One of our local artists has made a large Native American drum that's made with cedar and pine and buffalo skin, and so at our grand opening, he's going to come and teach everybody how to make the drum beaters. For that, the library is providing the supplies, and he'll lead the class. The next day, when they're doing the drum ceremony as part of the Soap Lake Food and Folk Festival, hopefully those people who made drum beaters will be able to participate in that drum ceremony."
The library renovations include updated bookshelves, fresh paint, new flooring, an improved service point, modern furniture, upgraded lighting, a public-use TV, a staff office area and a soon-to-be-installed reservable public meeting room.
"People can expect it to feel much brighter and more open," Jackson said. "We have arranged the new bookshelves so that they're more efficient. A lot of people have come here so far and asked if our collection is smaller, and it's actually not. We just are a bit more efficient, which gives more space for seating areas. We've got a few larger tables where people can sit and put down their things and work. Another thing that adds to the brightness is that all the lights have been replaced with LED lighting. I think that helps."
Amenities of the library include books, DVDs, public computers, free wireless internet, early literacy computers, lakeside view seating, scanning, copying, faxing and printing.
Mayor Peter Sharp said he is very pleased with the upgrades.
"I know that the Soap Lake Library is a staple for the city," Sharp said. "It's a meeting place. It engages all age groups, which is really phenomenal, and they have broken it down into new pod sections and also made it a friendly environment. They also have removable shelves that are on caster wheels to open up the space for larger groups. It's updated, modern, friendly, and the new staff that they have, there are phenomenal people."
Sharp said another nice feature is that the library is open to everyone, whether they have a library card or not.
"Another benefit is the library does offer a safe space for when the temperature outside is too hot. They have the ability to go in there if it's too hot outside to cool down, or when it's too cold to warm up," Sharp said. "That's a nice feature for the community."
Sharp and Jackson said there are still some final upgrades to come prior to the grand opening. Sharp said public works are beginning to work on upgrading the parking lot to cover some potholes, adding a stop sign near the church and the library, replacing one more window and working on completing the conference room.
"So overall, I'm excited," Sharp said. "It's right on the lake. I know out back they're talking, possibly putting some benches and stuff out there. So, people do have the ability to go outside to enjoy the grass and lakefront view while reading a book."

Mom-to-be roasted for naming her daughter after tragic event that shocked the world: ‘Felt like getting punched in the face'
Strange, unique, and eccentric names have come back into fashion for new parents, with monikers ranging from bizarrely-lettered variants to the Millennial-led dog names for babies trend — see short, cutesy names like Max, Sadie, and Bear, as prime examples. However, one parent-to-be took these trends to the next level and paid the price: relentless mocking on the Internet. A friend of the parent in question was sent a seemingly innocent baby shower invitation, but after closer inspection, noticed the name, Chernobyl Hope, was especially unique — or, as the Internet dubbed it after the friend posted the invitation to Reddit, 'ridiculous' and 'offensive.' Advertisement 3 Redditors were so shocked by this invitation, as seen in the post, that dozens of users accused the original poster of being a bot or AI-generating this wild story. kittysogood / Reddit It appeared as if the parents were unaware of the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. The recipient of this unconventional baby shower invitation posted it to the subreddit r/tragedeigh, where aggrieved Internet users come together to poke fun at unfortunate, offensive, and just plain crazy baby names, particularly where unconventional spelling is involved — hence the Millennial-core 'deigh' epithet. Advertisement Many replies said they were so uncomfortable with this baby name, they had no choice but to turn to humor to cope. 'I'm sure everyone at the celebration will be radiant,' one user commented facetiously, prompting the reply: 'Speak for yourself. If I were a guest at that shower and heard that name, I'd have a total meltdown.' 'I guess it's a nuclear family,' another user quipped. 'Honestly, if it didn't have the connotation of being a nuclear disaster, it would be a pretty name,' rationalized one commenter, while another quipped: 'Extra points for having the invitation feature an elephant's foot.' Advertisement Wedged between comments making jokes at this family's expense and users expressing outrage at the name was the only other detail — or semblance of an explanation — the original poster left behind: 'I have a feeling they don't know what Chernobyl meant. I asked them where they got the idea from, and said it just sounded nice,' they explained. 3 Another user shared that they have a co-worker named Chernobyl, and added that, understandably, she goes by Che. Getty Images Overwhelmingly, users reacted to the wild post with distaste. The Chernobyl explosion occurred in a nuclear power plant located in a town (now recognized as being in Ukraine) of the same name, and remains the worst nuclear accident in human history. 31 people died immediately as a result of the incident, per the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), but varying studies have produced long-term death tolls ranging into hundreds of thousands of premature deaths as a result of radiation exposure. Advertisement 'I haven't ever met another person (aside from a cousin) who has been affected by Chernobyl. I was born sick due to it because my mother was pregnant with me and in the area when it occurred,' shared a commenter. 'It has made my life… not fun. Being profoundly disabled at age 37 due to human error… And an error that never offered compensation for all of us who had their lives ruined by it,' the enraged Redditor continued. 'What a legacy. Naming someone after something that has left people with cancer, going through 30+ surgeries just to stay alive, and losing their quality of life. I'm just appalled. Repulsed.' Many commenters also offered the original poster advice for dealing with the profoundly awkward situation. 3 'Why would you do this to a kid?' wondered dozens of commenters. Wavebreak Media – 'Even if you think your relationship with them will sour, at least for the baby's sake, you need to talk to them and suggest they change the name and explain to them what this means, all politely, of course. If they say they will still continue with the name, you can smile and give a thumbs up.' 'Absolutely remove these people from your life,' recommended another blunt reply. Obscene and ignorant as this name choice may be, in many countries, it's not necessarily illegal. Advertisement In the United States, birth certificate laws and regulations vary by state, but even still, most prohibited names have been disallowed for administrative purposes — monikers in excess of 140 characters and those containing numbers are prime examples. Some states have outlawed names like Jesus Christ and Santa Claus, but as of now, baby Chernobyl Hope is more than fine the government's eyes.

'This brotha had muscles in his breath': Bo Jackson tells a story you need to hear
'This brotha had muscles in his breath': Bo Jackson tells a story you need to hear Show Caption Hide Caption Greg Olsen believes Travis Kelce 'controls how he leaves the game' Former NFL tight end Greg Olsen has high praise for Travis Kelce and shares when he believes Travis Kelce will eventually retire from the NFL. Sports Seriously Editor's note: This story is a part of a series by USA TODAY Sports called Project: June. We will publish at least one NFL-themed story every day throughout the month because fans know the league truly never sleeps. Bo Jackson, one of the most powerful running backs in the history of the NFL, a man who once ran over Brian Bosworth with such impunity, it became legend, was asked a simple question: Have you, Mr. Jackson, ever got, got? Meaning, did Jackson ever get blasted himself while playing in the NFL, instead of what normally happened, which was Jackson doing the blasting? The answer Jackson provided is one of the most entertaining NFL stories you will ever hear. It's one of those tales that takes you inside the sport, and illustrates how violent it can be. Jackson has always been a Paul Bunyan-type figure. This story only adds to his legend. And here it goes. Jackson actually told this story some months ago on the 'Get Got' podcast with former NFL players Marshawn Lynch (who is a legend in his own right) and Mike Robinson. But for whatever reason this part of the podcast didn't get much attention. Boy, it should have. The Raiders were playing the Cardinals, and a trap play was called. 'The trap play was designed because I was notorious for cutting back on you at full speed,' Jackson said. 'I didn't stutter step. I cut back on you and I'm already in fourth gear." It can't be stressed enough how accurate this is. One of the unique things about Jackson as a player was how quickly he got to full speed. Jackson was a shade over 6-feet and about 225 pounds but moved with the quickness of someone much smaller. 'We were down on our 5-yard line. So I'm thinking about 95 yards. Imma bust it from 95. And I don't know this brotha's name. But it was a linebacker. This brotha had muscles in his breath.' Yes, he said muscles in his breath. At this point, Lynch and Robinson start laughing uncontrollably. Have to admit, I was, too. 'I didn't see him. It's always the ones that you don't see that get you. And it was an off-trap play to the weak side. … I was going to go off tackle. 'Homeboy filled that hole. He hit me on the six and dropped me on the two.' Hit me on the six and dropped me on the two. "I never saw him. It was like me running out in front of an 18-wheeler." The player who hit Jackson then helped him up, which Jackson found irritating. On the next series, the Raiders QB, unbelievably, according to Jackson, called the same play. 'I looked at him and said, 'Have you lost your (expletive) mind?" Jackson said. 'We ran that play. Bo didn't cut back on it.' First, one of our super-talented editors did a little digging and found a clip of the Raiders and Cardinals. Jackson played the Cardinals just once in his career, on Dec. 10, 1989, according to Pro Football Reference. I looked and didn't see that specific play. Did Jackson get the team wrong? Did he mean the Seahawks? Another team? It's possible. The game was a long time ago. I can't remember what I ate yesterday afternoon. Second, who was the player who shook Bo Jackson like that? (If anyone knows who the player was or has video of the hit please let me know.) Jackson played in the NFL from 1987-1990. A hip injury ended his career. To me, he is the second greatest American athlete ever behind Deion Sanders. (I said what I said.) The league Jackson played in is different from the current version. Today's NFL is still tough and physical but in Jackson's day it was far more brutal. Imagine how hard you had to hit Jackson for him to tell a story like that. These are the types of stories fans need to hear more about. Players need to take people inside the game. One thing we know for sure is that none of us will ever have muscles in our breath. But we can dream. All the NFL news on and off the field. Sign up for USA TODAY's 4th and Monday newsletter.
