Sarawak Customs seizes ganja worth over RM2.5m in Miri
KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) of Sarawak seized ganja (cannabis) worth RM2.578 million when it raided the premises of a courier company in Miri on May 13.
Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said the 9.30 am raid was carried out following intelligence received from the Air Cargo Unit of the Miri Customs Branch.
'Acting on the tip-off, officers from the Miri JKDM Narcotics Unit inspected five unclaimed parcels at a courier service premises on Jalan Pos, Miri.
'They found 98 transparent plastic packages suspected to contain ganja, weighing an estimated 26.313 kilogrammes,' he said in a statement today.
Norizan said the syndicate's modus operandi was to smuggle the drugs from Peninsular Malaysia by using the courier service and declaring them as clothing items to evade detection.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman convicted Abdul Sarip Ahmad, 45, from RPR Tudan here on his own guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act. The Section provides for imprisonment of between five and seven years, and not more than three strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court ordered the prison sentence to commence from the date of arrest, and for the accused to be placed under supervision by the police and National Anti-Drugs Agency for a period of two years upon his release. Based on the facts of the case, Abdul Sarip was arrested after testing positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Miri Central Police Station at around 12.30pm on April 14, 2024. Temerloh accident: Driver of car involved in fatal accident remanded for seven days
TEMERLOH: The car driver believed to be involved in the fatal accident that killed two teenage girls at the traffic light intersection on Jalan Tengku Ismail here yesterday has been remanded for seven days. Temerloh District Police Chief ACP Mazlan Hassan said the 38-year-old man, whose address is in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, was detained starting today until June 18. 'The suspect was remanded to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,' he said in a statement today. Earlier, Mazlan was reported to have said that a search of the car found plastic packets suspected to contain syabu and heroin drugs estimated to be worth more than RM6,000. In the incident around 11 pm, motorcyclist Nur Irdina Shaffiya Muhammad Nazri and her pillion rider, Aneez Irdiena Sofya Khairul Azman, both aged 18, died at the scene, believed to have been hit by a Perodua Bezza car while they had stopped at a red traffic light.
