
New imaging reveals intricate tattoos on 2,000-year-old Siberian ‘ice mummy'
Although the prehistoric remains date from more than 2,000 years ago, the skin, and therefore the tattoos, of mummies from the region's Pazyryk culture have been preserved in permafrost in the Altai mountains, according to a statement from the journal Antiquity, which published the study, on Thursday.
The tattoos 'have long intrigued archaeologists due to their elaborate figural designs,' said study author Gino Caspari, an archaeologist at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology and the University of Bern, in the statement.
However, previous research on the tattoos has been based on early schematic drawings.
'These interpretations lacked clarity regarding the techniques and tools used and did not focus much on the individuals but rather the overarching social context,' said Caspari.
Now, however, researchers have been able to produce a 3D scan of one tattooed mummy using newly-available high-resolution near infrared photography, shedding light on the high-level of craftsmanship of Pazyryk tattoo artists.
Researchers worked with modern tattoo artists to identify the tools and techniques used by their ancient counterparts, revealing that this particular mummy had more intricate tattoos on its right forearm than on the left.
While the two tattoos share many of the same characteristics, the right arm shows 'a finer attention to detail and a greater array of visual techniques' compared to the left, according to the study.
The right arm tattoo most likely took at least two sessions to complete, and makes use of the contours of the wrist to allow the tattoo to flow over the arm, it adds.
This 'clever placement' not only 'showcases the artist's expertise,' but emphasizes a feline animal as the focal point of the tattoo, according to the study.
This expertise is further demonstrated by the clear and consistent linework, said the researchers.
'Achieving such crisp and uniform results, especially with hand-poked methods, would be a challenge even for contemporary tattooists using modern equipment,' they wrote.
This may mean that the work was carried out by two different artists, or the same artist at different stages of training, indicating that tattooing was a skilled craft for the Pazyryk, requiring formal training and technical ability, according to the statement.
'The study offers a new way to recognize personal agency in prehistoric body modification practices,' said Caspari.
'Tattooing emerges not merely as symbolic decoration but as a specialized craft – one that demanded technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity, and formal training or apprenticeship.'
This is not dissimilar to modern tattoo artists, he added.
'This made me feel like we were much closer to seeing the people behind the art, how they worked and learned and made mistakes,' said Caspari. 'The images came alive.'

Remains of an extinct breed of Bronze Age cattle have been discovered by archaeologists in a cave in the Yorkshire Dales. Researchers working with cave explorers uncovered the remnants of an auroch while surveying a number of caverns and sinkholes near Ingleborough. The team also found evidence of the area being used as a human burial site during the Neolithic period. A spokesperson said the discoveries had helped shed light on how the caves were used by those who lived and farmed in the Dales prehistory. Aurochs were once found across Europe before habitat loss and hunting wiped them out in the 17th Century. They are regraded as the wild ancestor of modern cattle. It highlighted the important role cavers play in uncovering underground history, with some of the chosen cave sites requiring specialist skills to access. Rick Peterson, a caving archaeologist at the University of Central Lancashire said: "It's often experienced local cavers who are the first to encounter archaeological finds such as these as they are the only ones who can access the caves. "This partnership now ensures that any discoveries made during recreational caving are officially documented." As well as examining the history of Ingleborough, the project also looked at ways to engage today's farmers in sustainable and adaptive land management practices. Ingleborough is one of the few places in England where "commoning" traditions remain with around a dozen farmers still grazing sheep on the land under rights dating back to the Magna Carta. Project officer Claire Braeburn said: "Ingleborough has a longstanding history as common land, so we wanted to see if the caves held evidence of just how long humans began farming on the fell. "Over half of England was common land, but now it's just 3%. This project has helped us understand more about human interaction with the common and the land's longstanding biodiversity. "It has shown how important preserving these ancient practices is or we risk losing them forever." As for that last one, some footage has reemerged, showing a coast guard vessel out in the ocean, and the moment it braced for impact from the surge. See below. Scientists Recreated the Universe's First Molecule
Seconds after the Big Bang, the newborn universe gave rise to the first elements—ionized forms of hydrogen and helium. These particles combined, forging helium hydride—the first ever molecule. It would take another several hundred million years for the first stars to be born, and scientists have long puzzled over the exact nature of the chemical processes that led to their formation. To try and tease apart the stellar origin story, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany recreated helium hydride in the lab. They found that it likely played a much larger role in star birth than they had previously thought, helping primordial gas clouds shed enough heat to collapse into stars. In the study, the researchers recreated collisions between helium hydride and deuterium in what they believe to be a first-of-its-kind experiment, according to a press release. Their findings, published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics on July 24, indicate that the rate of the reaction remains constant as the temperature drops, contradicting earlier work. 'Previous theories predicted a significant decrease in the reaction probability at low temperatures, but we were unable to verify this in either the experiment or new theoretical calculations by our colleagues,' Holger Kreckel, who is a researcher at Max Planck and the lead author on the study, said in a statement. 'The reactions of [helium hydride] with neutral hydrogen and deuterium therefore appear to have been far more important for chemistry in the early universe than previously assumed,' he added. Two helium hydride reactions produce molecular hydrogen, and likely aided star formation in the early universe. In the first—replicated in the study—deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen that contains a neutron in addition to a proton, collides with helium hydride to yield hydrogen deuteride, a form of molecular hydrogen composed of a hydrogen atom and a deuterium atom. The other reaction occurs when helium hydride collides with a neutral hydrogen atom, producing neutral molecular hydrogen. Both forms of molecular hydrogen act as coolants, helping nebulae lose heat, condense, and ultimately collapse into stars. The researchers used Max Planck's Cryogenic Storage Ring to carry out their experiment. This low-temperature reaction chamber allows scientists to study molecular and atomic reactions in space-like conditions. The team stored helium hydride ions inside the chamber for up to a minute at roughly -450 degrees Fahrenheit (-267 degrees Celsius), then superimposed them with a beam of neutral deuterium atoms. To observe how the collision rate varies with collision energy—directly related to temperature—they adjusted the relative speeds of the two particle beams. Scientists previously believed rate of reactions would slow down as temperature dropped, but the results of this experiment suggest otherwise. The researchers found that the rate remained almost constant despite decreasing temperatures. This surprising result suggests that helium hydride remains chemically active even in cold conditions, a finding that the scientists argue in their paper should prompt a reevaluation of helium chemistry in the early universe.
