Sarawak Customs seizes ganja worth over RM2.5m in Miri
Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said the 9.30 am raid was carried out following intelligence received from the Air Cargo Unit of the Miri Customs Branch.
'Acting on the tip-off, officers from the Miri JKDM Narcotics Unit inspected five unclaimed parcels at a courier service premises on Jalan Pos, Miri.
'They found 98 transparent plastic packages suspected to contain ganja, weighing an estimated 26.313 kilogrammes,' he said in a statement today.
Norizan said the syndicate's modus operandi was to smuggle the drugs from Peninsular Malaysia by using the courier service and declaring them as clothing items to evade detection.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

KOTA BARU: Two siblings, the sons of a doctor in Ketereh, were brought before a Magistrate's Court here on Monday (Aug 18) to face separate charges of trafficking cannabis totalling 35.58kg on Aug 5, Sinar Harian reports. They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, providing for the death penalty or life imprisonment and, if not sentenced to death, shall be subject to a maximum of 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The prosecution is being handled by Deputy Public Prosecutors Muhammad Syamsul Ikhmal Ramli and Nur Haziqah Hassan, while both defendants are represented by lawyer Muhammad Hasif Hasan. The case is set for mention on Oct 16 and 27, pending chemical report results. Meanwhile, at the Sessions Court here, Ahmad Ammar Rusydi was also charged with another offence of possessing a Glock AEKZ847 Mariner 9x19 USA firearm along with 16 live bullets at the same location, time, and date. He pleaded not guilty and requested a trial before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. For this charge, he is being prosecuted under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a minimum of six strokes of the cane, if convicted. The prosecution is conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad, and the defendant is also represented by lawyer Muhammad Hasif. For this case, the court has set the next mention date on Sept 22, and both defendants were denied bail.

Snatch thief's act gets caught on CCTV, arrested in 12 hours
KULAI: A man was arrested approximately 12 hours after allegedly committing snatch theft at a restaurant on Jalan Ismail near here. Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the incident took place on Sunday (Aug 17) at 7.35am and the suspect was detained at 5.10pm. 'The victim, a local woman in her 50s, was having breakfast at the restaurant and had placed her handbag on a chair,'' he said in a statement. ACP Tan said the suspect, riding a motorcycle, suddenly snatched the handbag, and his act was captured on the restaurant's CCTV. 'The 26-year-old suspect, a local, was detained at a business outlet in Taman Cantik near here,'' he said. ACP Tan said the victim suffered a RM1,000 loss in the incident, along with her identification documents and cash. He said police also seized a purse containing receipts, RM303 and SG$115, a yellow chain, a mobile phone, a motorcycle, a motorcycle key and a helmet. 'The suspect had spent the money, and the bag was burned at an oil palm plantation near his house,'' added ACP Tan. He said the suspect had a criminal record, tested positive for methamphetamine and is on the police's wanted list under Section 15(1)(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. JOHOR BAHRU – A man has been arrested for arson after he set fire to a Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) tow truck at a vehicle storage depot. Johor Bahru South District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the incident happened at about 11.07am on Friday after the suspect's Perodua Axia had been towed by MBJB the day before. 'The suspect, who did not have money to pay the compound, was asked to file an appeal but felt the process was too difficult before taking action beyond the law,' he said in a statement on Sunday. Raub added that closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) footage showed the suspect pouring petrol and setting fire to the MBJB tow truck, causing a blaze with an estimated loss of about RM10,000. Police acted quickly, arresting the suspect at around 1.06pm the same day. Investigators also seized case items, including an aluminium container and a lighter.
